"Your Dog is in the Bar" book event, Holiday Hours.

---December 1st through December 24th, Florey's Books will be open 10am to 8pm every day. So get your holiday orders in, and your last minute shopping as well.---

Florey's invites you meet Pacifica author Celia Day as she discusses her book "Your Dog Is In The Bar"

***Saturday, December 5th, 2-4 pm***

About the book: Affectionate, warm, and funny, Your Dog Is in the Bar by new author Celia Rensch Day is for folks who want to remember the good old days when neighbors helped mend fences and everyone pitched in when the old store needed a fresh coat of paint and a new roof. This novel-memoir takes a dry-humored, straightforward, journalistic, yet slapstick approach to what life is like, not on the fringe of the big city, but in the thick of it all in a small town. It’s a fresh look at down home, hometown life and the characters that keep it kicking. In Ramona, South Dakota there is seventy-nine-year-old Maude the Mowing Queen and Ira, who is known as Mr. Cat Man, and Russell, the local gravedigger, water meter reader, town maintenance guy, and all around Mr. Fix It. The author has known Ramona her whole life and when she returns with her husband to live there after a thirty-five year hiatus, she learns that the folks she finds there are exactly what she’s been missing.

About the Author: Celia Rensch Day is the youngest of nine children. Over the years, she has been an Avon lady, a nurse’s aide, a cook in a state hospital, and a store clerk, not to mention a stint debarking trees to make telephone poles and fence posts. She later became the first woman for Bison State Telephone Co. in South Dakota to do telephone installation and repair. For the past twenty-three years, Celia has also done volunteer sewing for numerous charities. An avid traveler, proud mother and grandmother, she and her husband lived in California for thirty years before returning to her hometown. Your Dog Is in the Bar is her first book.

"Love Each Day" author event Saturday, August 22nd!

Florey's Books invites you to meet El Granada-based author Gail Bernice Howard as she discusses her new book "Love Each Day".

***Saturday, August 22nd, 2-4pm***

About the book: Are We Happy Yet?

We are used to psychologists, psychiatrists, and other "experts" offering advice about how to be happy and how to live a fulfilling life. Even though the books by these experts can be helpful, sometimes the best way to learn about life is from true stories. Although Love Each Day doesn't specifically tell people how to live a wonderful life, the authentic true stories nevertheless offer timeless lessons about enjoying life. The tapestry of true stories in our lives will always be invaluable. From these stories we not only learn how people from different walks of life live, but also what is important to these individuals. Ultimately, this book inspires readers to spend time treasuring what really matters.

About the author: Gail Bernice Holland

Gail is an author and award-winning journalist who has worked on newspapers and magazines in Britain and the United States.

As a staff writer and interior designer for Home magazine in London, England, Holland furnished a four-bedroom house for the Ideal Home Exhibition visited by Princess Alexandra, a member of the British Royal Family. After immigrating to the United States, Holland was a feature writer for the San Francisco Examiner newspaper, editor of Connections magazine published by the Institute of Noetic Sciences, and a staff copywriter for the stores Joseph Magnin and Gump's, California. She has also worked in the movie industry and written radio commentaries.

Meet the author of "The Garden of the Poets" Thursday, August 13th

Florey's Books and the "Chit Chat Readers' Group" invite you to an evening with local author, Rauf Naquishbendi, for a discussion of his book, "The Garden of the Poets".

***Thursday, August 13th, 7-8:30 pm***

The first part of the book celebrates the Kurdish culture, as lived by Rauf and his extended family in his Iraqi hometown of Halabja, which was once called the garden of the poets. At an all-too-young age, Rauf witnesses horrors of man's inhumanity against man as Halabja is caught in the middle of this war-torn area near the Iranian border during the Kurdish Revolution (starting in 1961) and continuing through the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). The book culminates in gripping first-hand accounts of the bombing of his village by Saddam Hussein's regime in 1988 using chemical weapons and nerve gas which killed more than 5,000 civilians within minutes.

There is also Rauf's brave, and often humorous, adventure emigrating to New York City, and his heartbreak reading about the attack on Halabja after he had moved to the Bay Area. He did not know the fate of his parents and other family members until two years after the bombing.

This is an important work; a story that needed to be told. At the time of the bombing attacks, the American government looked the other way, and even misdirected blame to Iran.

"A Selfish Life?" book event, Saturday June 27th!

Come and meet Healdsburg-based author Marisol Schowengerdt as she discusses her new book "A Selfish Life?" at Florey's Books.

***Saturday, June 27th. 2-4 pm***

About the book: When Kevin and Modra settle in Healdsburg and discover
a peaceful, selfish life, their lifelong dreams and aspirations
wane and leave them in conflict with society and those
they love most.
Modra, frustrated with the common assumption that something
is wrong with her decides she is tired of explaining to strangers that
she has been trying to become pregnant but has been diagnosed with
unexplained infertility. Saddened by the diagnosis, yet privately relieved,
she and her husband are forced to reckon with their conscience before
ultimately striking the deal that will determine if they are to accept
nature and remain childless or choose science (invitro) to force the hand
of nature and give them a child.
As they struggle to honor each other’s beliefs, their friends
and family around them must fight their own moral battles.
Secrets surface and lives are reshaped by the blunting
circumstances they are forced to confront...
It’s not about judgment... It’s about circumstance.

About the author: Marisol lives in the California Wine Country
with her husband and their little Kenya who
was adopted from the Healdsburg Animal
Shelter.
She enjoys traveling extensively and spending
her spare time surrounded by her supportive
and fun loving friends and family.
“The Idea for the book came about as my husband and I
faced a similar diagnosis as the characters Kevin and Modra.
We debated and discussed our situation and options with
our friends and family who happened to be very supportive.
To our surprise, the most interesting opinions came from
strangers we met through the years while traveling abroad...
we would never see each other again and so, we shared our
stories.

*** Saturday, May 16th. 2-4pm ***

About the book: Imagine if you stepped out of your comfortable world on a farm in Southern Ohio and stepped onto a small Island in the middle of the South Pacific, a different culture, a different language, a different world. I had walked out of the future into the past

About the author: Dorothy Williams was born to Harold Williams of Ohio and Evelyn Rogers of Indiana in August of 1935. Dorothy is one of seven children. She met her husband, Claudius Ram (Richard) in 1953 while in her senior year at Huntington High School and married three months later.

'The Garden of the Poets' author event, Saturday, April 25th!

Join local author Rauf Naqishbendi as he discusses his new book 'The Garden of the Poets'.

***Saturday, April 25th. 2-4pm***

About the book: In 1988, Saddam Hussein bombed the town of Halabja with chemical weapons and nerve gas which killed more than 5,000 people within minutes. The bombing was part of his Anfal campaign, genocide against the Kurds.

However, this is not entirely a book about death and destruction. It is a book which celebrates Kurdish culture through stories from the author’s childhood. It gives insight into Saddam’s reign of terror, but also tells the stories of the Kurdish people in Iraq with joy and humor.

This book also includes episodes related to his experiences adapting to a new homeland, America. Such experiences are emblematic of a displaced people. While this book outlines the brutalities and hardships endured by the Kurdish people, it also embodies the simple nobility and joyful humor essential to our communal soul. This record of the Kurdish people captures the imagination, stirs compassion, and helps unravel a complex tapestry of ill-fated political decisions.

"Tales From My Grandmother" author event. Saturday, April 4th!

Author event Saturday, April 4th. 2pm-5pm

Please join us at Florey's Books as we welcome local author Surrey Blackburn. She will be here to talk about her new children's book "Tales From My Grandmother".

About the book: (visit the website!) http://www.talesfrommygrandmother.com/

Charming stories of life on the home front— Through the eyes of a little girl.

By turns poignant, funny, and moving, these delightfully illustrated tales convey both the everydayness and the harsh realities of life at home in England during World War II.

As you read these charming stories, you will experience what it felt like to be a little Bristol girl trying to make sense of a world of air raid shelters, gas masks, rationing, and endless “queues.” Based on memories Surrey Blackburn shared with own grandchildren, “Tales from my Grandmother” gives the children of today a real sense of what life was like for children back then:

Living through air raids
Dealing with gas masks
Songs and games that helped everyone cope
Sharing Ration book coupons
Maintaining family ties

About the author:

Surrey Blackburn, mother of two and grandmother of five, was born in Bristol, England, and now lives in Northern California with her husband, a dog, four cats, and a lovely view of the Pacific Ocean. After years as a teacher, bank manager, foundation director, and now photographer, she returns with these stories to an earlier interest in working with young children.

'The Whiteboard Jungle' event, Saturday, Feb. 21st!

Author event Saturday, February 21st, 1-3pm.

Florey's Books welcomes local author Denise Chase-Kirejcyk. She will be on hand to discuss her new book, "The Whiteboard Jungle".

From the website http://www.whiteboardjungle.org :
"After teaching school for over twelve years, Denise Chase has written a hilarious, insightful and astonishingly candid journal chronicling one of her years as a middle school teacher.

Though comedic, the Whiteboard Jungle has a serious side as well. It gives vivid and often appalling vignettes of students hopelessly preoccupied with themselves and pop culture, officials presiding over a dysfunctional and foundering system, teachers grappling with frustrations and sometimes leaving the profession, and parents deluded into thinking their kids are blameless angels whose poor grades must be the fault of teachers.

But the many rewarding parts of teaching are nicely presented too. We meet earnest students who despite grim home lives are determined to succeed, and unruly students who with some prodding decide to turn their lives around. In the end, we experience the pride in seeing 8th graders "cross the stage" and go on to new life challenges.

The Whiteboard Jungle should be read by teachers, prospective teachers, and perhaps most importantly by parents of students. All will enjoy the humor and come away more knowledgeable of today's educational system."
