Poetry Reading at Florey's Celebrating Poet William Stafford's Birthday, Saturday, Jan. 12, 7:30pm

Florey's invites you to a poetry reading in celebration of the poet William Stafford.

***Saturday, Jan. 12th, 7:30-9:30pm***

Stafford, who died in the early 90s, was a native of Kansas, a conscientious objector in WWII (who served 5 years in an American prison camp, where he developed his life-long habit of arising long before dawn to write a poem every day), a teacher of literature and poetry at William and Mary College in Oregon, married and father of four, who, if his daily poem didn't work out as planned, famously said, "I lower my expectations." His students adored him, especially when he advised them not to be afraid to write bad poems!

The William Stafford Society in Oregon initiated the celebration of Stafford's birthday, and there are now multiple such celebrations in the country. The evening will run a bit differently than our usual poetic events. The feature will be a video of an absolutely marvelous and rollicking conversation between Stafford and his great friend Robert Bly. The two were as different as poets and people can be, but the sparks that fly between them are incredibly inspiring! Then, at open mic, we ask anyone who wants to read to share a poem by Stafford, or inspired by knowing him, or his vision of life. If you haven't read his work, we urge you to find some and, as Stafford said in one of his poems, "You, reading this, be ready"; be ready for a compelling, fierce, reflective, tender and spacious view of our human life on earth and beyond.

We hope to see you!

"Enamored with Place" Book Event with Author Wendy Bertrand, Dec. 15th, 2-4pm!

Florey's Books welcomes author and architect Wendy Bertrand as she discusses her book "Enamored with Place: As Woman + As Architect"

***Saturday, Dec. 15th, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

Lyrical, insightful, and pleasantly avant-garde, this is the story of an intensely creative and ambitious young woman who discovered her love for place, for design, for building - that is, for architecture - even before she knew the word. It is an easy-to-read account chronicling the life and times of one of the few female to enter the field of architecture in th early '60s. As a single mother, Wendy Bertrand accepted the job security over the potential glamour, prestige, or celebrity of private practice, where architectural stars shine. She tells us how she pursued a career while continuing to value her perspective and insight as a woman, a mother, and someone who cares passionately about social equity. Her love of place infuses every aspect of her personal and professional life.

She tells us of her adventures in travel, education, marriage, childbirth, motherhood, and work. This everyday architect worked in the traditionally male-valued US Navy from 1973 to 1991, and within her civilian job she found ways to add humanistic features to that institutional military engineering culture. She took pride in public service while creating opportunities to improve workplace norms. In effect, the management and design decisions she embraced continue to challenge cultural convention in the workplace today. She reflects on how what she knows now could influence thw way our culture goes about the making of place.

This is also a story about a woman coming into her own as she matures, enjoys the fiber arts, and embraces the elements of her life that have enduring value.

Florey's Books welcomes Pacifica author Michael Romano as he discusses his new book "Days of Drugs and Sirens"

***Saturday, Dec. 8th, 2-4pm***

The hilarious, unbelievable true story of one man's quest to pay his bills and find a decent meal, and how he saved a few lives along the way.

Michael Romano had seen it all: gangs, crime and war! But nothing prepared him for his next gig, as one of America’s first paramedics in the wild and crazy '70s in San Francisco! Sex parties, gangsters, crazy Russian mothers, hookers and pimps, death-defying stunts, soft drink euphoria, and a scalped Mexican! Saving lives ain’t glamorous! Romano’s unbelievably true stories will make you laugh, cringe and cry!

"Cowboys, Armageddon, and the Truth" Book Event with Author Scott Terry, Nov. 17th, 2pm!

Florey's Books welcomes author Scott Terry as he discusses his memoir, "Cowboys, Armageddon, and The Truth:How a Gay Child Was Saved from Religion"

***Saturday, Nov. 17th, 2pm***

About the Book:

In Cowboys, Armageddon, and The Truth: How a Gay Child Was Saved from Religion, Scott Terry offers an illuminating glimpse into a child’s sequestered world of abuse, homophobia, and religious extremism. Scott Terry’s memoir is a compelling, poignant and occasionally humorous look into the Jehovah’s Witness faith—a religion that refers to itself as The Truth—and a brave account of Terry's successful escape from a troubled past.

At the age of ten, Terry had embraced the Witnesses’ prediction that the world will come to an end in 1975 and was preparing for Armageddon. As an adolescent, he prayed for God to strip away his growing attraction to other young men. But by adulthood, Terry found himself no longer believing in the promised apocalypse. Through a series of adventures and misadventures, he left the Witness religion behind and became a cowboy, riding bulls in the rodeo. He overcame the hurdles of parental abuse, religious extremism, and homophobia and learned that Truth is a concept of honesty rather than false righteousness, a means to live life openly as a gay man.

About the author:

SCOTT TERRY is a freelance writer, watercolorist, installation artist and businessman. He has written for The San Francisco Chronicle, the Huffington Post, and his work has been covered by NPR, The Wall Street Journal, other popular media outlets. He lives in Northern California.

Sharon the Health Presents: What is Cancer? , Wed. Nov.14 at Florey's!

Florey's Book Co. welcomes Sharon Caren of Sharon the Health. She will lead a free, interactive workshop on the topic: "What is Cancer?"

***Wednesday, Nov.14th 6:45-8:30pm***

From Sharon:

When you hear the word “Cancer” do you immediately go to fear feeling like it’s synonymous with a death sentence? What may also frighten you is that some known cancer cures can be as deadly as the disease. Let’s look at some of the facts and become pro-active.

I believe with a better understanding of how cancer takes hold in the body, it doesn’t have to be scary and we can then take appropriate action. It’s important to explore various healing methods if one has the disease currently. Western medicine and natural methods can be used independently or in combination.

If you’d like more detailed information on “What Is Cancer?”
Please come join me on Wed. Nov. 14th 2012 at 6:45 pm.

"That is the Question" Shakespeare Boardgame Event, with Creator John Ahlbach, Tues. Nov. 13th, 7pm!

Florey's Books welcomes local game creator John Ahlbach, as he discusses his board game "That is the Question: A Game of Shakespeare Knowledge".

***Tuesday, Nov. 13th, 7pm***

About the game:

'That is the Question' is a fun journey through all things Shakespeare.

The game's 500 questions come with a multiple-choice option that players with less experience can use to level the playing field against those with more expertise. The questions cover the plots, language and characters of major and minor plays. They cover Shakespeare on stage and in film in our own time.

Knowledge and educated guessing do not always win in That is the Question. Luck must be with you, too, as you must land on the right spaces to win the two of each type of Character Card needed for victory.

So, when Juliet asks, "What satisfaction canst thou have tonight?", the answer is, play That is the Question with your friends or family!

About the author/creator:

John Ahlbach is a teacher at Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco. He wrote the 500 questions used in That is the Question: A Game of Shakespeare Knowledge. The game board and cards were designed by Mona Toft, a graphic artist in St. Paul , MN. Much of the profits from this game will go to Friends: The National Association of Young People Who Stutter, of which John is a co-founder.

"125 Years of History..." Holy Cross Cemetery Book Event, with Author Jean Bartlett! Nov.10th, 2-4 pm

Florey's Books welcomes author and long-time Pacifica Tribune writer Jean Bartlett to discuss her most recently published book, "125 Years of History, Ministry and Service" Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Colma. The book's cover art is by Canton-born artist Hugh Zeng, who runs Millbrae Frame-Art on El Camino in Millbrae.

***Saturday, November 10th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

In 1880, nearly 234,000 individuals called San Francisco "home," and the population was expanding in leaps and bounds. But the City, at a fixed size of 46.7 square miles was not. Property owners living near San Francisco's big "four" cemeteries РLaurel Hill, Calvary (the Catholic cemetery), the Masonic Cemetery and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery (all in the Lone Mountain-Laurel Heights area) Рbegan to make serious noise about the removal of the dead, so the living would have room to grow. In 1886, San Francisco's second archbishop, Archbishop Patrick Riordan, purchased 300 acres of farmland to build a new Catholic cemetery just five miles south of San Francisco, an area now known as the town of Colma. People thought that was crazy. Who would travel that far south to bury their dead? But on June 7, 1887, when Holy Cross opened its gates for the very first time, two funeral carriages sped out of San Francisco Рeach racing to have the honor of carrying the first "interred." Screeching to a halt first was the carriage carrying the late Timothy Buckley, formerly of 438 Minna Street. Coming in at a close second, was the carriage of the late Bridget Martin, formerly of 1827-1/2 Bush Street. Since that day, 370,000 individuals have come to rest within the gates of Holy Cross, including some of the nationally and locally famous РJoe DiMaggio, A.P. Giannini, George Moscone, Louise M. Davies, Kathryn Forbes and Hildreth Mei̬re. This book contains historical snapshots of some of the Cemetery's interred, with a gravesite locater, as well as a history of the establishment of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco. It is written in honor of the 125th year of Colma's first and largest cemetery.

About the Author:

Born in San Francisco, Jean Bartlett has worked as the Arts and Features Correspondent for the Pacifica Tribune for the past 13 years and continuing. She is additionally the Arts and Features Writer for the Peninsula Progress. Along with these papers, she has written for such print and online media as the San Jose Mercury, the Oakland Tribune, the San Mateo Times and Bay Area Business Woman. A family history biographer, she writes individual histories for both private clients and memorial websites such as Making Everlasting Memories. The author of the award-winning children’s book IndiAsia and the Dragon, Ms. Bartlett has additionally written theater for American Conservatory Theater’s Young Conservatory, the Barefoot Play Readers Repertory Theatre Company and the Pacifica School District . Her online website, Jean’s Magazines, provides press (in-depth interviews and reviews) for artists and musicians. She is the scriptwriter behind the online, Quip Films by Bartlett. "Wait a Lonely Lifetime" Book Event with Leigh Verrill-Rhys, Sat. Oct. 20th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes author Leigh Verrill-Rhys as she discusses her new novel "Wait a Lonely Lifetime".

***Saturday, October, 2oth, 2-4pm***

About the book:

Sylviana Langdon’s marriage went bad from the start. She married the wrong guy, and there was no chance of ever making him right—not for her. Divorced and dating again, she can’t stop thinking about a smart guy she met a few weeks before Steve came into her life. Eric Wasserman walked away from her with no explanation back then. What would he want with an airhead artist’s model now, fifteen years and two little girls later?

Captain Wasserman’s best buddy, Steve Langdon, saved his life and stole his girl. The career Army officer’s second-in-command drops a pretty blue envelope on his desk. The handwriting isn’t familiar, but the name pulls the pin on the grenade that has been in Eric’s mind since he walked away from the green-eyed girl his buddy wanted.

When he doesn’t reply to either of the two letters and a third arrives, his ungentlemanly behavior threatens the morale of his combat support unit. For the sake of his unit, Eric takes the hit from his best buddy’s wife, wondering why Steve has put her up to writing to a man she doesn’t know.

About the author:

A native of Paris Hill, Maine, Leigh Verrill-Rhys spent most of her childhood and early adult years in San Francisco before emigrating to Wales to marry and raise three sons. She has been a writer, editor and lecturer for most of her life, intermingled with career portfolios in marketing, finance, and community arts projects.

An Award-winning editor, she has published three volumes of women's autobiographical writing about their lives in Wales during World War II. She is a member of Romance Writers of America, the Welsh Academy and several RWA chapters. 'Wait a Lonely Lifetime' is her first published novel.

Working with these world class athlete's was how Reposturing was born. It worked for the best of the best and now it works even better for us!

Aaron started out his career as a massage therapist and personal trainer. He worked in a Chiropractic office and then enrolled into Chiropractic College. In his studies, he realized no one was really doing the important muscle work that was needed to balance the body according to gravity. It was the MISSING LINK!

He wants to share his secrets for your health and vitality no matter what age you are. Posture is the most under rated component for a healthy body. Aaron brings the time-honored traditions of Hatha Yoga, with leading edge research and developments in sports performance, exercise science, and kinesiology together to make a simple but effective way to get rid of pain in our everyday lives. This happens through a hands-on technique and a self care plan as well. Amazing? No, it’s scientifically based and cutting edge discoveries he'll share with you. Don't miss it.

Florey's Books invites you to an astronomy talk with Jack Preston.

***Saturday, October 13th, 2-4pm***

About the talk:

What Happened to Pluto and Why Isn’t it a Planet Anymore?

Most of us know that Pluto has been downgraded from its original classification as a normal planet. We will be talking about why this happened, does it make any sense and how Pluto is now classified. We will also look at the history of what the word planet has meant in the past and how it has changed.

About the speaker:

Jack Preston, now retired, was a professor of Astronomy at Cañada College in Redwood City, California from 1984 until 2008. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1966, and that year moved to California where he has lived ever since. He received his Master’s Degree from San Francisco State University in 1974. Jack grew up in New England which is where he learned to love the night sky. He joined his first group of amateur astronomers while in the fifth grade in 1955 and has never lost his love for the stars. He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force in the late 60’s and has taught Astronomy, Physics, and Math ever since. He is currently volunteering at the CuriOdyssey Museum at Coyote Point.

"City of Redemption" Book Event with Author June Ahern, Sat., Sept. 22nd at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes author June Ahern as she discusses her new novel "City of Redemption"

***Saturday, September, 22nd, 3-5pm***

About the book:

'City of Redemption' is a vividly recounted story of lies, betrayal, sex, drugs, and murder that takes place during an unforgettable time and place in history- the Summer of Love in San Francisco, 1967.

Partly to blame for her young son's death and abandoned by her husband, Liz Mackay leaves Scotland in disgrace, hoping for a second chance at love and life. Arriving in San Francisco during the Summer of Love, she soon joins a commune. Her new family is a curious mix: Black Panthers trying to change the world, a Vietnam vet seeking inner peace, a flamboyant hairdresser with dreams of his own, and a flower child and her drug dealer boyfriend who changes girlfriends often.

At first Liz is happy to have found a welcoming home but soon her hope for peace and love begins to diminish. As her new roommates pry into her mysterious past Liz's search for a "jolly good time" brings more grief and a worsening drug addiction. Embroiled in a plot to bring down the Black Panthers, she looks for a way to redeem herself for her part in her son's death. Sharing her fears, she is told, "Keep your mouth shut." Can she save her friends or will she just watch her commune family break apart? No one expects anything heroic from Liz.

About the author:

Ms. Ahern was born in Glasgow, Scotland and raised in San Francisco. She is the author fo two previous books, the novel "The Skye in June" and a consumer's guide "The Timeless Conselor: The Best Guide to a Psychic Reading". She has a son, and lives on the coast with her husband, dog, cat, and horse.

"Only a Girl" Book Event with Author Lian Gouw, Sat., August 4th!

Florey's Books welcomes author Lian Gouw as she discusses her book "Only a Girl"

***Saturday, August 4th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

In 'Only a Girl', three generations of Chinese women struggle for identity against a political backdrop of the World Depression, World War II, and the Indonesian Revolution.

Nanna, the matriarch of the family, strives to preserve the family’s traditional Chinese values while her children are eager to assimilate into Dutch colonial society.

Carolien, Nanna’s youngest daughter, is fixated with the advantages to be gained through adopting a Western lifestyle. She is proven wrong through her turbulent and ultimately failed marriage and by the consequences of raising her daughter in the Dutch culture.

Jenny’s Western upbringing puts her at a disadvantage in the newly independent Indonesian state where Dutch culture is no longer revered.

The unique ways in which Nanna, Carolien and Jenny face their own challenges reveal the complex tale of Chinese society in Indonesia between 1930 and 1952.

About the author:

Lian Gouw was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, then a Dutch colony known as the Netherlands’ East Indies.

Lian’s short stories and poems have appeared in Quietus Magazine, Writing for our Lives, Voices and Visions, The Highland’s Low Down and Reflections.

Her Predicament, an earlier version of the first chapter of her novel, Only A Girl, was included in the 2006 anthology of the SF Writers Conference, Building Bridges from Writers to Readers.

In her writing, Lian explores themes of human relationships, connection with animals, and fable-like fantasy. She is particularly interested in the lives and struggles of women.

"American Popcorn" Book Event with author Dennis Willis, Sat. July 14th!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Dennis Willis as he discusses his new book "American Popcorn: Hollywood and the War on Common Sense"

***Saturday, July 14th, 2-4:30pm***

About the book:

From all-too revealing trailers and remakes, to over-priced fuzzy 3D movies, is there no end to the condescending ways the big studios will try to sell you their latest blockbusters? American Popcorn is a compilation of scathing, honest commentaries from film critic Dennis Willis on a wide variety of subjects, including the broken MPAA rating system, ill-conceived movie star vanity projects, and how tough it is to be a Star Wars fan. Funny and insightful, you'll never look at movies the same way again!

About the author:

Dennis Willis is an award-winning producer, TV host, director, editor, screenwriter and film critic. He produced and co-hosted Reel Life (later called Film Trip) from 1993-98.
Mr. Willis hosts the Flick Nation radio show, a weekly 1-hour look at the entertainment industry from the inside out. He also hosts the weekly syndicated feature Flick Nation: Home Media Guide, and is the Afternoon News film critic on KGO Radio in San Francisco.
His written reviews have appeared in dozens of magazines and newspapers; and he has conducted hundreds interviews with filmmakers and movie stars. Since 2009, Mr. Willis has published the Flick Nation Movie Guide, a compendium of current reviews.
