"Days of Drugs and Sirens" Book Event with Author Michael Romano, Dec. 8th, 2pm!
Florey's Books welcomes Pacifica author Michael Romano as he discusses his new book "Days of Drugs and Sirens"
***Saturday, Dec. 8th, 2-4pm***
About the book:
The hilarious, unbelievable true story of one man's quest to pay his bills and find a decent meal, and how he saved a few lives along the way.
Michael Romano had seen it all: gangs, crime and war! But nothing prepared him for his next gig, as one of America’s first paramedics in the wild and crazy '70s in San Francisco! Sex parties, gangsters, crazy Russian mothers, hookers and pimps, death-defying stunts, soft drink euphoria, and a scalped Mexican! Saving lives ain’t glamorous! Romano’s unbelievably true stories will make you laugh, cringe and cry!

"Cowboys, Armageddon, and the Truth" Book Event with Author Scott Terry, Nov. 17th, 2pm!
Florey's Books welcomes author Scott Terry as he discusses his memoir, "Cowboys, Armageddon, and The Truth:How a Gay Child Was Saved from Religion"
***Saturday, Nov. 17th, 2pm***
About the Book:
In Cowboys, Armageddon, and The Truth: How a Gay Child Was Saved from Religion, Scott Terry offers an illuminating glimpse into a child’s sequestered world of abuse, homophobia, and religious extremism. Scott Terry’s memoir is a compelling, poignant and occasionally humorous look into the Jehovah’s Witness faith—a religion that refers to itself as The Truth—and a brave account of Terry's successful escape from a troubled past.
At the age of ten, Terry had embraced the Witnesses’ prediction that the world will come to an end in 1975 and was preparing for Armageddon. As an adolescent, he prayed for God to strip away his growing attraction to other young men. But by adulthood, Terry found himself no longer believing in the promised apocalypse. Through a series of adventures and misadventures, he left the Witness religion behind and became a cowboy, riding bulls in the rodeo. He overcame the hurdles of parental abuse, religious extremism, and homophobia and learned that Truth is a concept of honesty rather than false righteousness, a means to live life openly as a gay man.
About the author:
SCOTT TERRY is a freelance writer, watercolorist, installation artist and businessman. He has written for The San Francisco Chronicle, the Huffington Post, and his work has been covered by NPR, The Wall Street Journal, other popular media outlets. He lives in Northern California.

Sharon the Health Presents: What is Cancer? , Wed. Nov.14 at Florey's!
Florey's Book Co. welcomes Sharon Caren of Sharon the Health. She will lead a free, interactive workshop on the topic: "What is Cancer?"
***Wednesday, Nov.14th 6:45-8:30pm***
From Sharon:
When you hear the word “Cancer” do you immediately go to fear feeling like it’s synonymous with a death sentence? What may also frighten you is that some known cancer cures can be as deadly as the disease. Let’s look at some of the facts and become pro-active.
I believe with a better understanding of how cancer takes hold in the body, it doesn’t have to be scary and we can then take appropriate action. It’s important to explore various healing methods if one has the disease currently. Western medicine and natural methods can be used independently or in combination.
If you’d like more detailed information on “What Is Cancer?”
Please come join me on Wed. Nov. 14th 2012 at 6:45 pm.

"That is the Question" Shakespeare Boardgame Event, with Creator John Ahlbach, Tues. Nov. 13th, 7pm!
Florey's Books welcomes local game creator John Ahlbach, as he discusses his board game "That is the Question: A Game of Shakespeare Knowledge".
***Tuesday, Nov. 13th, 7pm***
About the game:
'That is the Question' is a fun journey through all things Shakespeare.
The game's 500 questions come with a multiple-choice option that players with less experience can use to level the playing field against those with more expertise. The questions cover the plots, language and characters of major and minor plays. They cover Shakespeare on stage and in film in our own time.
Knowledge and educated guessing do not always win in That is the Question. Luck must be with you, too, as you must land on the right spaces to win the two of each type of Character Card needed for victory.
So, when Juliet asks, "What satisfaction canst thou have tonight?", the answer is, play That is the Question with your friends or family!
About the author/creator:
John Ahlbach is a teacher at Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco. He wrote the 500 questions used in That is the Question: A Game of Shakespeare Knowledge. The game board and cards were designed by Mona Toft, a graphic artist in St. Paul , MN. Much of the profits from this game will go to Friends: The National Association of Young People Who Stutter, of which John is a co-founder.

"125 Years of History..." Holy Cross Cemetery Book Event, with Author Jean Bartlett! Nov.10th, 2-4 pm
Florey's Books welcomes author and long-time Pacifica Tribune writer Jean Bartlett to discuss her most recently published book, "125 Years of History, Ministry and Service" Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Colma. The book's cover art is by Canton-born artist Hugh Zeng, who runs Millbrae Frame-Art on El Camino in Millbrae.
***Saturday, November 10th, 2-4pm***
About the book:
In 1880, nearly 234,000 individuals called San Francisco "home," and the population was expanding in leaps and bounds. But the City, at a fixed size of 46.7 square miles was not. Property owners living near San Francisco's big "four" cemeteries – Laurel Hill, Calvary (the Catholic cemetery), the Masonic Cemetery and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery (all in the Lone Mountain-Laurel Heights area) – began to make serious noise about the removal of the dead, so the living would have room to grow. In 1886, San Francisco's second archbishop, Archbishop Patrick Riordan, purchased 300 acres of farmland to build a new Catholic cemetery just five miles south of San Francisco, an area now known as the town of Colma. People thought that was crazy. Who would travel that far south to bury their dead? But on June 7, 1887, when Holy Cross opened its gates for the very first time, two funeral carriages sped out of San Francisco – each racing to have the honor of carrying the first "interred." Screeching to a halt first was the carriage carrying the late Timothy Buckley, formerly of 438 Minna Street. Coming in at a close second, was the carriage of the late Bridget Martin, formerly of 1827-1/2 Bush Street. Since that day, 370,000 individuals have come to rest within the gates of Holy Cross, including some of the nationally and locally famous – Joe DiMaggio, A.P. Giannini, George Moscone, Louise M. Davies, Kathryn Forbes and Hildreth Meière. This book contains historical snapshots of some of the Cemetery's interred, with a gravesite locater, as well as a history of the establishment of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco. It is written in honor of the 125th year of Colma's first and largest cemetery.
About the Author:
Born in San Francisco, Jean Bartlett has worked as the Arts and Features Correspondent for the Pacifica Tribune for the past 13 years and continuing.
