January 2015 Poetry at Florey's!
Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event.
***Saturday, January 31st, 7:30-9:30pm***
From Sherri:
Though continuingly astonished by the swift passage of time, it is, indeed, time for the first poetry reading of the new year at Florey's Books! If it's been a while since you've joined us, consider coming to this celebration of language and poetry, and if you've been with us for previous readings, consider helping us welcome in the new, poetic year. Enliven the celebration by bringing a snack or beverage to share. These evenings feature wonderful poetry, light refreshments, convivial company, conversation with like-minded others, an open mic to share your own or your favorite poet's work, and an opportunity to support a brave and staunchly independent book store.
About the featured poets:
KARI ANN FLICKINGER
In her poetry, Kari Flickinger makes use of form and sound to evoke the emotions of her observations on daily life: at times the mundane bits, and sometimes in her unique attempt at grasping toward the infinite. She has been published in The Falcon Scratch, and Susurrus Literary Magazines and won an honorable mention in the first annual Diablo Valley College Literary Contest. Her lyrics and music have been featured in a documentary by journalist Peter Laufer. She works as a tutor living in the Bay Area with her flat-faced black cat, Oscar and her computer-programming fella, Bill. Also, her inexplicable passion for ocean critters compels her to paint pictures of jellyfish, often.
CHRISTINA LLOYD
Born in Hong Kong, raised in the Philippines and educated in the United States, Christina Lloyd holds an MA in Hispanic languages and literatures from U.C. Berkeley, and an MA in creative writing from Lancaster University (U.K.). In addition to publishing two chapbooks, her work appears in various journals, including The North.

"Welcome to the Big Leagues" Event with Author Carmine Del Sordi, January 17th at Florey's!
Florey's Books welcomes local author Carmine Del Sordi, as he discusses his new book "Welcome to the Big Leagues: Nine Innings of Essential Tips for the Corporate Rookie".
***Saturday, January 17th, 2-4pm***
From Carmine, about the book:
With more than 17 years of demonstrated success working within Fortune 500 companies that span both coasts of the US, I learned what it takes to play the game. More importantly, attending the school of hard knocks has tested and helped me to unlock the secrets of sustained success and greatness. As a business leader, my goal is simple … to get each member of my team to strive for full potential and perform at their very best. This meant coaching employees on how to prevail against pressure, face their fears and set out to accomplish greater things the right way. I wrote Welcome to the Big Leagues to help the Corporate Rookie of today to do all of this and much more. My focus was not only on building a strategy to coach this young, ambitious and often misguided group to thrive in career, but also to inspire them to pursue a more fulfilling life.
Crafting the blueprint for success is easy, maintaining the discipline and focus to follow it on a daily basis is the trying part that will test you in ways beyond imagination. Welcome to the Big Leagues prepares readers for this journey. Baseball is used as the backdrop, as many of the stories around the game and its players are relevant to the business world. From the hacks to the incredibly talented, and the humble to the arrogant, you will be forced to deal with all types in the workplace. In baseball, players need to be both mentally and physically tough. They face their fears each game day for the world to see and judge. Baseball is a competitive environment where only the best of the best make it. Players who struggle will work feverishly to avoid the slump. Even those players who fail and strike out 70% of the time are considered to be among the best in the game.
About the Author:
Carmine Del Sordi is an entrepreneur turned business leader who has significant experience and achievements within Fortune 500 companies that span the consumer goods, biotechnology and information security industries. He is passionate and committed to leading highly engaged teams, in addition to bringing out the personal best in corporate rookies. Del Sordi's strong collaborative skills and tell-it-like-it-is management style have allowed him to thrive on both coasts. He holds a BA from Arizona State University and earned his MBA from the University of San Francisco. Carmine and his wife, Kristin, and step-daughter, Hailey, live in Pacifica, California.
