Backpocket Crosswords -Book event with author Joanne Shwed, May 5th at Florey's.
Florey's Books welcomes local author Joanne Shwed as she discusses her book, "Backpocket Crosswords: Handmade Puzzles".
It's also Joanne's 65th birthday party!
***Saturday, May 5th, 2-4pm***
About the book:
Joanne Shwed has created these 24 handmade puzzles with common words and user-friendly clues. This book is dedicated to the Radiation Oncology Department at Seton Medical Center (Daly City, California). While Joanne and her husband Tom Ekkens waited for his radiation treatments, they (and others in the waiting room) worked on the clues, which seemed to calm their nerves, raise their spirits, and even get a couple of laughs.
About the author:
Joanne Shwed and Tom Ekkens have lived in Pacifica since 1989. Through her business, Backspace Ink, she has provided editing and publishing services to authors since 1985. She has written several short stories and essays, some of which have won writing awards. Joanne (and friends) love to play music and, for 25 years, they volunteered for Bread & Roses, which provides entertainment to “shut-ins” in nursing and convalescent homes and hospitals.

April 2018 Poerty at Florey's
Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event!
***Saturday, April 28th, 7:30-9:30pm***
The featured poets this month are Patrice Haan and Sherri Rose-Walker.
From Sherri:
Dear Community of Poets and Those Who Love Poetry,
We have entered the days of National Poetry Month! I hope you will be reading, writing and listening to poetry all month long, and reciting it at the slightest provocation! It's a wonderful time to surprise your partner, your kids, your neighbors, or the grocery clerk with some poetic moments.
And if you have any time left over, I'd like to invite you to join Aaron and me for this month's evening of poetry at Florey's Book Company. Patrice Haan, Celtic harper, singer, song writer and poet, and I, will be your features, celebrating the poetics of language and of sound. We'll also give a nod to Shakespeare's birthday (the 23rd, as near as can be surmised), so if you have anything inspired by or celebrating the Bard, do bring it along. As always, I also invite you to bring your own work to share at open mic (3 minutes, please), and ask you to bring drinks or snacks for the table, if you can.
About the featured poets:
PATRICE HAAN
Patrice Haan (Oakland CA) is a harper, singer, songwriter, composer and wordsmith, devoted to the healing presence of listening.
More and more I turn to poetry and lyrics as a source of comfort, of discovery, of deep communication. I’m interested in words that don’t sell but compel, that don’t repress but reveal, that don’t slight but invite. I’m interested in mystery, beauty, playfulness, grief, longing, and outrage – the whole megilah.
I love that language breathes when it is read or recited. Like life, like singing, we enter experience by breath.
And I love that poetry and lyrics require and invite listening. It is my conviction that listening will save us.
I’ve been writing all my life and actively composing for over 20 years. In recent years, because of my increased dedication to songwriting, I decided to use harp to add a new dimension to my poetry.
I have had poems published in San Francisco Peace & Hope, We’Moon, North Coast Literary Review. I am so honoured to return to Florey’s Books Poetry Series.
Visit Patrice’s sites at www.patricehaan.com, www.leftoverdreams.com and www.healingmuses.org.
SHERRI ROSE-WALKER
Sherri Rose-Walker is a life-long poet who wrote her first poem at the age of seven. Her poetry is principally concerned with deepening the inner life of the Feminine, and seasons of the soul. Her work has been published in the We'Moon datebook and wall calendars (most recently 2018), Bay Area Poet's Seasonal Review, San Francisco Peace and Hope, Poetalk, and Marin Poetry Center Anthologies, among others, and her chapbooks Two Trees and Celtic Ray. She was featured in an online series by Jean Bartlett (www.bartlettbiographies.com),and hosts a monthly poetry reading in Pacifica (floreysbookco@yahoo.com). Florey's Book Club: 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' April 26th!
Florey's welcomes you to our book club!
***Thursday, April 26th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***
Come by for a chat about our April book, 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' by John Fowles.
About the book:
The scene is the village of Lyme Regis on Dorset's Lyme Bay..."the largest bite from the underside of England's out-stretched southwestern leg." The major characters in the love-intrigue triangle are Charles Smithson, 32, a gentleman of independent means & vaguely scientific bent; his fiancée, Ernestina Freeman, a pretty heiress daughter of a wealthy & pompous dry goods merchant; & Sarah Woodruff, mysterious & fascinating...deserted after a brief affair with a French naval officer a short time before the story begins. Obsessed with an irresistible fascination for the enigmatic Sarah, Charles is hurtled by a moment of consummated lust to the brink of the existential void. Duty dictates that his engagement to Tina must be broken as he goes forth once again to seek the woman who has captured his Victorian soul & gentleman's heart.
About the author:
John Fowles (1926-2005) was educated at Oxford and subsequently lectured in English at universities in Greece and the UK. The success of his first novel, The Collector, published in 1963, allowed him to devote all his time to writing. His books include the internationally acclaimed and bestselling novels The Magus, The French Lieutenant's Woman, and Daniel Martin. Fowles spent the last decades of his life on the southern coast of England in the small harbor town of Lyme Regis.

Debussy's Paris - Book event with author Catherine Kautsky, Apr. 11th at Florey's!
Florey's Books welcomes author and pianist Catherine Kautsky as she discusses her book, "Debussy's Paris: Piano Portraits of the Belle Époque". She will also perform some related piano selections.
***Wednesday, April 11th, 7pm***
About the book:
Claude Debussy's exquisite piano works have captivated generations with their dreamlike atmosphere and mysterious soundscapes.Written in Paris at the height of the Belle Époque, the music creates a soundtrack for Parisians' enjoyment of such delights as clowns, mermaids, eccentric dances, and the dark tales of Edgar Allan Poe. Debussy's Paris: Piano Portraits of the Belle Époque explores how key works reflect not only the most appealing and innocent aspects of Paris but also more disquieting attitudes of the time such as racism, colonial domination, and nationalistic hostility. Debussy left no avenue unexplored, and his piano works present a sweeping overview of the passions, vices, and obsessions of the era. Pianist Catherine Kautsky reveals little-known elements of Parisian culture and weaves the music, the man, the city, and the era into an indissoluble whole. Her portrait will delight anyone who has ever been entranced by Debussy's music or the city that inspired it.
About the author:
Catherine Kautsky is chair of keyboard at Lawrence University and has been lauded by the New York Times as "a pianist who can play Mozart and Schubert as though their sentiments and habits of speech coincided exactly with hers." Visit
https://www.debussysparis.com/ to enjoy Kautsky's performance of many of Debussy's works, as well as additional artworks, poems, and primary source materials from this book.
