Chronicles of the Angels of Eden - Book event with author Tygarjas Twyrls Bigstyck!
Florey's Books welcomes author Tygarjas Twyrls Bigstyck as he discusses his new book, "Chronicles of the Angels of Eden".
***Saturday, September 7th, 2:00pm-4:00pm***
About the book:
You'd think that helping people would be easy if you were an angel. Frankly, they thought so too before taking God up on the opportunity to eat the fruit form the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Now, finding themselves in human form, they embark on a journey of thousands of years learning not only how not to make matters worse, but how to eventually teach human beings it's possible to make things even better than they might suspect. If they succeed, they get to reunite with their selves, having divided in two after eating the fruit, as well as, ultimately, the Creative Divinity, divided from or not, they all ultimately serve.
About the author:
Tygarjas Twyrls Bigstyck believes in creation, not to be confused with creationism. He believes that twirling a large staff is a good way to demonstrate the common motion directing creation. He believes that few sticks are larger, in concept, than pens; twirling being a fine euphemism for creating a universe into the mind of a reader. And, of course, anything stick-like that can co-create an actual person, he regards as being metaphorically ginormous. Finally, after so many years past the publication of his first novel, Passenger, he is grateful to be able to share his new creation with the world. Accordingly, may you enjoy.

Florey's Book Club: 'Regeneration' August 22nd!
Florey's welcomes you to our book club!
***Thursday, August 22nd, 7:00pm-8:30pm***
Come by for a chat about our August book, 'Regeneration' by Pat Barker.
About the book:
In 1917 Siegfried Sasson, noted poet and decorated war hero, publicly refused to continue serving as a British officer in World War I. His reason: the war was a senseless slaughter. He was officially classified "mentally unsound" and sent to Craiglockhart War Hospital. There a brilliant psychiatrist, Dr. William Rivers, set about restoring Sassoon's "sanity" and sending him back to the trenches. This novel tells what happened as only a novel can. It is a war saga in which not a shot is fired. It is a story of a battle for a man's mind in which only the reader can decide who is the victor, who the vanquished, and who the victim.
About the author:
Pat Barker has earned a place in the first rank of contemporary British writers with such novels as Union Street, Regeneration (shortlisted for Britain's prestigious Booker Prize and chosen by the New York Times as one of the four best novels of 1992), The Eye in the Door (winner of the 1993 Guardian fiction prize), The Ghost Road (winner of the 1995 Booker Prize), and Noonday. Pat Barker lives in Durham, England.

Exploring the story of Ruth & Naomi through writing & discussion w/ Nitza Agam
Florey's Books invites you to a writing workshop exploring the story of Ruth and Naomi through writing and discussion:
"For where you go, I go." Facilitated by Nitza Agam, poet and author, and Simcha (Susan) Greenspan, Bay Area arts specialist, calligrapher, and educator.
***Saturdays, August 17th, 24th, and 31st. 1:00-2:30pm***
In three sessions we will explore the biblical story of Ruth and Naomi and focus on the famous quote Ruth says to Naomi as they are about to embark on their journey as women alone. " For Wherever You Go, I will Go." ( Ruth 1:16) What does it mean to pledge our loyalty as women to another woman? What might it have meant back then? Who do we identify with in that story of two women, a mother in law, and her daughter? Are we that daughter or the mother? Or both? How does this pledge of loyalty define Ruth apart from being a wife or a mother? To follow Naomi, Ruth must abandon or thought she had abandoned any hope of marriage or motherhood. We will explore our own roles as mothers or daughters, daughters in law, mothers in law, and the autonomous self.
We will examine the text and use our own lives to respond to this ancient and universal story of two women.
Led by Nitza Agam, poet and author ( Scent of Jasmine, Love Letters to my mother) as well as various articles and essays in magazines and in The SF Chronicle.
Bring a journal and yourself. Possible sources will be used to aid us in our thinking and in our writing.
Come to one session, or all three!
