"From Roaring Hate to Ramrod Straight" Book Event with Author Peter Beck, Mar. 23rd at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Peter Beck, as he discusses his new book "From Roaring Hate to Ramrod Straight - A Journey from Hitler's Germany to the US Marine Corps"

***Saturday March 23rd, 2-4pm***

About the book and author:

Peter Beck, a resident of Pacifica for the last 22 years, has just written a book about his life. On the surface, this might not sound very interesting. However, it takes only about two pages to realize this is no ordinary autobiography.

Born in Berlin in 1935, his family luckily escaped the clutches of the Nazi's solely on the basis of his father's valorous acts in combat during World War One. Flying out of Berlin in 1939, he and his mother and father landed in Genoa, Italywhere they were able to board a ship which took them to Guayaquil, Ecudor. Once in South America, the family settled down only to be uprooted again when the author contracted Tuberculosis, which enabled the family to immigrate to the United States for treatment.

Arriving in New York City in 1940, the book details the experiences of growing up in New York City in the 1940s and 1950s, and then details a 23 year career as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps, a career that took him all over the world and included assignments as the Guard Commander at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; the Director of the Marine Corps Drill Instructor School; and 13 months of combat with an infantry battalion and regiment in the jungles of Vietnam.

Staff assignments in Washington, DC and Honolulu, Hawaii give the reader an insight in to a military organization that no longer exists.

The author is non-judgmental, relating his story in a factual manner, straying from his observational style only during the chapter on Vietnam where he writes from first-hand experiences and occasionally allows his emotions concerning the war in Vietnam to override his journalistic style.

The book is a wonderful snapshot of two eras that no longer exist. A vibrant and dynamic 1940s New York City, and the post-Korean War Marine Corps leading up to our entry into the Vietnam War. As the author states "It's like the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants, great while they lasted, but never to be again."

-----------------------------------
All profits realized from the sale of the book will be donated to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund. The Fund aims to aid the families of our Wounded Warriors as they learn to cope with the horrific injuries sustained by thier loved ones in the line of duty. To date, the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund has disbursed over $67 million to over 50,000 recipients.

Florey's Books welcomes local authors Heather Criswell and Taryn Voget as they discuss their new book "How to Raise a Happy Child (and be happy too)".

***Saturday, March. 16th, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

'How to Raise a Happy Child (and be happy too)' is no ordinary parenting 'how-to' book. You will discover how to feel like a parenting pro. You will get an opportunity to step inside the mind of kid whisperer Heather Criswell and understand how she discovered (over 25 years and 30,000 kids) what works with every child, in every situation, every time.

This book is a totally refreshing new approach to parenting. Inside, you will get:

- Step-by-step techniques for getting what you want without using the word "no", time-outs, or rewards
- Simple strategies to bring out the best in your and your child every day
- Amazing tools for creating a stress-free environment
- 22 scenarios with the exact words to use in common situations to get the results you desire
- 8 how-to videos included so you can see the body language, words, and voice tone that get results

Most other parenting books or advice focus on how to use control, discipline, punishments and rewards to get the desired behavior. The techniques presented here offer an inspiring, different new approach for parents who want to raise children who thrive, and have fun doing it.

About the authors:

Heather Criswell is a kid whisperer who has spent 25 years working with over 30,000 children. She is a parent coach, a keynote speaker, and an author, sharing her unique approach and wisdom with families around the world.

Taryn Voget is the cofounder of the Everyday Genius Institute. She is the author of six books on genius, a frequent keynote speaker, a consultant, a coach, and a thought leader on genius and human potential.

They both live in the San Francisco Bay area.

My Name is Mata Hari tells the story of Margaretha Geertruida Zelle, a young Dutch woman who became the infamous dancer, courtesan, and World War I double agent known as Mata Hari. She married the older Rudolph MacLeod, a military officer, and travelled with him to the Dutch East Indies. Claiming her mother's Javanese ancestry, she changed her name to Mata Hari, Malay for "eye of the day".

Mata Hari danced on stages across Europe and the Middle East, and took many high-ranking military and government officials as her lovers. At the end of a tumultuous life, convicted for espionage during the First World War yet sustained by her pride, she said, "I am a genuine cortesan. And I am a dancer in the true sense."

Florey's Book Co. welcomes Sharon Caren of Sharon the Health. She will lead a free, interactive workshop on the topic: "Attention Baby Boomers, How to Pay for Long Term Care"

***Wednesday, Jan.16th 6:45-8:30pm***

From Sharon:

How to Pay for Long Term Care – New Legislation brings a New Possibility
With Guest Speaker: David Kitaen, CLTC

The United States is in the middle of a perfect storm – An aging population. 10 Million people need Long Term Care. Political Leaders know it’s impossible for Medicare and Medicaid to keep pace. Federal and State governments are looking for alternatives to private pay for LTC.

However, there are NEW funding options for the Consumer…
In 2011, The National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) passed the Life Insurance Consumer Disclosure Model Law. It requires Insurance Companies to now inform policy owners they have an alternative to lapsing any Life Insurance Policy to pay for LTC Care at Home or in any LTC Facility in the U.S.

David Kitaen was the first Long Term Care Insurance Broker in the U.S. to complete a Conversion of Life Insurance to a Long Term Care Assurance Benefit in 2011 after the legislation was passed! Come hear how this might help you or a family member.

Poetry Reading at Florey's Celebrating Poet William Stafford's Birthday, Saturday, Jan. 12, 7:30pm

Florey's invites you to a poetry reading in celebration of the poet William Stafford.

***Saturday, Jan. 12th, 7:30-9:30pm***

Stafford, who died in the early 90s, was a native of Kansas, a conscientious objector in WWII (who served 5 years in an American prison camp, where he developed his life-long habit of arising long before dawn to write a poem every day), a teacher of literature and poetry at William and Mary College in Oregon, married and father of four, who, if his daily poem didn't work out as planned, famously said, "I lower my expectations." His students adored him, especially when he advised them not to be afraid to write bad poems!

The William Stafford Society in Oregon initiated the celebration of Stafford's birthday, and there are now multiple such celebrations in the country. The evening will run a bit differently than our usual poetic events. The feature will be a video of an absolutely marvelous and rollicking conversation between Stafford and his great friend Robert Bly. The two were as different as poets and people can be, but the sparks that fly between them are incredibly inspiring! Then, at open mic, we ask anyone who wants to read to share a poem by Stafford, or inspired by knowing him, or his vision of life. If you haven't read his work, we urge you to find some and, as Stafford said in one of his poems, "You, reading this, be ready"; be ready for a compelling, fierce, reflective, tender and spacious view of our human life on earth and beyond.

We hope to see you!
