TWO Book Events for November!

Florey's Books invites you to the first of two book events scheduled for November. Read the full entry for information on both events. Be sure to look for articles about the authors in the Pacifica Tribune.

First, meet local author Grace Baumgarten as she discusses her experiences detailed in her new book: "The Victory Within".

***Saturday, November 6th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

One day, I entered my name in the Google search box, and I found all the court documents about the case that I had filed under Title VII of the Civil Rights of 1964 against the Board of Equalization and the labor union SEIU. Because I wanted to be remembered in this world and in this life as a tenacious fighter rather than a defeated complainer, even if I did it apprehensively, I became a pro se vs. the CA Attorney General and four of his deputies at the court hearings and trials that went all the way up to the US Supreme Court.

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men and women do nothing," so a wise person once said. I acted and did my moral duty and obligation to protect and defend the State and US Constitution, even though at times my will, intellect, and emotions would not let me do it. I had to try—even if I had to die trying—than not try at all.

I had to fight for my rights and the rights of others, protect those who could not protect themselves, and defend those who are weaker than me. I would rather be hated or loved than to be forgotten by those people who I fought for with everything I had. I wrote this book about my life, so you will know that there is no victory without a fight, and there is not a crown without a cross.

About the author:

Grace Baumgarten is a Filipina who came to America to persue her dreams. She worked for the Board of Equalization and was a member of the SEIU for 17 years until she was terminated. Against all odds, she fought against them as a pro-se litigant in the federal courts.

For the second book event in November, we welcome author Claudia Hoag McGarry as she discusses her new novel: "My Scorpio Soul".

***SUNDAY, November 14th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

Stalker (n) Someone who keeps following or contacting someone else... in an annoying or frightening way; someone who prowls or sneaks about, usually with unlawful intentions.

(Collins Dictionary)

Meet Tempest McTierney, devoted wife, teacher, and mother who is living her idyllic life by the coast of the Mexican Gulf. That is, until things begin to happen that lead to her idyll being swept away. When her husband, a doctor, is framed for a patient's death at a Galveston hospital, someone begins to take an inordinate interest in the family.

As Tempest tries to cope with the daily torment this obsessed perpetrator inflicts, little by little, her thoughts turn to revenge and her life spirals out of control. Told in a journalistic fashion with personal memories woven into the daily dread she awakes to. Slowly, we reach the inevitable climax, and we, like Tempest, realize there is
only one way out…

About the author:

Claudia Hoag McGarry is a New Orleans native but presently lives in California and teaches writing. She has three adult children. Her husband is a musician and college professor. She has written ten feature length screenplays, three of which are “biopic.”

My Scorpio Soul is her first novel.

Florey's Books selected for Pacifica Small Business Neighborhood Renovation Program

Pacifica Tribune
Posted: 09/30/2010 06:00:00 AM PDT

Aaron Schlieve and Pacifica's very own Florey's Books has been selected to be the recipient of the Pacifica Small Business Neighborhood Renovation Program. This is the second annual program sponsored by Wells Fargo in partnership with San Mateo County Supervisor Rose Jacobs Gibson, City of Pacifica Economic Development Committee, Job Train, Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center and Philanthropy by Design. The program will provide $3,000 plus professionals and students to redesign storefronts and/or interiors with the goal of helping small businesses increase visibility, marketing, and visual merchandising.

Schlieve will be required to:

Work collaboratively with a design professional and student volunteer.

Participate in a minimum of four marketing and business growth workshops.

Volunteer a minimum of 10 hours with the renovation (e.g., painting, demolition work)

Meet with the design team to discuss design plan, project or necessary changes.

Complete pre- and post- survey that demonstrates the impact the program has on the business.

Encouraged to apply by Mayor Pro-tem MaryAnn Nihart, Schlieve worked with Courtney Conlon, CEO of the Pacifica Chamber of Commerce to complete the application process. "Aaron expressed excitement from the beginning. I just knew this would be perfect for him as a young business person." Conlon said. "He will really make use of this opportunity."

All completed small business renovation projects were reviewed and judged by a panel of senior managers, interior design industry representatives, and community leaders. Sue Vaterlaus from the Pacifica Economic Development Committee participated in the review process. "It was incredibly rigorous and very informative with businesses from Pacifica, Daly City, and unincorporated North Fair Oaks as this year's focus. Florey's scored very high. I am excited to be part of bringing this opportunity to such a deserving young businessperson and a Pacifica iconic business."

Schlieve began his orientation Sept. 16 and Conlon was slated to attend with him. "This is how it should work. Businesses, Pacifica Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Pacifica working together for everyone's benefit" said Nihart.

TWO Book Events for October!

Florey's Books invites you to the first of two book events scheduled for October. Read the full entry for information on both events.

First, come meet local author Shari Bookstaff as she discusses her experiences and book: "When Life Throws You Lemons...Make Cranberry Juice!"

***Saturday, October 16th, 2-4pm***

About the book and author:
When my kids were learning to walk, I remember walking behind them, ready to catch them if they stumbled backward. I never dreamed that thirteen years later my kids would be walking behind me, ready to catch me if I stumble backward.

I was 42 years old when I was diagnosed with a benign, operable brain tumor in July 2006. Doctors predicted a short hospital stay followed by a speedy recovery. Complications arose, giving me lifelong obstacles that I never could have prepared for.

A divorced mother of two beautiful, talented, wonderful children, I had high hopes for a bright and happy future. I tried online dating, which got me a few cups of coffee, but no real dates. A couple of dating disasters later, my dating karma was beginning to change when my brain tumor was diagnosed.

My life since that fateful day has been focused on regaining basic human functions: breathing, swallowing, walking, etc. I am working again, and trying to be a good mother to my two beautiful, talented, wonderful children.

Putting a positive spin on life's disasters doesn't always work, but looking for, and accepting, positive things in spite of life's disasters works. Instead of making lemonade out of lemons, I add life's sweet sugar and cranberries to my lemons. This makes life much more palatable.

For our second book event in October, Florey's welcomes local author Tygarjas Twyrls Bigstyck as he discusses his new book: ""Passenger: A Divinely Inspired Comedy in 13 Books”.

***Saturday, October 23rd, 2-4pm***

About the book:
After a long day of work it's time to catch the bus home. Tim is immediately a little uneased by the voice of his dead father; he is very much uneased by the words of that voice declaring the destination of this bus is Hell. With no need to rush to arrival at the promised eternity waiting at the end of this ride, Tim will take the scenic route through what his alternative might have been. Introduced to a reality of Heaven a bit different from what he had expected, his questions of what he possibly might have done to warrant Hell are quickly replaced with questions of how much worse Hell could possibly be than the Heaven he finds himself journeying through. Caught between the horror of the certainty of the present, and the uncertainty of how much worse the future might be, Tim finds himself wondering as the wheels roll 'round whether he ever wants to get off the bus he is sure he wishes he had never boarded to begin with.

About the author:
Tygarjas Twyrls Bigstyck was slightly unnerved as to the question of why any greater conscious entity, as the masses tend to claim, would construct a being to feel pain and be privy to the inevitability of the cessation of its existence. After a great deal of independent study as a young adult the answer to this question became clear; transmutation of energy. With a desire to understand further what the greatest potential was for a "transmuter of energy," Tygarjas studied English and Religious Studies at Tulane University where he completed his BA in both.

"Broadmoor Village" author event, Saturday, August 28th!

Florey's Books invites you to meet local author Dave Crimmen as he discusses his new book: "Images of America: Broadmoor Village".

***Saturday, August 28th, 2-4pm***

About the book: Broadmoor Village, the little community that embodies the American ethic of independence, survives despite neighboring annexations, budget crises, and even Mother Nature. This subdivision was built in San Mateo County by the Stoneson Company just after World War II, targeting returning veterans and their families. Established before Henry Doelger made neighboring Westlake, Westmoor, St. Francis, and other communities since annexed by Daly City, Broadmoor has repeatedly chosen to stay unincorporated and independent. This attitude has shaped Broadmoor through the years to assert its autonomous stature while surrounded by larger cities.

About the author: Author Dave Crimmen lived in Broadmoor Village for 30 years, where he graduated from Garden Village and Ben Franklin schools. Dave is a professional musician whose original music has been used in major motion pictures like The Game, starring Michael Douglas, and also in television shows like CBS's Cold Case and FOX's Melrose Place. This collection of images from the Broadmoor Police Department, Broadmoor Property Owner's Association, Westmoor Alumni, and the author's personal archives tell a real-life version of "David vs. Goliath."

"I Should Have Given Them Water" book event, Sunday, July 18th!

Florey's Books invites you to meet local poet Eileen Malone as she signs and reads from her new book "I Should Have Given Them Water".

***Sunday, July 18th, 2-4 pm***

About the book: 'I Should Have Given Them Water' is a challenging new collection of poetry by poet Eileen Malone. With an unflinching generosity of lush imagery, Malone turns nouns into verbs and verbs into nouns with carefully honed incongruity. She navigates the abstract, messy, expressionistic and humanistic, while maintaining tough, straight forward intensity. These poems are packed with powerful, penetrating struggles by a well-seasoned Feminist (mental health activist), feminine (wife, mother, daughter) poet with an amazing capability for risking, loving, and suspecting her world, all at the same time.

About the author: Eileen Malone lives in Broadmoor Village. Over five hundred of her poems have been published in literary journals and anthologies, many earning awards and citations and recently two nominated for Pushcart prizes. Her book on Writer’s Groups was published by Wiley and her award winning chapbook Letters with Taloned Claws was published by Poet’s Corner Press. She founded and directs the Soul-Making Literary Competition; is a voting member for the Northern California Book Reviewers Association; a branch officer for the National League of American Pen Women; an activist for the National Alliance on Mental Illness; and serves on the Advisory Committee for Caminar (support services for people with disabilities). She also hosts/produces a television interview show on creativity, now streaming on the internet.

"Wyndano's Cloak" book event, Saturday, June 26th!

Florey's Books invites you to meet award-winning author A.R. Silverberry as he introduces his new book "Wyndano's Cloak".

***Saturday, June 26th, 2-4pm***

Discover the Magic of Wyndano’s Cloak!

Jen has settled into a peaceful life when a terrifying event awakens old fears of being homeless and alone, of a danger horrible enough to destroy her family and shatter her world forever.

She is certain that Naryfel, a shadowy figure from her past, has returned and is concentrating the full force of her hate on Jen’s family. But how will she strike? A knife in the dark? An attack from her legions? Or with the dark arts and twisted creatures she commands with sinister cunning.

Wyndano’s Cloak may be Jen’s only hope. If she can only trust that she has what it takes to use it . . .

A tale of madness, friendship, and courage, Wyndano’s Cloak reveals the transformative power of love and forgiveness, and the terrible consequences of denying who you really are.

"Pacifica: Then and Now" book event Sunday, April 25th!

Florey's Books invites you to meet Pacifica authors Kathleen Manning and Jerry Crow as they discuss their new book "Pacifica: Then and Now".

***Sunday, April 25th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

Pacifica and its coast, once envisioned as a string of resorts, casinos, and vacation cottages in place of artichoke fields, was overlooked after the failure of the Ocean Shore Railroad in 1920. Demand for reasonably priced housing revived the boom, and Pacifica was incorporated in 1957. Authors Kathleen Manning and Jerry Crow of the Pacifica Historical Society contrast vintage and modern views of this city to illustrate the progression from farms to cottages to a suburb surrounded by open space and a modern metropolis.

"Jesus Goes to Hollywood" author event Saturday, April 3rd!

Florey's Books invites you to meet Northern California author William Bramley as he discusses his book "Jesus Goes to Hollywood: The Alternative Theories About Christ".

***Saturday, April 3rd, 2pm***

Everything you never wanted to know about Christ, or were afraid to ask. Join "The Gods of Eden" author William Bramley as he surveys all of the major alternative theories about Christ, as he provides you with the primary evidence in support of each theory, along with some of the arguments against them. It will be up to you, the reader, to decide what is true.

Did Jesus survive the crucifixion and preach afterwards? What were his connections to strange mystery religions? How did hallucinogens affect Christianity? Who, or what, were the angels that were said to be in contact with Christ? Were angels misinterpreted extraterrestrials? Where did Jesus go during his "missing" years? Did Jesus sail to other places, such as England, Asia and North America? Did he have children? If so, how many? Or was he gay? What did he look like? Was Jesus black? Or was he white with red hair? Does the New Testament reveal his true teachings, or did he say something very different? Was Jesus really a saint? Was he perhaps even a madman? Even a myth? Did he exist at all?

Jesus Christ continues to spark the public imagination through books and movies that present many different views of him. Jesus Goes to Hollywood fills in the gaps with a fascinating summary of the most popular and enduring theories about Christ along with the author's own interpretations.

***

A word from the author: I wrote Jesus Goes to Hollywood because religion is a force for both good and bad that is having an enormous impact on our world right now. Humanity needs to grow up spiritually, and to do that, we need to gain a better understanding of who our religious founders really were, what they actually taught, and why. The consequences of ignorance have become too severe. I hope that Jesus Goes to Hollywood helps in the search for answers.

"Dealing With Difficult People" author event Sat. February 6th!

Florey's Books invites you to meet local author Cheryl Joseph as she discusses her book "Dealing With Difficult People - It's a Zoo Out There"

***Saturday, February 6th, 2-4pm***

Ever feel like you have been attacked by a lion, poisoned by a viper, or confronted by a mule when you haven't even left home turf? If so, "Dealing With Difficult People: It's a Zoo Out There" is the book for you! Let's face it: whether it is your boss; teacher; spouse; coworker; parent; or best friend, people can sometimes be beastly. Written by a sociologist with many years in the corporate world, as a university professor, and a lover of animals, this book explores effective communication techniques by tenderly and humorously comparing stereotypic behavior of various animals to that of challenging people. Brimming with insight, this book also contains many attractive and colorful photographs of the animals it discusses, making it as enjoyable and fun to read as it is useful in any social situation where difficult people lurk.

"Shadow of the Imago" author event, Saturday, January 23rd!

Florey's Books invites you to meet local author Gustav Tjgaard as he discusses his new book "Shadow of the Imago".

***Saturday, January 23rd, 2-4pm***

-About the book:
This book is a memoir of Simon, of an adolescent year in the Arcadian San Juan Archipelago of Puget Sound, a northwestern version of the Greek Aegean. Simon, a pubescent Odysseus, matured in this islanded environment of boats, fishermen, sailors and yachtsmen, all drawn to his father’s boatyard by their common love of the sea. Soon into the story Simon begins to appreciate the attributes of Zoë, a blond nymphet of Swedish extraction. Together they learn something of sailing and something of life. Yes, even in the primordial 1930s some teenagers were tempted by Eve’s apple, and yes, Zoë and Simon savored a bit of that pome. The carnal appetite of Simon’s father brought their fledgling love to a catastrophic denouement. The relationship deteriorated into a circumstance that resulted in Simon being exiled as a ship’s boy aboard a lumber schooner engaged in the China trade.

-About the author:
Born on Decatur Island of the San Juan Archipelago of the State of Washington. Served as a sailor, in trade with the Orient, on the last and largest Windjammer (Vigilant) to sail commercially. Was a para-trooper in Europe during WW II. After the war, he took a degree in mining at the University of Alaska's School of Mines. He later lived and worked with the Tlingets in Alaska.

"Energy Free: Homes for a Small Planet" book event, January 9th!

Florey's invites you to meet Pacifica author Ann Edminster as she discusses her new book "Energy Free:
Homes for a Small Planet".

***Saturday, January 9th, 2-4 pm***

-About the book:
Energy Free is designed to equip building professionals and homeowners alike with a toolkit for creating homes that use no more energy than they produce—this means homes that are free from the vagaries of energy-price fluctuations and that help to free society of the high political and environmental costs of fossil fuels.

Individuals and institutions have been working toward "zero-energy" homes for decades. This volume is the first record of those collective efforts, distilling their experience into a practical and comprehensive how-to guide. The author includes resource information and step-by-step guidance on how to make decisions that will yield an energy-free residential project, whether a single-family home or multifamily building, new or existing, in an urban or a rural setting. The unique needs and opportunities of each context are addressed.

Visit the book website: http://www.chelseagreen.com/index/bookstore/item/energy_free/

-About the author:
Ann Edminster, M.Arch., LEED AP, is a recognized national expert on green home design and construction. She is a principal author of the LEED for Homes Rating System and consults to builders, homeowners, developers, supply chain clients, design firms, utilities, investors, and public agencies.
