August 2017 Poetry at Florey's.

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event!

***Saturday, August 26th, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are Sy Margaret Baldwin and Sherri Rose-Walker.

From Sherri:

Dear Poetry Community,

I hope you will consider joining us for our next evening of poetry at Florey's Books, when Sy Margaret Baldwin and I will be your featured poets. You are warmly welcome to bring you own, or a favorite poet's work to read at open mic (3 minutes, please - DO time yourself; I hate interrupting people, but will do that, if necessary!). The evening begins with open mic at 7:30, followed by a break, and the featured poets. Please also bring a snack, drink or supplies (cups, plates, napkins) for the table, if you can (this is SO much appreciated).

About the featured poets:

SY MARGARET BALDWIN

Sy was born and grew up in the West Midlands of England; she now resides in Long Barn, CA. Sy is the author of "Signal Fires". She has also been a featured poet in Sonora Seasons and Stanislaus Connections publications, as well as numerous literary magazines - including Poetry Now, Tule Review, Third Wednesday, Common Ground Review, and Calyx.

"I have a love of the outdoors. In 1978 I applied for a summer job with the US Forest Service and, to my surprise, was offered a job as a firefighter on Stanislaus National Forest. That was the beginning of a long career---first as a firefighter and then as a Wildlife Technician.

Sy recalls what led her to become an author. "At the age of eleven I learned to love poetry from a teacher who introducted me to the work of the English Romantics. Later, in my twenties, I began to write poetry myself." Her ideal place to write is at home, at her desk looking out at a beautiful cedar grove and sapling black oaks.

SHERRI ROSE-WALKER

I wrote my first poem (a limerick) when I was seven, and have written ever since; letters, journals and prose, as well as poetry. My teachers have been the works of other poets. Among the most influential have been Rainer Maria Rilke, May Sarton, Rumi, Denise Levertov, William Stafford, Joy Harjo, Van Morrison, Jane Hirshfield, William Shakespeare, Linda Hogan, William Butler Yeats and Ursula Le Guin. Wide reading in mythology, philosophy, anthropology, paleo and ancient history, psychology and spirituality have also deeply influenced my work.

My own poetry is most closely concerned with the inner and symbolic life, the mysterious alchemy governing what it means to be human, and yet to reach always for what is greater and beyond. I am continuingly concerned with the seasons of growth, waning, death and rebirth, in both the world and the heart. In my poetry, I seek to explore, and somehow find words to speak of the rooms in transformation’s house of gold.

Local Forum: 'Beauty & the Eye of the Beholder', August 24th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our discussion group!

***Thursday, August 24th, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

We will be meeting to discuss the topic: Beauty and the Eye of the Beholder.

From Nico:

Good Evening Everyone!

Once again, this topic is pretty open ended. Our hustle and bustle lifestyles really limit us from hitting the pause button to appreciate the beauty in art, people, or even the environment. The funny thing about beauty, is that it's also subjective, so what's beautiful to me, may be butt ugly to you.

And that's where the Local Forum comes in. For this meeting, let's get a chance to share stories on what we find beautiful in life, and maybe in turn, find out new beautiful things we should seek out.

Questions to consider
- what's your preferred medium of art? (Music, written word, pictures)
- what's one thing that just doesn't seem that appealing to you.
- can anything really be objectively beautiful or ugly?

A Glimpse into Indonesian History through Story with Dalang Publishing.

Florey's Books welcomes Dalang Publishing to present: A Glimpse into Indonesian History through Story.

About Dalang Publishing:
Dalang Publishing is a San Mateo–based publisher that provides English-language translations of Indonesian historical and cultural novels. Founded by Lian Gouw in the fall of 2011, Dalang, the Indonesian word for “master storyteller,” now lists nine titles that take the reader back to the early years of Dutch and British colonialization, from the 1600s through WWII and the revolution in the mid-1900s, to more current events that have significant, historical consequences.
Lian joins us to discuss Dalang’s titles and general information about Indonesia.

Presentations at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. provide an overview of Dalang’s books and its most recent 2017 publication, Dasamuka, by Junaedi Setiyono.

To history buffs and travel fans alike: Don’t miss this rare opportunity to get an intimate peek at the colorful history and rich culture of Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago: 17,000 islands wrapped around the equator!

Light Indonesian refreshments served at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Florey's Book Club: 'December Boys' August 17th!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, August 17th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our August book, 'December Boys' by Joe Cliford.

About the book:

Jay Porter, the newest employee at NorthEastern Insurance in New Hampshire, is investigating an accident claim when he learns the teenager behind the wheel was arrested for minor drug possession and sentenced to a hardcore behavioral modification center. At the county courthouse, Jay meets Nicki, a young college intern, who tips him off to a possible scandal--first-time juvenile offenders being shipped to private institutions for political kickbacks. He learns that long-time family nemeses, Adam and Michael Lombardi, may have a stake in the scheme. Is Jay's mission to help these kids a legitimate crusade? Or is his thirst for revenge driven by the guilt he feels over his own junkie brother's death? These questions conspire to tear apart tranquility and drive a wedge between Jay and his wife Jenny. With help from new friend Nicki, and a couple of old friends, Jay finds himself thrust back into a past he had hoped to leave behind, putting everything--and everyone he loves--at risk in pursuit of the truth.

About the author:

From homeless junkie to successful author, Joe Clifford has dedicated his life to education and the craft of writing and helping other ex-junkies find a voice and a platform for their creative energies. He is the author of several acclaimed books, including Lamentation and December Boys in the Jay Porter series. He lives with this wife and two sons in the San Francisco Bay Area.
