March 2018 Poetry at Florey's.
Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event!
***Saturday, March 31st, 7:30-9:30pm***
The featured poets this month are Dave and Chappell Holt.
From Sherri:
Dear Friends in Poetry,
By the time we meet again, it will be spring, and our clocks adjusted! So, I'd like to invite you to come to Florey's Books for an early spring evening celebrating the creative imagination. We will welcome poets and musicians Chappell and Dave Holt who will take us in new, and resonant directions. I hope you'll consider joining us.
As always, you are invited to bring your own work to read at open mic. I ask you to limit your offering to three minutes, as a courtesy to other poets, and to Aaron Schlieve, our host, who puts in a long day in order to make his store available to us. If you are in doubt about how long it takes to read that poem or three "short" ones, time yourself. The results may surprise you!
If you can, please consider bringing a snack or drink for the refreshment table. I'm sure we can all survive a couple of hours without food or drink, but it does make our break a whole lot more enjoyable with something to sip or munch. I do want to thank all of you who consistently help out in this way; your generosity is greatly appreciated!
About the featured poets:
Chappell & Dave Holt, “The Jazzy side of Americana”
Chappell & Dave Holt are singer/songwriters who with piano, guitar and voices offer an unusual musical statement – a crossroads where jazz, blues, folk and gospel meet to create something both familiar and new, traditional and unconventional. Chappell, who began to explore merging poetry with music in songwriting, has performed extensively, written and recorded for independent films, and was an in-demand studio singer. Dave, born in Toronto of Irish/English and Ojibwe Indian ancestry, moved to California, and graduated from SF State University’s Creative Writing program (B.A. ‘93, M.A. ‘95). He’s won several poetry prizes, including a Literary/Cultural Arts award for his book Voyages to Ancestral Islands, and is included in four anthologies, most notably, Red Indian Road West: Native American Poetry from California, and Descansos: Words from the Wayside, where his poem received a Pushcart Prize nomination. He often reads and performs his poetry accompanied by Ojibwe drum or keyboard, and with Chappell on guitar and vocals.

'The Right Path' - Getting Your Affairs in Order, March 24th at Florey's!
Florey's Book Co. invites you to 'The Right Path'.
***Saturday, March 24th, 11am-12noon***
'The Right Path' - Getting Your Affairs in Order
A FREE pre-need seminar on final life arrangements.
Presented by Nina Terheyden on behalf of Olivet Memorial Park.
From Nina:
Please join me as we discuss all of the benefits of Before Need Arrangements. This isn't everyone's favorite discussion, but there are many things that need to be done when a person passes away. Prearranging for yourself or a loved one will take away the stress that many feel while trying to figure out what needs to be done after a death has occurred. There are even special arrangements for our First Responders, should one fall in the line of duty. Olivet Memorial Park offers many different solutions for your end of life needs. The presentation is about 30 minutes long and then there will be a question and answer session after.
About Nina:
Nina Terheyden is a resident of Pacifica of 15 years, with her husband and children. She has taught Sunday school for a year at Good Shepherd Church, was an art volunteer at Cabrillo School while her children attended school there and has volunteered for numerous other activities in the community. She is currently a member of Pacifica's Chamber of Commerce and is looking forward to more opportunities to serve our community.

Florey's Book Club: 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' March 15th!
Florey's welcomes you to our book club!
***Thursday, March 15th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***
Come by for a chat about our February book, 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' by John Fowles.
About the book:
The scene is the village of Lyme Regis on Dorset's Lyme Bay..."the largest bite from the underside of England's out-stretched southwestern leg." The major characters in the love-intrigue triangle are Charles Smithson, 32, a gentleman of independent means & vaguely scientific bent; his fiancée, Ernestina Freeman, a pretty heiress daughter of a wealthy & pompous dry goods merchant; & Sarah Woodruff, mysterious & fascinating...deserted after a brief affair with a French naval officer a short time before the story begins. Obsessed with an irresistible fascination for the enigmatic Sarah, Charles is hurtled by a moment of consummated lust to the brink of the existential void. Duty dictates that his engagement to Tina must be broken as he goes forth once again to seek the woman who has captured his Victorian soul & gentleman's heart.
About the author:
John Fowles (1926-2005) was educated at Oxford and subsequently lectured in English at universities in Greece and the UK. The success of his first novel, The Collector, published in 1963, allowed him to devote all his time to writing. His books include the internationally acclaimed and bestselling novels The Magus, The French Lieutenant's Woman, and Daniel Martin. Fowles spent the last decades of his life on the southern coast of England in the small harbor town of Lyme Regis.
