Pacifica Book Club: 'Y: The Last Man', June 28th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Tuesday, June 28th, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

Come by for a chat about our June book, 'Y: The Last Man' by Brian K. Vaughn & Pia Guerra.

Y: THE LAST MAN, winner of three Eisner Awards and one of the most critically acclaimed, best-selling comic books series of the last decade, is that rare example of a page-turner that is at once humorous, socially relevant and endlessly surprising. Written by Brian K. Vaughan (Lost, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD, EX MACHINA) and with art by Pia Guerra, this is the saga of Yorick Brown—the only human survivor of a planet-wide plague that instantly kills every mammal possessing a Y chromosome. Accompanied by a mysterious government agent, a brilliant young geneticist and his pet monkey, Ampersand, Yorick travels the world in search of his lost love and the answer to why he's the last man on earth.

June 2016 Poetry at Florey's!

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event.

***Saturday, June 25th, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are: Richard Loranger and Ken Saffran. The featured poets will be followed by an open mic period. Open mic sign-up is first come, first served. This event is open to the public and free of charge. You are welcome to bring a snack or beverage to share.

From Sherri, the host:

" I invite you to join me, Aaron and our two fine featured poets, Richard Loranger and Ken Saffran, as they regale us with their poetic vision. Please bring a snack or drink to share, if you're able to, and some work of your own or a favorite poet's to add in your voice at open mic. It promises to be a fine and festive evening.

It is also Bob's birthday (he would have been 70), and I'm planning to read some of the poems he wrote in his early life. If you'd care to read something for him at open mic, it would be very welcome. Since he was my co-creator for this poetry series, and did so much to make our evenings welcoming, warm and smooth-running, it feels appropriate to salute him at this reading."

About the featured readers:

Richard Loranger is a writer, performer, visual artist, and all around squeaky wheel, currently residing in Oakland , CA . His new book of flash prose, Sudden Windows (Zeitgeist Press, 2016), has been enthusiastically received. He is also the author of the Poems for Teeth, The Orange Book, and nine chapbooks. Other recent work can be found in Oakland Review #2, Overthrowing Capitalism vol. 2 (Revolutionary Poets Brigade), and the new anthology The Careless Embrace of the Boneshaker (great weather for MEDIA). You can find more about his work and scandals at www.richardloranger.com.

Ken Saffran has poems published in Ambush, Amsterdam Quarterly, Before Passing (Great Weather for Media) and SF Peace And Hope. He lives in San Francisco because he can't afford it.

"Crossing the Lines" Book Event with Author Tony Press, June 25th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Tony Press as he discusses his new collection of short stories, "Crossing the Lines".

***Saturday, June 25th, 1:00-3:00pm***

About the Book:

"Gentle Reader, welcome to the tender-hearted stories of Tony Press. In Crossing the Lines, hippies, poets, wanderers and thieves steal our hearts, not to break them, but to expand their beating chambers. Tony Press writes with care and precision about the quiet moments that swiftly and un-expectantly recalibrate our wavering lives. The strengths of these stories rest in their good humor and close attention to how we fall in love and how that love transports us into the dark and thorny depths of our own wilderness. Tony Press is the perfect guide for these unforgettable adventures." - Amber Dermont, The Starboard Sea and Damage Control

About the Author:

Tony Acarasiddhi Press lives near San Francisco and tries to pay attention. Sometimes he does. During a period of meditation on a retreat in 2003 he could barely sit still because a story was spilling into his consciousness. At the final bell he raced outside and wrote it down as fast as he could. He’s been writing ever since, primarily short stories, but also poems and essays. Since 2004 his efforts have appeared online and in print close to 100 times, including journals from at least five different countries. In 2014, Boston Literary Magazine nominated one of his stories for the Pushcart Prize. A few years earlier, JMWW had nominated another story for the Million Writers Award. He continues to follow a Buddhist path (hence the name Acarasiddhi), and struggles to sit still even without the intrusion of a story. His personal mantra is “keep walking” and he will do that as long as he can.

We hope to see you!

Pacifica Book Club: 'The Autobiography of Malcolm X', May 31st at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Tuesday, May 31st, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

Come by for a chat about our May book, 'The Autobiography of Malcolm X' by Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley.

With its first great victory in the landmark Supreme Court decision "Brown v. Board of Education "in 1954, the civil rights movement gained the powerful momentum it needed to sweep forward into its crucial decade, the 1960s. As voices of protest and change rose above the din of history and false promises, one voice sounded more urgently, more passionately, than the rest. Malcolm X once called the most dangerous man in America challenged the world to listen and learn the truth as he experienced it. And his enduring message is as relevant today as when he first delivered it.
In the searing pages of this classic autobiography, originally published in 1964, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and anti-integrationist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Black Muslim movement to veteran writer and journalist Alex Haley . In a unique collaboration, Haley worked with Malcolm X for nearly two years, interviewing, listening to, and understanding the most controversial leader of his time.

Lost in Venice is the second of the series “The Adventures of Giulia” and it talks about Giulia, who goes to Venice for Carnival to visit her cousin Isabella. Luckily Giulia’s magical unicorn Sparkle will always be there to help her when Giulia’s sense of adventures goes overboard. In Venice, Giulia will visit many great places like Rialto, Murano, the famous Peggy Guggenheim Collection and more. She will discover amazing things hidden in plain sight and get lost in the beautiful city. Florey's welcomes you to our discussion group!

***Wednesday, May 25th, 7:30pm-9pm***

From the host, Amanda:

There's a ton going on these days worth talking about and It'd be great to dive back in. I know it's shorter notice than usual, and we didn't get to collectively decide on a topic but I think this is one we can all easily jump into. I'd like to discuss what's going on with the primaries. Let's talk about the issues surrounding it. What has it taken for the most controversial primary candidate ever to rise to popularity? Another interesting thing I heard was in West Virginia, swing voters show that if Bernie does not win the primaries, they would vote for Trump. I have my theories on this, but let's talk about that.
What would happen if Trump becomes president? What would happen if Hilary or Bernie became president?

There's a lot to go off of on here. Share anything interesting about this topic with the group before the meeting and I'll see you there!

"That is the Question" Shakespeare Boardgame Event with Game Designer John Ahlbach, May 7th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local game creator John Ahlbach, and we invite you to join in and play his board game: "That is the Question: A Game of Shakespeare Knowledge" in celebration of the birthday of William Shakespeare.

***Saturday, May 7th, 7pm***

About the game:

'That is the Question' is a fun journey through all things Shakespeare.

The game's 500 questions come with a multiple-choice option that players with less experience can use to level the playing field against those with more expertise. The questions cover the plots, language and characters of major and minor plays. They cover Shakespeare on stage and in film in our own time.

Knowledge and educated guessing do not always win in That is the Question. Luck must be with you, too, as you must land on the right spaces to win the two of each type of Character Card needed for victory.

So, when Juliet asks, "What satisfaction canst thou have tonight?", the answer is, play That is the Question with your friends or family!

About the author/creator:

John Ahlbach is a teacher at Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco. He wrote the 500 questions used in That is the Question: A Game of Shakespeare Knowledge. The game board and cards were designed by Mona Toft, a graphic artist in St. Paul , MN. Much of the profits from this game will go to Friends: The National Association of Young People Who Stutter, of which John is a co-founder.

April 2016 Poetry at Florey's!

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event.

***Saturday, April 30th, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are: Sandra Anfang, Cordelia Leoncio, and Sherri Rose-Walker. The featured poets will be followed by an open mic period. Open mic sign-up is first come, first served. This event is open to the public and free of charge. You are welcome to bring a snack or beverage to share.

From the host, Sherri:

Dear Friends in Poetry,

Today, William Shakespeare's birthday (as near as can be figured), I want to invite you to join us at Florey's Books next Saturday, to celebrate the Bard, and bring down the curtain on National Poetry Month. I hope you've all been doing your part; reading, reciting and writing poetry whenever and wherever possible, and sharing the lovely lilt of language with everyone you know.

For this next poetic evening, Sandra Anfang, Cordelia Leoncio and I will bring touches of sweet harmony to your ears, and I hope you'll bring your own notes of music for open mic (3 minutes, please! I WILL remember to bring the hook this time!). Bring poems inspired by or for William Shakespeare, poems about poems and writing poems, or anything you choose. Please also bring, if you can, some snacks or drinks to grace the table so we can eat and drink together.

Pacifica Book Club: 'Hard Rain Falling', April 26th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Tuesday, April 26th, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

Come by for a chat about our April book, 'Hard Rain Falling' by Don Carpenter.

Don Carpenter’s Hard Rain Falling is a tough-as-nails account of being down and out, but never down for good—a Dostoyevskian tale of crime, punishment, and the pursuit of an ever-elusive redemption. The novel follows the adventures of Jack Levitt, an orphaned teenager living off his wits in the fleabag hotels and seedy pool halls of Portland, Oregon. Jack befriends Billy Lancing, a young black runaway and pool hustler extraordinaire. A heist gone wrong gets Jack sent to reform school, from which he emerges embittered by abuse and solitary confinement. In the meantime Billy has joined the middle class—married, fathered a son, acquired a business and a mistress. But neither Jack nor Billy can escape their troubled pasts, and they will meet again in San Quentin before their strange double drama comes to a violent and revelatory end.

Local Forum: 'The Power of Money', March 30th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our discussion group!

***Wednesday, March 30th, 7:30pm-9pm***

From the host, Amanda:

Our topic this month is 'The Power of Money', both the positive and negative effects, no one can deny that money does have the power to do big things. Philanthropy, politics, big business, changing the world. Challenge yourself here. If you were suddenly given $1 billion dollars... what would you realistically do with it? Do some research, maybe come up with a detailed plan. What, if anything, would you give away? What, if anything, would you keep?

Does money enable happiness, freedom, power or something else? Does money equal power, and does power equal corruption in every case?

Share your books, articles, movies, talks or whatever, on the topic with the group and I'll see you there on March 30th, at 7:30pm at Florey's to discuss!!

Pacifica Book Club: 'The Lowland', March 29th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Tuesday, March 29th, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

Come by for a chat about our February book, 'The Lowland' by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Two brothers bound by tragedy; a fiercely brilliant woman haunted by her past; a country torn by revolution: the Pulitzer Prize winner and #1 New York Times best-selling author gives us a powerful new novel—set in both India and America—that explores the price of idealism and a love that can last long past death.

Growing up in Calcutta, born just fifteen months apart, Subhash and Udayan Mitra are inseparable brothers, one often mistaken for the other.

But they are also opposites, with gravely different futures ahead of them. It is the 1960s, and Udayan—charismatic and impulsive—finds himself drawn to the Naxalite movement, a rebellion waged to eradicate inequity and poverty: he will give everything, risk all, for what he believes.

Suspenseful, sweeping, piercingly intimate, The Lowland expands the range of one of our most dazzling storytellers, seamlessly interweaving the historical and the personal across generations and geographies. This masterly novel of fate and will, exile and return, is a tour de force and an instant classic.

Local Forum: 'The Pursuit of Happiness', February 24th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our discussion group!

***Wednesday, February 24th, 7:30pm-9pm***

From the host, Amanda:

First off, I'd like to happily announce that I've FINALLY decided on a better group name than Culture Club. Honestly, since that popped into my head a year ago I didn't like it at all but I had no idea what else to call it. Eureka! I've got it! Henceforth I'll be referring to our discussion group as "Local Forum" since it just makes way more sense. Let me know if you like it or not.

February's topic is one I'm pretty excited about since it's more abstract than any previous topics we've had. We'll be discussing The Pursuit of Happiness. Questions like... how much happiness is a person entitled to? Why are some 'pursuits of happiness' more socially acceptable than others and is that fair (drugs vs. health)? Do you agree with the inclusion of this as an American right? How does this affect our culture? Can money buy happiness? What is the difference between contentment and happiness?

Pacifica Book Club: 'The Martian', February 23rd at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Tuesday, February 23rd, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

Come by for a chat about our February book, 'The Martian' by Andy Weir.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

"Not If I See You First" Book Event with Author Eric Lindstrom, January 23rd at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes Pacifica author Eric Lindstrom as he discusses his new book, "Not If I See You First".

***Saturday, January 23rd, 2pm-4pm***

About the Book:

The Rules:

Don't deceive me. Ever. Especially using my blindness. Especially in public.

Don't help me unless I ask. Otherwise you're just getting in my way or bothering me.

Don't be weird. Seriously, other than having my eyes closed all the time, I'm just like you only smarter.

Parker Grant doesn't need 20/20 vision to see right through you. That's why she created the Rules: Don't treat her any differently just because she's blind, and never take advantage. There will be no second chances. Just ask Scott Kilpatrick, the boy who broke her heart.

When Scott suddenly reappears in her life after being gone for years, Parker knows there's only one way to react-shun him so hard it hurts. She has enough on her mind already, like trying out for the track team (that's right, her eyes don't work but her legs still do), doling out tough-love advice to her painfully naive classmates, and giving herself gold stars for every day she hasn't cried since her dad's death three months ago. But avoiding her past quickly proves impossible, and the more Parker learns about what really happened--both with Scott, and her dad--the more she starts to question if things are always as they seem. Maybe, just maybe, some Rules are meant to be broken.

About the Author:

Eric Lindstrom is a BAFTA and WGA-nominated veteran of the interactive entertainment industry. 'Not If I See You First' is his debut novel. He has also raised children, which led to becoming first a school volunteer, then a substitute teacher, then a part time kindergarten teacher, then getting a credential to teach elementary school, and most importantly the discovery that Young Adult books are awesome. It’s pretty much all he ever reads, and now writes, in his house near the beach on the west coast, with his wife and, yes, cats.
