2020 Year End Plans at Florey's.

Hello everyone, I know it has been a while since there has been an update. First I want to thank everyone for all the support and orders during the holiday season. December has been quite busy here filling orders, direct-to-home shipments, and curbside pick ups. It has been a trying time for all of us in different ways, so I am truly grateful for all of your support, business, and kindness.

Florey's will be closed January 1st and 2nd, 2021. I want to take a couple days off, to rest and recharge.

We will be open again Sunday, January 3rd. I'll be here at the shop to handle your orders during regular hours, 10am until 6pm every day. Please call or email if you have questions or orders in mind.

August 2020 Updates & Two-Day Staycation

Hello everyone. Your support during the current virus situation has been more than I could have imagined. I am eternally grateful to everyone who has ordered books, called, or otherwise gotten in touch to support the shop. Without you, Florey's would not still be around. So again, thank you all very much.

Since the Covid infections and deaths are only increasing instead of tapering off, I am going to stick with the curbside or direct-to-home ordering methods for now. I really do apologize for any inconvenience this causes any potential customer. I am just being very cautious with the current situation. I cannot afford to get sick. I also much prefer having people in the store, but with the way this virus is going, I just don't feel safe doing so yet. I do hope you will understand.

June 2020 - Curbside Pick Up & Updates

Hello everyone, once again I want to thank you all for your support and understanding during this situation we are all in. You all have been so amazing. I want to clarify some details of our operation for the month of June.

1. Beginning June 1st, I will be at the store 10am until 6pm every day. During the previous couple months, I had been leaving a bit earlier, but I feel I should return to normal hours now to help facilitate the next point.

2. Effective immediately, we will offer curbside pick up for orders. Direct-to-home orders are also still available. But be aware that the curbside pick up option we result in the books arriving faster and there is no shipping charge on pick ups, of course.

3. Despite the advice of San Mateo county that bookstores may reopen to in-store shopping (with some restrictions), out of an abundance of caution I have decided to remain closed to customers in-store for the time being. I certainly understand if people are disappointed. I want people back in the shop too. But this is a one-person business, and thus I cannot afford to get sick.

If anything changes, I will post an update. But for now, curbside pick up and direct-to-home orders are still going on.

May 2020, Direct-to-Home Ordering with Florey's Books.

Hello everyone, I would like to thank you all for the overwhelming support you have given me and Florey's Books during the current shelter-in-place situation we are all in. I really can't say enough how much it has meant to me to have so many generous people order from the store, or even just call or email to see how everything is going. My sincerest gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to you all.

Most people have been satisfied with the direct-to-home book ordering that my primary supplier Ingram Book Distribution has helped us out with. The delivery times *are* frequently longer than any of us would like. This is largely due to Ingram being swamped with the direct-to-home orders, while simultaneously working with greatly reduced staff at their warehouse. In addition they are wiping things down periodically and keeping everyone socially-distanced. I apologize for any delay in the arrival of your books in advance. Delivery times have ranged from just a couple days to about 10 days.

Our direct-to-home book ordering program will continue for the month of May at the very least. Since the store is closed to in-person shopping, and it is honestly a bit depressing to sit in an empty store all day, I am not at the store our full usual hours every day. Currently, I am coming in every day to answer emails, phone messages, water the plants, etc. That said, I come in at 10am and stay until usually 4pm. So please bear with me if I am not here in the later afternoon. Please feel free to leave a message or call the following day.

April 2020 at Florey's, direct-to-home ordering.

First of all, I want to thank everyone who has called, emailed, or ordered from us during the current situation. The support has been very generous and appreciated. I am feeling more optimistic about the future of the store. Together we can make it through this.

Since it appears that we will still not be open for regular shopping for some time to come, due to the shelter-in-place order, I wanted to update everyone on what we plan to do at Florey's and direct-to-home ordering.

Florey's is very important to me, and I am going to try make it through the current situation, like many other small businesses. Obviously, we will have none of our regular or special events at the store for the time being. I want to be back to regular shop business just like everyone else, but we all have to do our part to stay healthy.

As for ordering books from Florey's during the lockdown, we have begun offering a direct-to-home shipping program (details below). I have heard from several customers that are disappointed by the (so far) slow delivery of these orders. I truly apologize. My book wholesaler that offered this, Ingram Book Distributors, has been swamped with these individual orders. They and I are working out ways to try and get any future direct-to-home shipments to you in a more timely manner. Again, my sincerest apologies for all those who feel let down by Florey's in this situation. We are working to improve this, and ask for your patience.

How you can still shop at Florey's during shelter-in-place

I have had a lot of customers ask how they could help support Florey's or even order books or gift certificates from us during the current shelter-in-place order. We have just worked out a method with our primary wholesale supplier Ingram Content. They refer to it as direct-to-home. In effect, you order from Florey's and the book is sent from my supplier directly to your home.

While we are not permitted to be open for regular shopping during this time, you can still place an order with us via phone or email. I ask that you DO NOT include any payment info in your email or phone messages in the interest of data security.

I will be coming by the store once or twice a day to check phone messages, and will check email throughout the day as well.

Here are the steps required:

2. I will get back to you with availability, and to work out payment and shipping address.

3. The order will be placed, and should be to your house in couple days' time.

John Edwards has dual degrees in English and psychology and a masters in professional writing from Carnegie Mellon University. As a writer and consultant, John works with companies ranging from United Airlines to Warner Bros., has published children's books for Walt Disney, and produced episodes of Tom & Jerry. A Bay Area resident, John dedicates time to local schools as a volunteer and guest speaker. His concern for education has led him to spearhead special projects and talk to kids around the world as a Microsoft Educator Community Speaker.

Come by for a chat about our January book, 'Just Kids' by Patti Smith.

About the book:

It was the summer Coltrane died, the summer of love and riots, and the summer when a chance encounter in Brooklyn led two young people on a path of art, devotion, and initiation.

Patti Smith would evolve as a poet and performer, and Robert Mapplethorpe would direct his highly provocative style toward photography. Bound in innocence and enthusiasm, they traversed the city from Coney Island to Forty-Second Street, and eventually to the celebrated round table of Max's Kansas City, where the Andy Warhol contingent held court. In 1969, the pair set up camp at the Hotel Chelsea and soon entered a community of the famous and infamous, the influential artists of the day and the colorful fringe. It was a time of heightened awareness, when the worlds of poetry, rock and roll, art, and sexual politics were colliding and exploding. In this milieu, two kids made a pact to take care of each other. Scrappy, romantic, committed to create, and fueled by their mutual dreams and drives, they would prod and provide for one another during the hungry years.

Just Kids begins as a love story and ends as an elegy. It serves as a salute to New York City during the late sixties and seventies and to its rich and poor, its hustlers and hellions. A true fable, it is a portrait of two young artists' ascent, a prelude to fame.

About the author:

Patti Smith is a writer, performer, and visual artist. She gained recognition in the 1970s for her revolutionary merging of poetry and rock and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Her seminal album Horses, bearing Robert Mapplethorpe's renowned photograph, has been hailed as one of the top one hundred albums of all time. Her books include M Train, Witt, Babel, Woolgathering, The Coral Sea, and Auguries of Innocence.

Lorna will discuss energy exercises from a recent Energy Medicine class as taught by Donna Eden and Prune Harris. She will cover Young Living’s current and newly released products, as they celebrate 25 years young.

About the host:

Lorna Rodriguez-Wong is a seeker of a healthy lifestyle that is effective. She will venture to address various modalities for the mind, body and soul. Since each and every one of us are uniquely different, her approach is to open the discussion on what alternatives are available. Her recent studies have included Energy Medicine with Donna Eden and Prune Harris, BodyTalk with MaryAnn Gutoff and Dreambuilder with Lauren Broilier. She has been a Young Living member since 2013. She also has a desire to introduce others to a healthier lifestyle by incorporating the use of essential oils into their daily life.
