"Everyday Herbs from My Mother's Kitchen Cabinet" Workshop at Florey's Dec. 3rd!

Florey's welcomes you to a casual workshop where the wisdom of everyday herbs is passed from a mother to the next generation.

***Saturday, December 3rd, 1:30 to 2:30pm***

+++A class tuition of $39 per person is requested by the host, Jie Feng.+++
(10% of class proceeds will be donated to the Antolino Family Wellness Center.)

For more about the Wellness Center, please see their site:
http://www.domesticharmony.net/default.html

About the workshop:

Every time I visit my mother, she makes me soup. Soup to regulate my bladder and liver functions. Soup to balance the heat in my body when I eat too much fried-food. Soup to help me feel energetic and look beautiful. If only she has a soup recipe to make me rich! My mother has a wealth of knowledge about everyday herbs that she uses in her cooking that my generation knows nothing about. She learned it from the generation before her and from reading Chinese herb books. Instead of letting this knowledge go extinct, she agreed to share this knowledge others!

Come join us for a show-and-tell of Everyday Herbs from My Mother’s Kitchen Cabinet! My mother is the teacher and I will be the translator.

+++To sign up, please email me at jiefeng@gmail.com or call me at (650) 438-3979. This will help me determine how many copies of the workbook to print. Thanks!+++

"The Gang That Shot Up Hollywood" Book Signing November 12th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local Pacifica author John Stanley as he discusses his new book, "The Gang That Shot Up Hollywood"

***Saturday, November 12th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

John Stanley, 33-year veteran entertainment writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, stalks the environs of Hollywood and San Francisco to profile male & female stars of yesteryear who blasted their way through movies and TV series with high-powered handguns, curvaceous, slinky bodies and other weapons of excessive destruction, all for decent box office. Savor four classic Clint Eastwood encounters: Two “Dirty Harry” moments with actor Clint and two Iwo Jima moments with director Clint. Stanley presents exclusive material and photos about Iwo surrounding the raising of the first small flag, and introduces you to fellow Chronicle employee Joe Rosenthal, who took the famous photo of the second flag-raising. Can hard-hitting martial arts star Chuck Norris survive three showdowns with Stanley? James Stewart survived two Stanley encounters: one about his hard-boiled Westerns, the other about his Hitchcock classics. Meet Robert and John Mitchum, ornery fighting brothers whom Stanley knew intimately, and learn the full truth behind Robert’s 1948 arrest for marijuana use, never before revealed. Karl Malden faces Stanley in five showdowns on the streets of San Francisco. Sink into the world of film noir with “Czar of Noir” Eddie Muller and a warm swarm of femme fatales such as Jane Russell, Ida Lupino, Lauren Bacall, Barbara Stanwyck, Anne Francis, Evelyn Keyes, Marie Windsor, Carroll Baker and other undulating ladies, “the intellectual half.” It’s another noir moment on the set of Samuel Fuller’s “Naked Kiss” when Stanley overhears a conversation that leads to the downfall of the popular cult director, whom Stanley profiles in depth from personal encounters. Then there’s a grim Fisherman’s Wharf showdown with “Virginian” star James Drury that still has Stanley spinning. Plus countless other moments with Hollywood icons, told with 740 photographs and 17 show biz caricatures. Text and imagery material that will shake up any motion picture lover.

About the author:

John Stanley, graduate of San Francisco State College, spent 33 years covering the world of movies and TV for the San Francisco Chronicle’s Sunday “Pink” section. He is also the author of the six-edition “Creature Features Movie Guide” series, having hosted “Creature Features” in the San Francisco-Bay Area from 1979-1984. His autobiography, “I Was a TV Horror Host,” was distributed by Bookmasters in 2007-2008. He has made an estimated 2,000 crossword puzzles for magazines and since 1995 has made thousands of appearances teaching entertainment courses for Bay Area Classic Learning, at one time the most heavily attended Elderhostel in America. His novels include “World War III” (Avon 1976) and “Bogart 48" (Dell 1980). His newest effort, “The Gang That Shot Up Hollywood,” is the first in a trilogy based on his newspaper experiences covering Hollywood and the entertainment world. Other books to come will cover comedy, Westerns and horror/sci-fi.

"Night Flight" book signing October 27th at Florey's!

Florey's Book Co. welcomes Pacifica author Alessa Adamo as she signs her new novel "Night Flight".

***Thursday, October 27th, 6-8pm***

About the Book:

Melissa Adams is a middle-age woman living a typical married life in Southern California. But as her marriage unravels she turns to Kathy Murray, the aircraft mechanic she is attracted to despite resisting her attractions to women. Melissa tries to make a new life in San Francisco with Kathy but she is haunted by the rejection of her only daughter and the guilt of giving in to her desires of being with Kathy in a same-sex relationship. Ultimately she believes vindication comes by winning her daughter's love back.

Melissa's obsessive efforts to repair the relationship between her and her daughter finally begin to come together when they agree to meet in the far-off vacation resort of Bangkok. But this supposed vacation only serves to put a bizarre chain of events in motion--events that involve all three of them and start innocently enough, but quickly spiral out of control. It is a trip that can only be taken on the Night Flight. Welcome aboard.

About the Author:

Alessa is in her late 50’s and lives on the coast in a small apartment in the San Francisco Bay Area. She was raised in Rochester, New York and came out west in 1969, settling in California in 1972. She enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in her teens (don’t ask), and was a B-52 crew chief and a C-141 flight engineer over 20 years on active duty and the reserves. She also had a career in selling real estate where she managed a realty office for nearly 20 years. She finally got a BA degree from San Francisco State University in 2006 in English and Creative Writing (going back to school was not easy). Today, Alessa is employed at a small San Francisco nonprofit where she teaches disaster preparedness. And of course, she writes.

"In Search of Fertility" book signing October 22nd at Florey's!

Florey's Book Co. welcomes local photographer Tanya Lin Jaffe as she signs copies of her new photography collection, "In Search of Fertility".

***Saturday, October 22nd, 4-6pm***

Tanya Lin Jaffe is a Pacifica resident and Sanchez Art Center Studio Artist.

About the book:

In Search of Fertility is a visual roadmap of the places I’ve been on the journey to motherhood. I never wanted children. Ever. Even as a little girl I refused to play with dolls. Three years ago that changed. A little too late. So far.

Using eggs, the essence of fertility, and other props as my subjects, I photograph their stories. Boiling, burning, rotting, playing, dancing and singing. Seeking to give birth to something that will last beyond them. Like a mad scientist seeking a reaction, I set into motion events and photograph the scene and ensuing action as it unfolds, acting as both instigator and scribe.

"IndiAsia and the Dragon" booksigning to Benefit Books For Asia!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Jean Bartlett as she signs her children's book "IndiAsia and the Dragon" to benefit the Books For Asia program.

***Saturday, October 15th, 2-5pm***

The 501(c)(3) organization Books for Asia , has decided they want 1200 copies of Jean Bartlett's book "IndiAsia and the Dragon." Books for Asia delivers books like "Peter Rabbit" and "Goodnight Moon" to children who have never had their own book, in 18 countries throughout Asia . Normally, books are donated to Books for Asia through such organizations or Foundations as Barnes & Noble or the Pearson Foundation. However, Jean’s book, privately published, is not available through those channels. (This remaining book stock, still in original packaging, is housed by Jean.)

So on Saturday, October 15, from 2 p.m to 5 p.m., Jean will be at Florey's Books in Pacifica, and the general public is being asked both to spread the word, and to purchase copies of "IndiAsia and the Dragon", which will be donated to Books for Asia . The result, a child in Asia receives a book about a beautiful dragon who befriends a young girl and both their lives are changed, in a positive way, forever. (The book, which received a Mentoring Award from Big Brothers Big Sisters of the San Francisco Bay Area, is the first and only recipient of any award from BBBS.) Other benefits of buying a book, the buyer receives a tax write-off and each book purchased gives a helping boost to Florey's Books at 2120 Palmetto, Pacifica as well as to one of your favorite starving writers (!!). Spread the word!

For more on Jean and her book, please visit her site:

About Books For Asia:

For more than fifty years, Books for Asia has been one of The Asia Foundation's best-known and most beloved programs. We have sent over 45 million books, software programs, and other education material to a wide range of learning institutions since 1954. Our donations help enhance English-language skills, sharpen vocational and research skills, build knowledge in the business, legal, and science professions, and infuse children with an early love of reading that is critical to literacy.

"Pescadero Creek" author event July 16th at Florey's!

Florey's Book Co. welcomes author Victoria Williams-Fisher as she discusses her new novel, "Pescadero Creek".

***Saturday, July 16th 2-4pm***

About the book:

Pescadero Creek, near Pacifica, California is the location of a
watery grave for beautiful young women who have been raped and
strangled to death, and not necessarily in that order. When the
bodies of these young women begin surfacing in Pescadero
Creek, Special Agent Rob McAllister, the Melvin Purvis of his day,
and Dr. Morgan Warren, a young inexperienced Medical Examiner
are thrown together to bring the killer of the five–year murder spree
to justice. However, while working closely together, they fall deeply in
love and unbeknownst to them become targets of the killer
themselves.

In a town that is already laden with scandal, keeping their romance a
secret proves to be just as much of a challenge as cracking the
case. As Rob and Morgan strive to find the killer, she proves to be as
valuable to him as his lover as she is in solving the crime. Both are
faced with the inevitable, what happens to their relationship when
the case is solved?

About the author:

Victoria Williams-Fisher is a new novelist now living in Tennessee.
She was inspired to set her story in Pacifica after having lived here
for a time in the 1990s. "Pescadero Creek" is her first novel which
will soon be followed by "Undercover" and a third in the series, "Remembering".

"Sailor on Ice: Tom Crean" Book event June 26th at Florey's!

Florey's Book Co. welcomes local author David Hirzel as he discusses his new book, "Sailor on Ice: Tom Crean: with Scott in the Antarctic 1910-1913"

***Sunday, June 26th, 4pm***

About the book:

There are more famous names than Tom Crean’s from the “heroic age” of Antarctic exploration, but there are few stories as compelling as his. Tom Crean: Sailor on Ice tells the story of a common man in uncommon circumstances, who met every challenge as it came with steadfast purpose. If he knew fear, he never showed it. Sailor on Ice goes with him from England to the Antarctic plateau, and back. We share his trials as they happen—the thrill of discovery, the danger of the sea-ice, the terror of extreme isolation, the tragedy of the deaths of his closest friends.Who really are the heroes of Antarctic exploration? The familiar names--Scott, Shackleton, Amundsen--belong to those who claimed to lead. But those who lead are nothing without those who come a few steps behind, hauling the gear, pitching the camp, walking the long walk, steadfast, enduring. Without these men there would be no leaders. There would be no survivors, and no story to be told. Tom Crean was such a man.

About the author:

David Hirzel landed at Sky Ranch overlooking Pacifica, California at the end of 30 years of wandering that started in West Virginia, with extended stops in Florida, Virginia, Lake Tahoe and various points between. In the course of time he has published numerous poems, stories and articles, two plays and an online audiodrama at , but his true calling has always been the history of polar exploration in the “heroic” age. The fascination began with a first reading of Shackleton’s Valiant Voyage in 1961, and never ended. One result has been the book Tom Crean: Sailor on Ice, a labor of love that started in 1996 and hasn’t ended yet. Two more books are due in the series, covering Crean’s early days in Scott’s first expedition, and his triumph against all odds in Shackleton’s “Endurance” expedition. He lives at Sky Ranch with the cat Bellerophon (named for the ship of the line in Nelson’s navy), watching the whales and the Pacific sunsets.

"2065 In the Beginning" booksigning June 11th at Florey's !

Florey's Book Co. welcomes local Pacifica author Krista Markowitz as she discusses her new book "2065 In the Beginning".

***Saturday, June 11th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

More than thirty have passed since the sudden blast of sweetness and universal understanding changed everything. People all over the world have dropped the money standard to join in pods of like-minded others— where all resources are shared, borrowed or bartered and where creativity and freedom of choice are the guiding principles. And the higher capabilities- telepathy, clairvoyance, clairaudience, and the like are gradually becoming the norm.

Welcome to Art Pod in the year 2064. Follow the adventures and learning of ten-year-old Jeori as his life gradually intertwines with his telepathic and outgoing neighbor, Kayla, and fifteen-year-olds Cleo and Kadrun. It is to the loner Kadrun— dubbed Mr. Black by his pod mates- that the forces of darkness first come, threatening his life and sanity. As threads of age-old fears begin to insidiously spread throughout the world, it is Kad who holds the key to Earth’s future.

About the author:

"The Leadfeather Syndrome" author event May 21st at Florey's!

Florey's Book Co. welcomes local Pacifica author Arnold D. Gardner as he discusses his new novel "The Leadfeather Syndrome"

***Saturday, May 21st, 2-4pm***

About the book:

Michael Greer’s career as a journeyman Private Investigator takes on a promising cushy outlook when his assignment takes him to Eastern Long Island’s North Fork, the resort and sporting playground where he’s slated to delve into the case of a local auto dealer who’s been officially reported missing along with an imposing chunk of pledged bonding company funds. Almost at once, Greer’s undertaking takes on an awesome dimension when the missing dealer’s terrified girlfriend turns out to be an incomparable beauty who’s been directed to seek his help in uncovering possible lethal circumstances related to her boyfriend’s disappearance. P.I. Greer finds himself drawn into a nightmare of intrigue and assassination in uncovering the perpetrators in current and past murder scenes and manages his own survival by out-matching his adversaries in smarts and nerve. Greer.s romantic involvement with two beautiful women closely aligned to the story’s events almost ends in his undoing as did a like affair in the immediate post-war days of his youth. But, in love, as in the ordeals of war, he learns to live with the fateful outcome of his fortunes and his intimacy with the wisdom in Shakespeare helps him find words for it.

About the author:

The Leadfeather Syndrome is the first published work by WWII combat veteran Arnold D. Gardner, an American educator and business executive who fought throughout the Italian Campaign and afterward lived and worked in Italy. He and his Italian warbride, Diana, resided for many years among the splendid eastern towns and villages of Long Island's North Fork. Mr. Gardner's native roots go back to the scenic country areas along the northern borders of New York State.

"Sam's Castle" author event May 14th at Florey's !

Florey's Books welcomes local Pacifica author Bridget Oates as she discusses her new book, "Sam's Castle".

***Saturday, May 14th, 2-4pm***

Book Description:

With romance, elegant parties, and dashing, uniformed gentlemen, this charming castle story is almost what one might expect. But add in dramatic police raids and rumors of bodies buried in the garden, and it becomes the very unique tale of Sam's Castle. Built in 1908 as a haven for the earthquake-rattled Henry Harrison McCloskey (grandfather of former congressman Pete McCloskey), the castle served as a home, speakeasy, rum-runner signaling station, abortion clinic, and U.S. Coast Guard lookout during World War II. Despite its turbulent history, however, this castle story has a happy ending. In the care of the Sam Mazza Foundation, the magnificent estate will remain a treasured Pacifica landmark for all to enjoy.

Author Bio:

Bridget Oates is a professional writer with a passion for history. Shortly after moving to Pacifica, she became captivated by the castle and knew this fascinating story had to be told. Working closely with the Sam Mazza Foundation, the McCloskey family, the Pacifica Tribune, the Pacifica Historical Society, and countless locals, this intriguing tale now comes to life through nearly 200 historical photographs.

"Coastside Detectives: The Grand View" book event, Saturday, April 23rd!

Florey's Books welcomes author Matthew O’Malley as he discusses his book "Coastside Detectives: The Grand View".

***Saturday, April 23rd, 2-4pm***

About the book:

The story told in Coastside Detectives encompasses both the storied past of California’s “Baghdad by the Bay” and all-too-bloody headlines from the real Baghdad of today’s Iraq. Detective Mike Mason now lives in Pacifica but is drawn back to the rough streets of the city’s Tenderloin District by a new client, Laura Grandviewer, who is as beautiful as she is untrustworthy. Lies and half-truths send Mike upon a crooked path and before he can unsnarl all of the loose ends Laura has set waving in the criminal winds, a growing body count will work to unnerve this harden detective and will end in a climactic splash of blood.

In Coastside Detectives, Mike Mason, the latest in a long line of West Coast private eyes, takes stock of the state of his soul as he navigates the complexities of a criminal caper, and finds clarity for both in the fog-scrubbed sky viewed from California’s winding Highway One.

About the author:

Matthew O'Malley was born and raised in San Francisco but has been living in Pacifica for over ten years. He is also the author of a self-published collection of short stories, Tales for Sale, and has recently won multiple flash story contests that will be included in a forthcoming collaborative book an art exhibit hosted by Kenney Mencher at the Art Haus Gallery in San Francisco beginning April 8th. The art show and accompanying book is titled Renovated Reputations: Paintings and Fiction inspired by Vintage Portrait Photographs.

"Cancer on my Mind" book event, Saturday, March 19th!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Walter Kornichuk to read and discuss his book "Cancer on my Mind".

***Saturday, March 19th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

"Cancer on my Mind, by Walter Kornichuk, is atypical among non-fiction brain tumor survivor books because it is narrated by a talking tumor that I battle for my survival. Applying a cancer patient versus brain tumor (man against himself) approach to surviving a brain tumor enabled me to learn about my enemy, apply a “never give up attitude” to try to defeat it, and provide insight into what a cancer patient deals with mentally and physically. The book is unique and worthwhile because the tumor dialogue is outrageously funny, bringing humor to a life-and-death struggle that has touched the lives of many Americans."

About the author:

In 2000, Walter Kornichuk was diagnosed with a brain tumor and given a 40 percent chance to survive five years. He is happy to celebrate his tenth year of cancer-free living. He has been a volunteer for the National Brain Tumor Society-Patient and Caregiver Support Network since 2006. Walter is a Lead Transportation Security Officer for a private aviation security company at San Francisco International Airport.

Sister Patricia Ryan said that like all poets, she writes from within her unique life-world, the context from within which her poetic voice and consciousness emerge — it is not the usual combination of influences. A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, with family roots in the Pacific Northwest and a deep love for her Irish heritage — her poetry evokes, re-presents, closely observes and reflects on these particular bioregions and these are the landscapes the reader meets in her poems. Also a violinist, the chemistry major with an English minor has been a Roman Catholic Sister of Mercy for more than fifty years. As such she taught math, science, religion, and fine arts appreciation in secondary schools for many years.

***February 18th:

Jim has read poems previously at San Francisco's Bird & Beckett and in the Friday night series, "Poetry and Pizza" at Escape from New York, also in San Francisco.

Florey's Wins Renovation Project! Reception Tonight!

Florey's Books has been named the winner of Wells Fargo's small business storefront renovation contest. The bookstore, located at 2120 Palmetto Drive, now has brand new outside and inside signage, furniture, decorations and a dedicated sitting section for children to read. The improvements were made possible by Wells Fargo's storefront renovation project aimed to help local small businesses succeed.

A reception to honor Florey's Bookstore along with two other small businesses that were named runner ups will be held on Wednesday, January 26 at the bookstore from 6 to 8 p.m.

The renovation team was led by volunteers at Philanthropy by Design and George Sun, an instructor at the College of San Mateo. Sun's architectural students worked on the renovation as a class project to gain practical experience. The team had a budget of $3,000 to renovate three small local businesses including Rosa Marina Beauty Salon in San Francisco and InsMall Financial and Insurance Service in Daly City.

"Wells Fargo is proud to hold this innovative contest that mobilizes the community to work together and help our local small businesses," said Wendy Haller, Wells Fargo's Mission Coastal regional president.

Edwin Ng and Eric Young, District Managers from Wells Fargo's Mission Coastal Market served as judges. Ng added, "Through this effort, we're all doing a part in helping our local small businesses succeed."

Toni Mirosevich "The Takeaway Bin" book event! More...

Florey's Books invites you to meet local poet Toni Mirosevich as she discusses her new poetry collection: "The Takeaway Bin".

***Saturday, January 22nd, 2-4pm***

About the book:

Oblique Strategies is a card game invented in 1975, by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt. “Over one hundred worthwhile dilemmas” are printed on a pack of cards and offer a set of possibilities to apply “when a dilemma occurs in a working situation.” The Takeaway Bin borrows from that concept, presenting poems that reply to various daily dilemmas, specific or obscure.

The Takeaway Bin arises out of an ultramodern language aftermath: the fragments and shards of language we are currently left with in an age of verbal foreshortening, where Photoshop has imploded the failsafe idea that “seeing is believing,” and Wikipedia has shifted the idea of fact
into the realm of a constantly updating consortium. This melee of reference points is the Takeaway Bin's fuel, and the profound plasticity of modern reality is the engine Mirosevich
harnesses. --->LJ Moore, SF Examiner

About the author:

Toni Mirosevich is the author of a book of nonfiction stories, Pink Harvest, three collections of poetry, My Oblique Strategies, Queer Street, and The Rooms We Make Our Own.
