Notorious San Francisco - Book event with author Paul Drexler!

Florey's Books welcomes author Paul Drexler as he discusses his new book, "Notorious San Francisco: True Tales of Crime, Passion, and Murder".

***Saturday, November 23rd, 2:00pm-4:00pm***

About the book:

San Francisco, a city founded in part by criminals, was once one of the most dangerous cities in America. Its Barbary coast was called “a unique criminal district that was the scene of more viciousness and depravity, but it possessed more glamour, than any other area on the American continent.”

“Notorious” brings back the glamorous depravity and noir atmosphere that made it the premier location for murder thrillers like “The Maltese Falcon,” “Vertigo,” and “Zodiac.”

This book contains more than 20 compelling tales of serial killers, deadly women, con-men, masters of escape, and unsolved mysteries. San Franciscan criminals were as colorful as the city they inhabited. Take William Thoreson, a murderous millionaire who hid the nation’s largest private armory in his Pacific Heights mansion. Then there’s Isabella Martin, the murderous “Queen of Grudges” who tried to poison an entire town, or Ethan McNabb and Lloyd Sampsell, the “Yacht Bandits,” who used a luxurious sloop as a getaway vehicle for their dozens of bank robberies.

Most of these unusual cases are largely unknown and have never appeared in book form. Included are cases that are still mysteries today, including the mysterious tale of the Zodiac Killer, complete with a new analysis and a startling new theory on the murder.

About the author:

PAUL DREXLER has been writing about San Francisco crime since 1984. He worked for years with the late Kevin Mullen, retired Deputy Chief of the San Francisco Police Department. Paul designed and co-produced SFPD Homicide, the interactive award-winning true crime video game that has been used to teach police procedures. His column, "Notorious Crooks," appeared regularly in the Sunday San Francisco Examiner.

He has taught crime history at San Francisco State, and appeared on the Discovery ID Network show Deadly Women as an expert on San Francisco murderesses, and on Spike TV as an expert on the Zodiac Killer. Paul also directs Crooks Tours of San Francisco, which offers walking crime tours of Chinatown and the Barbary Coast. In July 2017 Paul received the Oscar Lewis Award from the San Francisco History Association for his writing on San Francisco.

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, November 21st, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our November book, 'Crossing to Safety' by Wallace Stegner.

About the book:

Called a “magnificently crafted story . . . brimming with wisdom” by Howard Frank Mosher in The Washington Post Book World, Crossing to Safety has, since its publication in 1987, established itself as one of the greatest and most cherished American novels of the twentieth century. Tracing the lives, loves, and aspirations of two couples who move between Vermont and Wisconsin, it is a work of quiet majesty, deep compassion, and powerful insight into the alchemy of friendship and marriage.

About the author:

Wallace Earle Stegner (February 18, 1909 – April 13, 1993) was an American novelist, short story writer, environmentalist, and historian, often called "The Dean of Western Writers". He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 and the U.S. National Book Award in 1977. He wrote fourteen novels, seventeen works of non-fiction, and several collections. 'Crossing to Safety' was his final published novel.

The Emancipation of Emily Rosenbloom - Book event with author Elinor Gale!

Florey's Books welcomes author Elinor Gale as she discusses her new novel, "The Emancipation of Emily Rosenbloom".

***Sunday, November 10th, 2:00pm-4:00pm***

About the book:

The Emancipation of Emily Rosenbloom is 50-something's Bridget Jones Diary. Masterfully written in the archetype of the female antihero, this debut novel unfolds with a wicked sense of humor, even when you're shouting, "Emily, don't do it!" The pages of this novel are populated with unforgettable characters--Dr. Rothman, the invisible psychiatrist; Emily's intuitive and exasperating mother in Florida; and Raspberry, the wonder dog. Highly recommended when you want to forget about the world and just laugh.

About the author:

Elinor Gale has been a writer, observer of human nature, and lover of the English language since childhood. An inveterate eavesdropper, she has woven her curiosity about human behavior into her work as writing teacher, editor, and creator of humorous yet poignant fiction and poetry. Her essays, poetry, and articles have been published in print and online. Elinor moved to the Bay Area from New England 20 years ago. She lives in San Francisco with her partner and his chubby Burmese cat.
