"Darshan" Book Event with Author Amrit Chima, Jan. 18th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Amrit Chima as she reads from and discusses her new novel "Darshan".

***Saturday, January 18th, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

In the sleepy, North Indian town of Amarpur, a young boy named Baba Singh Toor secretly murders a moneylender in a moment of blind sorrow and rage, setting events in motion that will shape the coming generations of Toors.

Hardened by a life of serial misfortune and loss, many years after the murder for which he was never caught, Baba Singh infects his son, Manmohan, with the misery and guilt he was unable to overcome. Two generations later, his grandson, Darshan, the most loyal and unassuming of the Toors, finds himself dragged to the center of conflict as the family demands that he correct past wrongs. How will a chest containing a collection of Baba Singh’s numerous life tragedies allow Darshan to free himself from the dysfunction that has amassed over three lifetimes? And will he live up to his name—meaning one who is blessed with clarity of sight—to finally bury the shame of a long-ago concealed crime?

Spanning continents and cultures, chronicling three generations of Indian men—traveling from the Punjab to Fiji to San Francisco—Darshan is the story of one family’s great capacity for forgiveness, learned after nearly a century of heartache.

An ambitious, epic debut novel that finely balances historical elements of nations struggling under Colonial regime with the tragedy of men who refuse to release their sorrow, written in keenly descriptive, fluid, and penetrating prose.

About the Author:

Amrit Chima is a former freelance travel writer with featured articles in Global Traveler Magazine and on Untapped Cities with syndication on Flavorwire. Born into a family with a history of inspiring migratory adventures, she has followed suit, traveling to over thirty countries, most notably India and Fiji, both of which are settings in her debut novel Darshan.

She cofounded the SF Literary Writers Group to provide a platform for writers to share the challenges, wonders, frustrations, and successes of constructing works of literary fiction. The group also meets regularly for a practice reading series in which members brave an audience in preparation for real-world events.

When time affords (which is not often enough), she writes carefully thought-out reviews for multi-layered, profoundly engaging novels. One such review earned her fifteen seconds of fame on the BBC World Book Club’s discussion of The Stranger by Albert Camus.

She holds an MFA from Emerson College in Boston, and after two years in Budapest, Hungary teaching English she is now back home in the Bay Area working on her next novel.

"Legendary Locals of Pacifica" Book Event with Author Chris Hunter, Jan.11th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Chris Hunter as he presents his new book "Legendary Locals of Pacifica".

***Saturday, January 11th, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

Pacifica has the nickname “Scenic Pacifica” because of its beautiful ocean vistas and lovely hillside views. Twelve miles south of San Francisco, the city of Pacifica grew rapidly, although not to the size that some had predicted. A haven for young families, Pacifica fostered strong leaders among housewives, environmental activists, and businesspeople. The strength of Pacifica, other than its natural beauty, has always been its people. The schools, service clubs, and athletic fields produced local celebrities, but the proximity to San Francisco helped forge more widely known legends. This combination of personalities helped make it possible to identify a broad spectrum of legendary locals, from a woman who was the first mayor of Pacifica to a successful comedian who earned national attention on Saturday Night Live and in the movies.

About the Author:

Chris Hunter, a former editor and publisher of the Pacifica Tribune, has chosen subjects for Legendary Locals of Pacifica who represent the fascinating personalities of the city where he lives. Hunter compiled this volume with the cooperation of the current management of the Pacifica Tribune, the Pacifica Historical Society, and other community members.
