Pacifica Culture Club! Discussion Topic: Perfection in the Media, May 27th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our culture discussion club!

***Wednesday, May 27th 7:30pm-9pm***

From Amanda, the host:

Join Culture Club! A monthly social discussion of social issues at a local independent bookstore in Pacifica. Get to know neighbors, express your opinions and learn more about topics that matter. Every month I encourage those attending to do some self-guided "research" whether that be watching relevant movies, attending events, reading books, articles or watching informative videos. It's all fair game, whatever you see fit, and then bring what you found/learned to the group to discuss.

May's Topic: Perfection in the Media. This topic nearly speaks for itself. We've all been inundated with images of perfect bodies, perfect things and perfect perfect perfect lives. How has this onslaught affected you? What responsibility lies with the media and what responsibility lies with us?

Here is this month's list of suggested materials but as always, please feel free to engage in your own study, bring materials to share about, or just your own thoughts and experiences. All are welcome, bring a guest!

"Singing With The Sirens" Book Event with Ellyn Bell, May 23rd at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes author Ellyn Roberts Bell as she discusses her new book, "Singing With The Sirens: Overcoming the Long-term Effects of Choldhood Sexual Exploitation".

***Saturday, May 23rd, 2-4pm***

About the book:

Numerous women in our culture have experienced shame, degradation, and despair as a result of having been sexually traumatized early in life. Some of these women end up in unhappy marriages or abusive relationships; some fall prey to a variety of addictions, silently or publicly; and some find themselves working in the sex industry. And for many survivors, their situations―and the situations that have brought them there―are secrets that have no voice. In Singing with the Sirens, experts Ellyn Bell and Stacey Bell address the long term complex trauma that results from the sexual abuse and exploitation of girls and young women, drawing on their personal and professional experiences to explore the link between the sexual abuse of children, issues of attachment and safety, and the commercial exploitation of young people. But this is not strictly a scholarly book or a memoir of personal experience; rather, the authors address this problem from a perspective of self-realization and transformation, taking the reader on a journey through mythological tales toward finding healing from within. Poetic, hopeful, and powerful, Singing with the Sirens is a call for wounded women everywhere to reclaim their own truth, spirit, and to sing with their authentic voice.

About the co-author:

Ellyn Bell has worked as an organizational leader with at-risk and marginalized youth and addressing violence against women and children for 20 years. Her personal experiences as a youth informed her career choices. She was most recently, the Executive Director of the SAGE Project in San Francisco, one of the first peer-led organizations in the country to work with human trafficking and commercially exploited youth and adults. She holds a Master’s Degree in Religion, with an emphasis in Theology. She also received her social work license in the State of Iowa. Ellyn is also a yoga teacher and a trained dancer. She is mother to two wonderful people who are now extraordinary young adults.

"The Tryceratops" Book Event with Author John Edwards, May 16th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes author John Edwards, as he discusses his new children's book "The Tryceratops".

***Saturday, May 16th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

From Mr. Edwards-

I wrote the book as a message for my kids. Often we encourage children to try new things, but we forget to let them know that sometimes trying new things doesn’t go as well as we’d like. Yet, that’s okay because regardless of the outcome, we always learn something from trying new things. So, thanks to the fun and vibrant illustrations of Erin Boe, I have a group of adorable Tryceratops experiencing both pleasant and not so pleasant outcomes as they try new things like rolling sushi, riding a roller coaster, and trying new food.

About the Author:

After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University with a master’s degree in professional writing, author John Edwards packed whatever would fit into
his Corolla and made the trek from Pittsburgh to Hollywood. Since that fateful decision, he’s played numerous roles from production assistant to location manager to studio executive (assistant). He’s even been a farm hand in downtown Los Angeles, writing all the while. He has written books for Walt Disney’s Princess and Planes franchises; episodes of Tom & Jerry for Warner Bros. Television Animation; and videos and books for ABCMouse.com. John is the proud father of Fletcher, Grace, and Demaris; the trio who first inspired “The Tryceratops,” but who are now way too cool to read anything below a fifth grade level. He is currently working on a fifth grade level adventure story and expects to complete it just in time for their college baccalaureate.

"A Fairytale" Event with Author Victoria Saitz, May 9th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Victoria Saitz, as she discusses her new book "A Fairytale".

***Saturday, May 9th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

What if the "happily ever after" wasn't as happy as everyone thinks?

Two boy's lives change forever after a chance visit to a fortune teller sends them tumbling into a world where fairytales are reality. They soon find the land has been taken over by an evil queen and must face tax collectors, witches, pirates, and mermaids as they follow their new friends on a quest to take back the land and bring back all the happy endings.

About the author:

Victoria Saitz was raised in Pacifica, and is currently attending Sonoma State University. She is a firm believer that someone should never have to sacrifice their imagination in order to succeed in life, and for that specific reason she has decided she never wants to grow up.
