Local Forum: 'The Beauty of Friendship', July 27th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our discussion group!

***Thursday, July 27th, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

We will be meeting to discuss the topic: The Beauty of Friendship.

From Nico:

Good Evening Everyone!

I'm back from my trip to the Netherlands. The place was inspiring; so much so, that it inspired me to organize a solid topic for our upcoming discussion.

Perhaps the only stain on my trip overseas, was an big argument I had with one of my friends. He's been around since high school, but the recent spat has really forced me to evaluate my definition of a friend and what it means to be someone else friend.

They say some friends come and and some friends go, but only a select few will stay around for the long haul. So it goes without saying that a lot of thought has to be put into who one invites into their close social circle. So for this month's discussion, I'd suggest thinking of the following things to help nurture conversation for this subject.

Ideas to Consider

Think of some of the close friends you've had in your lifetime? What were some traits that made them resonate with you?
Have you had any arguments with friends? What were the fallout of some of them?
There are levels to friendships; what are the circles you have for yourself, and how do you categorize people into them?
What are some lessons you have learned through close friends?

Those are just starting points, but I hope it gets your mind thinking about all the factors of friendship.

Pacifica Book Club: 'Neverhome' July 20th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, July 20th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our July book, 'Neverhome' by Laird Hunt.

About the book:

She calls herself Ash, but that's not her real name. She is a farmer's faithful wife, but she has left her husband to don the uniform of a Union soldier in the Civil War. NEVERHOME tells the harrowing story of Ash Thompson during the battle for the South. Through bloodshed and hysteria and heartbreak, she becomes a hero, a folk legend, a madwoman and a traitor to the American cause.
Laird Hunt's dazzling new novel throws a light on the adventurous women who chose to fight instead of stay behind. It is also a mystery story: why did Ash leave and her husband stay? Why can she not return? What will she have to go through to make it back home? In gorgeous prose, Hunt's rebellious young heroine fights her way through history, and back home to her husband, and finally into our hearts.

About the author:

Laird Hunt is the author of several works of fiction and a two-time finalist for the PEN Center USA Award in Fiction. A former United Nations press officer currently on the faculty of the University of Denver's creative writing program, he and his wife, the poet Eleni Sikelianos, live in Boulder, Colorado, with their daughter, Eva Grace.

When Your Life Depends On It - book event with author David Hirzel, July 9th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author David Hirzel as he discusses his book, "When Your Life Depends On It: Extreme Decision Making Lessons from the Antarctic".

***Sunday, July 9th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

When Your Life Depends on It is designed to be a thrilling read.

It is an adventure book that looks at the challenging situations faced by early explorers like Scott, Shackleton, Amundsen and Mawson while they were attempting to conquer the great, icy, then-unknown, Antarctic world.

But this book was written to be much more than that. By looking at the life-and-death decisions that these heroic men often had to make, there is much we can learn from them to improve our own modern day decision making--both at a personal level and at a business level.

Across six major expeditions spanning sixteen years, these explorers from the early 1900s faced extremely hazardous conditions, where sheer environment will kill you and the only communication was as far as you could shout. But what is really amazing to learn is that at times, they made bad decisions, though remarkably, very few people died.

Lessons and strategies in decision making are revealed throughout the stories, but the book is not prescriptive. The authors encourage you to think about what lessons you can take away from each story.

People have said that the book is fun to read and that it stimulated their own improved decision making while opening their eyes to an incredible period in history--the heroic age of Antarctic exploration.

About the co-author:

David Hirzel, a Californian native, has written a three-part polar biography of the Irish explorer Tom Crean, a key player in Scott’s and Shackleton’s expeditions. The final book of this series, Antarctic Voyager, was launched at the South-Polesium conference in Scotland (May 2015). Sailor on Ice: Tom Crean with Scott in the Antarctic has been optioned for a documentary due for release in 2017.
