Pacifica Book Club: 'Station Eleven', December 29th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Tuesday, December 29th, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

Join Pacifica's Book Club! This month we'll be discussing 'Station Eleven' by Emily St. John Mandel.

Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.

Twenty years later, Kirsten moves between the settlements of the altered world with a small troupe of actors and musicians. They call themselves The Traveling Symphony, and they have dedicated themselves to keeping the remnants of art and humanity alive. But when they arrive in St. Deborah by the Water, they encounter a violent prophet who will threaten the tiny band’s existence. And as the story takes off, moving back and forth in time, and vividly depicting life before and after the pandemic, the strange twist of fate that connects them all will be revealed.

Get to know your neighbors and enjoy casual engaging conversation. Wine & light bites. All are welcome.

"Walking the World" Book Event with Author Terrence Kero, December 12th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes Pacifica author Terrence Kero as he discusses his new book, "Walking the World".

***Saturday, December 12th, 2pm-4pm***

About the Book:

The paramount story of the human race is begging to be told…

Walking the World, the first novel of Terrence Kero’s groundbreaking trilogy about human migration, tells the compelling story of prehistoric hunter-gatherers who had no crops, no domesticated animals, and no means of transportation besides their feet, people who walked and walked until they eventually populated the world. The novel opens in San Francisco in 1999, when Lisa Koskinen receives a gift from a distant relative in Finland: an odd necklace made of large canine teeth strung on a leather thong. With the help of carbon-dating and DNA analysis, Lisa and her parents gradually trace the history of the necklace and their family back to their earliest origins. Alternating between the present day and flashbacks to the bloody, dramatic first migration to Finland, Walking the World will have you living through heartbreaking struggles, intense romances, life-and-death encounters, crimes of passion, violent deaths, joyous births—all the tragedies and triumphs of the Koskinen clan from the dawn of time to the current day.

About the Author:

Terrence Kero is an electronic engineer who holds patents in computerized speech recognition and high-speed data networks. His journey from engineer to author began with an interest in tracing his Finnish-American family’s roots, a journey that eventually took him back to the earliest history of human migration. Walking the World is based on more than ten years of his research in anthropology and human genetics, and on his own travels along many of the rivers, mountain ranges, and other migration routes he describes in his novel. He has been a guest lecturer at Stanford and UC Berkeley, among other universities. Born in Moose Lake, Minnesota, he currently lives in Pacifica, California, a suburb of San Francisco, with his wife, Takoma.

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Tuesday, December 1st, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

Join Pacifica's Book Club! This month we'll be discussing 'Kinder Than Solitude' by Yiyun Li.

Moving back and forth in time, between America today and China in the 1990s, "Kinder Than Solitude" is the story of three people whose lives are changed by a murder one of them may have committed. When Moran, Ruyu, and Boyang were young, they were involved in a mysterious incident in which a friend of theirs was poisoned. Grown up, the three friends are separated by distance and personal estrangement. Moran and Ruyu live in the United States, Boyang in China; all three are haunted by what really happened in their youth, and by doubt about themselves.

"Reverend Mom" Book Event with Author Michael Foley, November 12th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes Pacifica author Michael Foley as he discusses his new book, "Reverend Mom: The Words and Wisdom of Reverend Audrey B. Foley".

***Thursday, November 12th, 7pm-9pm***

About the Book: (From Mr. Foley)

"Reverend Mom" is about my Mother, Reverend Audrey B. Foley, her sermons and the story of her path from growing up in New York through college in 1939, to the military in World War II, single parenthood and a twenty-eight year career in teaching that ultimately led to her being one of the first women to be ordained a Lutheran minister in America.

In this book readers will discover the story of one woman's commitment to accept and address both the personal and cultural challenges of her times in order to make a difference in the quality of life around her. Foley pens the voice of his mother – heartfelt sermons – words and wisdom of Jesus Christ that she made real and meaningful in modern times. Throughout Reverend Audrey B. Foley's life, she overcame struggles and managed to teach herself, her sons, her students, and her congregation how to cross the bridge – between intellect and self- interest – to Christianity and the Bible. She empowers each person with critical thought and the faith to follow through with Christian actions. Her premise: In order to BE a Christian, you have to ACT like a Christian.

"I hope readers will enjoy my mother's story and use the insight and strength of her sermons to bring themselves closer to God when they need it most," states the author. "That's what she does and that's what I'd like to help her continue to do. It's a true story that proves love begets love."

About the Author:

Michael Foley is the son of "Reverend Mom." He can say, "I knew her when." He witnessed her remarkable transition from "Mom" to "Reverend". The letters in the book are communications between Foley and his Mom over decades – many of which are answers to specific questions. As a writer, Foley has been writing prose, poetry and songs since he began to write. The groundwork of his writing is the Bible combined with his mother's love and commitment to reading. His first published work was a song, recorded and released in 1966 with more on the way.

Florey's welcomes you to our culture discussion club!

***Wednesday, October 28th, 7:30pm-9pm***

October's topic is Prioritizing Education, a discussion on improving our education system. Everything from funding, curriculum changes, segregation, addressing special needs, etc.

What is Culture Club? It's just a bunch of neighbors that sit around in a bookstore once a month and just talk about things that are important to our community. A topic is announced every month. We encourage those attending to spend the month looking into the topic, so you can bring your educated opinion to the meeting. Share what you found! Heard a relevant NPR segment? Tell us! Read a book or an article? Bring it! ALL are welcome, the more the merrier. There are new people every month, so don't be shy. We occasionally sip wine, and snack on some crackers.

From Gina-

Why would someone be interested in a Past Life Regression? Often people

this person and myself? I feel like I've know them all my life but we just
met". Or people experiences deja vu when visiting another country,
experiencing the sensation that they have been there before. Another
example that we are hearing a lot about is "I was born in the wrong body".
A past life regression can give a deeper insight on some of the questions,
concerns, relationship dynamics and give deeper understanding on how these
pertain to your journey now.

How it works is you are taken into a light trance state using a guided
visualization. Then in trance you will be guided to the life that is most
relevant to this life where you can explore all facets of that life.
Most people have some profound experiences, so if you are interested please
join us.

'Singing with the Sirens' Book Discussion Series with Author Ellyn Bell, begins October 11th!

Florey's Book Co. invites you to a multi-week discussion group based on 'Singing with the Sirens', with author Ellyn Bell.

***Sunday, October 11th, 2-4pm***

From Ellyn:

Numerous women and men have suffered sexual abuse, exploitation or other sexual traumas as children. As a result, many people struggle with various issues around self worth, power and value in adulthood.

Singing with the Sirens addresses the long term effects of child sexual exploitation on women's lives, and how to embark upon a journey toward wholeness through healing and finding the lost voice of long ago.

Come to a group discussion with the authors of this book as we read and discuss chapter by chapter the content and the ability we all have to transform childhood pain and shame into grace and strength. This is a discussion group for anyone interested in the topic.

About Ms. Bell:

Ellyn Bell has worked as an organizational leader with at-risk and marginalized youth and addressing violence against women and children for 20 years. Her personal experiences as a youth informed her career choices. She was most recently, the Executive Director of the SAGE Project in San Francisco, one of the first peer-led organizations in the country to work with human trafficking and commercially exploited youth and adults. She holds a Master’s Degree in Religion, with an emphasis in Theology. She also received her social work license in the State of Iowa. Ellyn is also a yoga teacher and a trained dancer. She is mother to two wonderful people who are now extraordinary young adults.

"Lamentation" Book Event with Author Joe Clifford, October 3rd at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes Oakland author Joe Clifford as he discusses his new book, "Lamentation".

***Saturday, October 3rd, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

In a frigid New Hampshire winter, Jay Porter is trying to eke out a living and maintain some semblance of a relationship with his former girlfriend and their two-year-old son. When he receives an urgent call that Chris, his drug-addicted brother, is being questioned by the sheriff about his missing junkie business partner, Jay feels obliged to come to his rescue. After Jay negotiates his brother’s release from the county jail, Chris disappears into the night. As Jay begins to search for him, he is plunged into a cauldron of ugly lies and long-kept secrets that could tear apart his small hometown and threaten the lives of Jay and all those he holds dear. Powerful forces come into play that will stop at nothing until Chris is dead and the information he harbors is destroyed.

About the Author:

As an artist, I explore the dark places, the uncomfortable places, the dingy bricks and concrete cracks of a cold uncaring city. I write about the criminals and dope fiends, the dealers and the dreamers, the cops with their heels on the throat, closing in on the kill. I know this scene well, because I once moved among them.

As a homeless junkie for several years, I stole with them, slept with them. I fought along side them. My work shows this world intimately, and ultimately it is not a loss I choose to lament; rather, it is a celebration I embrace. Because for as ugly as it gets out there at times, something beautiful can still shine through the darkness of that life. You just have to know where to look, and you only need to stay on your feet long enough to find it.

I made it out. Many did not. So I go back now and extract what I can, what was preserved, and I champion it. I do it for me. I do it for them. And I do it for you. Enjoy.

"A Field Guide to Manzanitas" Book Event with Authors Tom Parker & Mike Vasey, August 29th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local authors Tom Parker and Mike Vasey as they discuss their new book, "A Field Guide to Manzanitas".

***Saturday, August 29th, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

Manzanitas are the familiar shrub with red bark and are the "rock stars" of woody shrub diversity in western North America. Ranging from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to coastal bluffs along the Pacific, from temperate rainforests along the North Coast to arid mountain slopes in Southern California, a wealth of manzanita species and subspecies can be found in an astonishingg arrayof environments. The Bay Area has over half the species reachable by short drives to our natural areas. Two Pacifica residents, Tom Parker and Mike Vasey, will talk about their adventures learning about manzanitas, their ecology and evolution, and talk about the field guide. Seemingly difficult for many botanists, the field guide has a number of features to make it easy to identify these beautiful native plants.

About the Authors:

Tom Parker has been a biology professor at San Francisco State University since 1980. He was raised in Texas, attended the University of Texas, Austin, and discovered California in graduate school at UC Santa Barbara. Currently only 9 manzanita species occupy his front yard.

Michael Vasey is an ecologist and conservation biologist. A long time lecturer at San Francisco State in the Biology Department, he is also the Director of the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research reserve. He obtained his AB from Dartmouth College, an MA in Ecology and Evolution from San Francisco State, and his Ph.D. from the University of California Santa Cruz.

Pacifica Culture Club! Discussion Topic: Changing Views of Gender Roles, August 26th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our culture discussion club!

***Wednesday, August 26th, 7:30pm-9pm***

Join Culture Club! A monthly social discussion of social issues at a local independent bookstore in Pacifica. Get to know neighbors, express your opinions and learn more about topics that matter. Every month I encourage those attending to do some self-guided "research" whether that be watching relevant movies, attending events, reading books, articles or watching informative videos. It's all fair game, whatever you see fit, and then bring what you found/learned to the group to discuss.

The topic of discussion this month is: The Changing Views of Gender Roles. How do attitudes to gender roles impact us? Whether it is employment, household duties, or even how we interact with others, do societal expectations effect your behavior? In what ways are general attitudes towards gender roles changing or staying the same? Join us and discuss these and other related topics.

"Ongoing Adventures of Mike Roman" Book Event with Author Michael Romano, August 1st at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Michael Romano as he discusses his new children's book, "Ongoing Adventures of Mike Roman".

***Saturday, August 1st, 1-3pm***

About the Book:

When fairy tales...and legends started, perhaps there was a basis of truth...

This is the tale of a young man who thought to himself... "I have to find out whether things like 'Second Star to the Right' really had a beginning in somewhere other than a writer's mind....

If that all those tales we've been told
throughout the years are just that ... tales ...
or are they in fact, truth, only a bit mixed up from all retelling by perhaps hundreds of years to those mixed up stories today. But maybe ... just, maybe ...they are true."

Young Mike is about to find out.

Pacifica Culture Club! Discussion Topic: #realtalk - Effects of Electronic Communication, July 29th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our culture discussion club!

***Wednesday, July 29th 7:30pm-9pm***

Join Culture Club! A monthly social discussion of social issues at a local independent bookstore in Pacifica. Get to know neighbors, express your opinions and learn more about topics that matter. Every month I encourage those attending to do some self-guided "research" whether that be watching relevant movies, attending events, reading books, articles or watching informative videos. It's all fair game, whatever you see fit, and then bring what you found/learned to the group to discuss. Wine & light bites are always offered!

The topic of discussion this month is: #realtalk - the Effects of Electronic Communication. How are modern communication technologies impacting your life? Do you obsessively check your email or social media? Are you concerned about what information is gathered about you or your family, and by whom? Is the 'always-on' nature of electronic communication a positive or negative thing? Join us and discuss these and more related topics.

"Horace the Cow" Book Event with Author Julia Carmen, July 18th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Julia Carmen as she discusses her new children's book, "Horace the Cow: Have You Ever Seen a Cow Climb a Tree?".

***Saturday, July 18th, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

Have you ever seen a cow climb a tree?

No cow would climb a tree unless it was the right tree. No cow would consider climbing just any tree?

Once upon a time, there was a black cow named Horace. She was named by a young boy who loved her and so she loved her name. But because her name was Horace, she feared that no bull would ever ask her out, though admittedly she had never let any bull get to know her.

The little boy, whose name was Nakoa, visited Horace every day on his way home from school. Often when Nakoa went to sleep - and when Horace went to sleep, the two met each other in the real time of dreams. This is the way it is with friends.....

"If You Ask Me" Book Event with Author Anna Boothe, July 12th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Anna Boothe as she discusses her new memoir, "If You Ask Me".

***Sunday, July 12th, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

From Ms. Boothe: Someone gave me a book with blank pages and, being a writer, I must fill them up with a story, my story. And now, some five years later, it is time to begin...

I don't want to write your standard autobiography, beginning with my birth and going on year by year to the here and now. But I want to record the things, the people and the moments sometimes with pictures and my poems, that mean the most to me, that I want to save and share with anyone who wants to read this.

I am not -nor do I think I will be- a famous person, so there is no ready captive audience for this. but I would like to write this in a way that makes you want to "ask me" and read on...

About the Author:

Ms. Boothe was born in Chicago and spent her childhood in Kansas City, MO. She received a Bachelor's degree in journalism, a Master's in English, and a Master's in counselling. She has also lived and taught in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She is the founder of the Preserve Our Pier Supporters, which has generated almost $2 million in grants to repair the Pacifica Pier. She lives in Pacifica with her husband Gary, and their dog Louie.
