Face the Lion - Book event with author Mark Marchetti, Nov. 4th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Mark Marchetti as he discusses his book, "Face the Lion".

***Saturday, November 4th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

Coming of age as a young Maasai in Africa required a series of rituals, followed up by an act of extreme courage. If you were successful and didn't die in the process you became a Maasai warrior earning the respect of the tribe. This was the practice for centuries. It was not questioned as right or wrong but was the expected goal of every young boy. To our modern first world outlook many of these rites of passage seem like nothing more than barbaric practices of an unsophisticated third world. Yet these practices endured, suiting the needs of these cultures. In the modern world, with all its legal processes, coming of age is often determined by reaching a specific age. When you can drive, when you can smoke, when you can drink, when you can marry, when you can go to war... all determined by age. True, you might have to pass a written test or show a physical skill level, but in truth, it's never much of a test. We expect that by a certain age a person has reached a level of maturity to accept responsibility. We expect they will be able to face adversity, tragedy, fear, doubt, and all life will throw at them. In 1930, Marlin Colby is a young man from a wealthy family in Charleston, South Carolina. Circumstances will force him to leave his home, go to sea and finally end up in Africa... a far different world. He will learn about a father he barely knew, he will learn about himself... but most importantly, he will learn to face the lion.

About the author:

Mark Marchetti was born and raised near San Jose, California. He graduated from Los Altos High School and went on to earn degrees from De Anza College and California State University San Jose. During his childhood years he was primarily involved in sports and music activities. He became a music instructor at the age of fifteen while still in high school and was a musician into his college years. At the age of seventeen his parents gave him perhaps the greatest, most long lasting gift of his life... SCUBA diving lessons. He has always been fascinated by the sea and spent a great deal of time at the beaches near Santa Cruz, hanging out with friends or surfing. Diving has taken him all over the world exposing him to many of the exotic people and places he writes about. He has been a diving instructor, search and rescue diver and has done commercial dive work. He continues to travel and dive on a regular basis. Mark has always loved history and his writing mixes fiction with historical facts and legends. After college he began a twenty eight year career in law enforcement. He still teaches firearms training at the Police Academy. During his earlier years he also became interested in auto and motorcycle racing, participating in races for a few years. He still enjoys a cruise down Highway 1 on his Harley Davidson enjoying some of the most dramatic scenery in the world. Hunting, fishing and golf are also priorities in his life. Mark has four adult children and lives with his wife , Pamela, dividing their time between homes in Montara, California and Catalina Island.

October 2017 Poetry at Florey's.

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event!

***Saturday, October 28th, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are Patrice Haan and Christina Lloyd.

From Sherri:

Ladies and Gentleman,

I would like to announce the last evening of Poetry at Florey's for the 2017. I feel fortunate to be able to introduce two friends as our featured poets, Patrice Haan and Christina Lloyd, to close out our season in elegant style. As well as being a poet, Patrice (whom many of you will remember), is a singer, songwriter and Celtic harper, and we can look forward to her musical as well as poetic artistry.

I hope you will consider joining us for the last evening of the year, bring along a poem or two to read at open mic (3 minutes, please), and a snack, drink or supplies (napkins, cups, plates) for the table, if you can. We'll begin with open mic at 7:30, take a break, and come back to hear our features.

About the featured poets:

PATRICE HAAN

The elevator speech: Patrice Haan (Oakland CA) is a harper, singer, songwriter, composer and wordsmith, devoted to the healing presence of listening.

The longer version: I grew up in a family in love with words and music. My upbringing and larger story also taught me that we all long for stories and we all long to be heard. And the intersection of all those activities is comfort and joy.

I’ve been writing all my life and actively composing for over 20 years. In recent years I decided to use harp to add a new dimension to my poetry. Feedback has been encouraging: Your harp music created depth and dimensionality that I have rarely seen at any event. [Your work brings] us together to a deeper & peaceful place.
The Oakland Tribune’s Dave Newhouse wrote: “the most towering aspect of her music is her poetry. This Walt Whitman on the harp can quiet a room into absolute silence.”
As well as playing therapeutic music with Healing Muses, a non-profit that provides music for healing in local hospitals, I have recorded three albums of original music, lush, melodic collections for harp and piano, and perform jazz standards with Tony Marcus in the Bay-area duo, Leftover Dreams.

I have had poems published in San Francisco Peace & Hope, We’Moon, North Coast Literary Review and am honoured to return to Florey’s Books Poetry Series.

Visit Patrice’s sites at www.patricehaan.com, www.leftoverdreams.com and www.healingmuses.org.

CHRISTINA LLOYD

Christina Lloyd holds a master's degree in creative writing from Lancaster University (U.K.) and a master’s degree in Hispanic languages and literatures from U.C. Berkeley. Her work appears in various publications, including The North and Canadian Woman Studies. She is pursuing a Ph.D. in creative writing through Lancaster University. She lives in San Francisco.

Local Forum: 'The Cost of Living', October 26th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our discussion group!

***Thursday, October 26th, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

We will be meeting to discuss the topic: The cost of living.

From Nico:

Last month's discussion regarding education was fun, and we even managed to have a new face come by! Towards the end of the discussion, we started to talk about how even having a higher education doesn't guarantee you'll live comfortably, especially out here in the bay area.

So since Measure C is coming to a vote next month, and a majority of us have lived around in Pacifica to experience what is happening money and price wise, it's only fitting that the discussion on October 26th should be: The Cost of Living.

Admittedly, my expertise on this subject isn't as vast as some of yours are. So I hope to learn as much as I can about the nuances of the housing market and the cultural shift we're beginning to see.

Questions to Consider:
-How much was the rent for your first apartment?
-What would be a reasonable rent for an apartment now?
-With people moving out of the city, how does that affect the community?
-Do you know of anyone who's considering moving out or already out of the bay area?

Florey's Book Club: 'Rebecca' October 19th!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, October 19th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our October book, 'Rebecca' by Daphne du Maurier.

About the book:

"Last night, I dreamt I went to Manderley again." With these words, the reader is ushered into an isolated gray stone mansion on the windswept Cornish coast, as the second Mrs. Maxim de Winter recalls the chilling events that transpired as she began her new life as the young bride of a husband she barely knew. For in every corner of every room were phantoms of a time dead but not forgotten--a past devotedly preserved by the sinister housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers: a suite immaculate and untouched, clothing laid out and ready to be worn, but not by any of the great house's current occupants. With an eerie presentiment of evil tightening her heart, the second Mrs. de Winter walked in the shadow of her mysterious predecessor, determined to uncover the darkest secrets and shattering truths about Maxim's first wife--the late and hauntingly beautiful Rebecca.

About the author:

Daphne du Maurier (1907-1989) has been called one of the great shapers of popular culture and the modern imagination. Among her more famous works are The Scapegoat, Jamaica Inn, Rebecca, and the short story "The Birds," all of which were subsequently made into films--the latter three directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
