Pacifica Book Club: 'Brooklyn' Dec.15th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, December 15th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our December book, 'Brooklyn' by Colm Tóibín.

About the book:

In Ireland in the early 1950s, Eilis Lacey is one of many who cannot find work at home. Thus when a job is offered in America, it is clear to everyone that she must go. Leaving behind her family and country, Eilis heads for unfamiliar Brooklyn, and to a crowded boarding house where the landlady's intense scrutiny and the small jealousies of her fellow residents only deepen her isolation. Slowly, the pain of parting is buried beneath the rhythms of her new life -- and finally, she begins to realize that she has found a sort of happiness. As she falls in love, news comes from home that forces her back to Enniscorthy -- not to the constrictions of her old life, but to new possibilities which conflict deeply with the life she has left behind in Brooklyn.

About the author:

Colm Tóibín is the author of seven novels, including The Master, winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; Brooklyn, winner of the Costa Book Award; The Testament of Mary, and Nora Webster, as well as two story collections. Three times shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, Tóibín lives in Dublin and New York.

Growing up in San Francisco / St. Cecilia Parish - Two-book event with author Frank Dunnigan, Dec. 7th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes author Frank Dunnigan as he discusses his two new books, "Growing Up in San Francisco: More Boomer Memories from Playland to Candlestick Park" and "San Francisco's St. Cecilia Parish: A History"

***Wednesday, December 7th, 7pm***

About the books:

Growing Up in San Francisco:

Newcomers and visitors can still enjoy iconic San Francisco with activities like riding a cable car or taking in the view from Twin Peaks. But San Franciscans cherish memories of a place quite different. They reminisce about seafood dinners at A. Sabella's on Fisherman's Wharf, the enormous Christmas tree in Union Square's City of Paris department store and taking a handful of dimes to Playland-at-the-Beach for arcade games and cotton candy. In his second volume of these unforgettable stories, local author and historian Frank Dunnigan vividly recalls the many details that made life special in the City by the Bay for generations.

St. Cecilia's Parish:

Originally housed in a two-story home and then in an old converted schoolhouse along Taraval Street in 1917, San Francisco s St. Cecilia Church today stands as a cultural pillar and architectural gem of the Parkside District. The parish continually grew to meet the demands of its members, despite the hardships brought on by events like the Great Depression and both world wars. Through years of expansions, new construction and additions, the parish remains an active gathering place for thousands of people. Local author Frank Dunnigan utilizes community remembrances and photos from dozens of different sources to tell the story of a vibrant parish that continues to live up to its motto: The Finest, the Greatest and the Best.

About the author:

Baby boomer Frank Dunnigan has family roots in San Francisco that can be traced all the way back to 1860. A graduate of St. Ignatius College Prep and the University of San Francisco, he spent more than twenty-five years as a bank auditor and a corporate trainer, and is now a recent retiree after a career with the federal government. He has authored two other books on San Francisco history for The History Press, and writes a monthly column, STREETWISE, for the Western Neighborhoods Project.

When a psychic warns Mike Mason of a death threat against his life and of dramatic changes in the lives of those around him, he brushes off these warnings with his usual sardonic wit; only to find himself waking up at a local hospital. Florey's Books welcomes local author Cheryl Ammeter as she discusses her novel, "Ivey and the Airship"

***Saturday, November 19th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

Coming of age presents a dilemma for Ivey Thornton. She’s a spirited girl with more than her share of strength and intelligence, but no interest in courtship or marriage. Ivey dreams of following in her father’s footsteps, tracking the unknown species of flora and fauna that threaten the world of Aether. Her plans are upended when Arvel Thornton mysteriously arranges her engagement to the reclusive heir of Fenchurche Industries. She boards the airship Monarch with the intention of helping Miles Fenchurche discover a happier future, as long as it doesn’t include her. But something evil has stowed away on Miles’ ship and if Ivey doesn’t learn how to trust him, the greatest adventure of her life might be her last.

About the author:

Cheryl Ammeter is an award-winning scriptwriter who worked for seven seasons on the globally acclaimed children’s program, Barney & Friends. After years of adhering to production budgets and schedules, her larger-than-life imagination has finally been set free in Ivey and the Airship.

This sci-fi fantasy novel is the first in a five book series called Aether’s Edge. Cheryl is currently at work on book two, Masters of Misfortune.

Pacifica Book Club: 'To Kill a Mockingbird' Nov. 3rd at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, November 3rd, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

Come by for a chat about our November book, 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee.

About the book:

The unforgettable novel of a childhood in a sleepy Southern town and the crisis of conscience that rocked it, To Kill A Mockingbird became both an instant bestseller and a critical success when it was first published in 1960. It went on to win the Pulitzer prize in 1961 and was later made into an Academy Award-winning film, also a classic.

Compassionate, dramatic, and deeply moving, To Kill A Mockingbird takes readers to the roots of human behavior-to innocence and experience, kindness and cruelty, love and hatred, humor and pathos. Now with over 15 million copies in print and translated into forty languages, this regional story by a young Alabama woman claims universal appeal. Harper Lee always considered her book to be a simple love story. Today it is regarded as a masterpiece of American literature.

About the author:

Nelle Harper Lee is known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird, her only major work. In 1999, it was voted "Best Novel of the Century" in a poll by Library Journal. Ms. Lee was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contribution to literature in 2007. Her father was a lawyer who served in the Alabama state legislature from 1926 to 1938. As a child, Lee was a tomboy and enjoyed the friendship of her schoolmate, Truman Capote. After completing To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee accompanied Capote to Holcomb, Kansas, to assist him in researching his bestselling book, In Cold Blood.

Florey's Books welcomes Pacifica author Terrence Kero as he discusses his novel, "Walking the World 2"

***Saturday, October 22nd, 2-4pm***

About the book:

Walking the World 2, Book Two of Terrence Kero’s ground-breaking trilogy about human migration, tells the story of how five ethnic/linguistic hunter-gatherer clans left Africa some eighty thousand years ago and migrated to the western border of Thailand over the course of many millennia. The novel opens in 2011 at the University of California Berkeley, where Hanna Koskinen is an anthropology graduate student planning to write her PhD thesis on early human migration. When she becomes friends with Leewan Somwan, her next-door neighbor from Thailand, she begins to consider making Thailand the focus of her research, and when she falls in love with Leewan’s brother, Chaat, her decision is sealed. Chaat is a brilliant linguist who has developed a theory about the earliest prototypes of the five major Southeast Asian language families, and Hanna thinks she can use his theory, along with human population genetics and age-dated archaeological discoveries, to support the bold argument she wants to make in her thesis: that Thailand was the initial gateway for the first migration of homo sapiens to Southeast Asia. Stories imagining the tragedies and joys of these prehistoric people on their arduous journeys are interspersed with the present-day narrative of the tragedies and joys of the Koskinen and Somwan families, a narrative culminating in dramatic revelations about the early ancestry of the Somwans and the unexpected links that bond humankind.

About the Author:

Terrence Kero is an electronic engineer turned author. Over his career, he has traveled to eighty-eight countries worldwide, and has served as general chairman of four international telecommunications conferences involving participants from more than forty countries in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Since he first went to Thailand more than two decades ago, he has visited fifty of its seventy-seven provinces. He has been a guest lecturer at several universities in Asia, including Beijing University (Speech Recognition Technology) and Thailand’s Thammasat University (Anthropology Department) and Mahidol University (Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia). On the basis of his experiences with people all over Thailand, he has concluded that it is truly the Land of Smiles. He currently lives in Pacifica, a suburb of San Francisco, with his wife, Takoma.

'A Decade in the Life of Dr. Zorro' book event with author PJ Killeen, Oct. 1st at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes author PJ Killeen as he discusses his memoir, "A Decade in the Life of Dr.Zorro: A Seventies Saga"

***Saturday, October 1st, 7:30pm***

About the book:

For over 30 years, my patient wife has been a captive audience as I relentlessly brought up my past adventures and misdeeds under the pretense and alias of “Dr. Zorro.” For all those years, she pleaded with me to chronicle my stories—if not for posterity, then at least to leave a dubious legacy for our grandchildren and anyone else who may take a passing interest.

About the Author:

As my dear wife pointed out, this endeavor would be an excellent exercise to stimulate my memory. Several years ago, I was blindsided by an ocular stroke, which not only affected my vision but meddled with my memory as well. I saw the wisdom in my wife’s advice. In these pages, I have written down the events that comprised the decade of decadence and spiritual awakening (1970 to 1980). Keep in mind that this is not a fictional account. The truth is my anchor in my sea of stories. I have altered names to protect the innocent (and not so innocent), but the facts remain intact.

'Method to the Madness' book event with authors B.H. & Elizabeth James, Sept. 3rd at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes authors B.H. James and Elizabeth James as they discusses their new book, "Method to the Madness: A Common Core Guide to Creating Critical Thinkers Through the Study of Literature".

***Saturday, September 3rd, 2:00-4:00pm***

About the Book:

This book is ideal for the thousands of teachers who entered the profession in the last ten years and taught prescribed curriculum geared toward end of year bubble testing. Its intent is to empower districts and their teachers to create their own (free!) curriculum that will exceed the expectations of Common Core assessments, as well as create life-long learners that are college and career ready. By employing inquiry based units of study that insist on the use of iconic literature at the center, students will be more prepared for what awaits them with Common Core exams.

About the Authors:

B.H. James is the author of Parnucklian for Chocolate, a finalist for the 2014 PEN Center USA Literary Award in Fiction. He has spent the last ten years teaching English to sixth through twelfth graders in one of the largest school districts in the state of California.

Elizabeth James has spent the last eight years teaching English to all ability levels. She served the last four years as coordinator for the prestigious International Baccalaureate program in one of the largest school districts in the state of California. She and B.H. have two amazing sons.

Pacifica Book Club: 'Pillars of the Earth', Sept. 1st at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, September 1st, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

Come by for a chat about our September book, 'Pillars of the Earth' by Ken Follett.

A departure for the bestselling thriller writer, the historical epic stunned readers and critics alike with its ambitious scope and gripping humanity. Today, it stands as a testament to Follett s unassailable command of the written word and to his universal appeal.

The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect a man divided in his soul of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame and of a struggle between good and evil that will turn church against state, and brother against brother.

A spellbinding epic tale of ambition, anarchy, and absolute power set against the sprawling medieval canvas of twelfth-century England, this is Ken Follett's historical masterpiece.

'The Happy Blue Couch' book event with author Jodyne Ferreira August 20th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Jodyne Ferreira as she discusses her new children's picture book, "The Happy Blue Couch".

***Saturday, August 20th, 2:00-4:00pm***

About the Book:

A little blue couch has many special purposes at the busy preschool it calls home. It provides a comfortable place for sick children to rest, a spot for little ones to sit after they dress up, and a place for all the children to line up their toys. But the couch is not just practical, it is magical too!

With help from their imaginations, the children transform the couch into a pretend bed, a big blue boat, a flying carpet, a car, and many other fun things. But when the couch begins to show its age and the teacher must make a difficult decision, it is not long before someone proves that love lasts forever.

In this charming children's tale, a magical and beloved blue couch fuels the imaginations of the children at a preschool.

About the Author:

Jodyne Ferreira taught preschool for over thirty years. Now retired, Jodyne is a grandmother of five and great-grandmother of one. She has lived in Half Moon Bay for her entire life and continues to be an active community member.

Pacifica Book Club: 'Never Let Me Go', July 26th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Tuesday, July 26th, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

Come by for a chat about our July book, 'Never Let Me Go' by Kazuo Ishiguro.

From the Booker Prize-winning author of The Remains of the Day and When We Were Orphans, comes an unforgettable edge-of-your-seat mystery that is at once heartbreakingly tender and morally courageous about what it means to be human.
Hailsham seems like a pleasant English boarding school, far from the influences of the city. Its students are well tended and supported, trained in art and literature, and become just the sort of people the world wants them to be. But, curiously, they are taught nothing of the outside world and are allowed little contact with it.
Within the grounds of Hailsham, Kathy grows from schoolgirl to young woman, but it's only when she and her friends Ruth and Tommy leave the safe grounds of the school (as they always knew they would) that they realize the full truth of what Hailsham is.
Never Let Me Go breaks through the boundaries of the literary novel. It is a gripping mystery, a beautiful love story, and also a scathing critique of human arrogance and a moral examination of how we treat the vulnerable and different in our society. In exploring the themes of memory and the impact of the past, Ishiguro takes on the idea of a possible future to create his most moving and powerful book to date.

"Coffeehouse" book event with author Anna Boothe, July 16th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Anna Boothe as she discusses her new novel, "Coffeehouse".

***Saturday, July 16th, 2:00-4:00pm***

About the Book:

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to visit a coffeehouse in the San Francisco Haight/Ashbury during the Hippie Era? COFFEEHOUSE will take you there. Written by the manager of a coffeehouse on Haight Street during this golden era, COFFEEHOUSE is the "real dope" on the Hippies of Haight Street. The story features Susan, an artist who struggles to keep her marriage to Sam, a shoe salesman who beats her up in a fight she initiated, Ishmael and Sarah the black and white hippie couple who manage the coffeehouse and poetry readings; Bob their gentleman bouncer and James, their soul brother dealer and Buck the black cloud who makes his last stand on a drunken New Years' Eve. This is the "Gone With the Wind" of the Hippie Era, the last stand of grass and poetry before the inevitable rush of the rich to this famous street, gradually nudging the Coffeehouse, book store, bars and smoke shop off the street, making this the last testament of one of the most important eras in recent history, when during a few years we have the rebirth of poetry readings, grass but not acid or hard drugs, psychedelic art and a return of the mural, communal living shelters and soup kitchens. and the Peace Movement Anna Boothe, manager of the coffeehouse, won a PEN Working Writers Grant for this book and now it is ready for your vicarious visit to the Coffeehouse during its Holiday poetry reading, visits by the Park Police and the death of James, symbolic of the death of the Coffeehouse which follows.

About the Author:

Anna Boothe managed the "Coffeehouse" on San Francisco's Haight Street during the last days of the Hippie era and tells all in this novel. She has a bachelor's degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri (where we dreamed of visiting the "hippie Haight. She taught writing at the University of Missouri and the University of Colorado before coming to the "University of the Street" and taking notes for this novel. Most of the characters (besides Ishmael and Sarah who are fictional) and incidents in the novel are real and will bring back memories to those in the area during this period. For those not here, it will give them a chance to sit and have a cup at the COFFEEHOUSE.

We hope to see you!

Pacifica Book Club: 'Y: The Last Man', June 28th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Tuesday, June 28th, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

Come by for a chat about our June book, 'Y: The Last Man' by Brian K. Vaughn & Pia Guerra.

Y: THE LAST MAN, winner of three Eisner Awards and one of the most critically acclaimed, best-selling comic books series of the last decade, is that rare example of a page-turner that is at once humorous, socially relevant and endlessly surprising. Written by Brian K. Vaughan (Lost, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD, EX MACHINA) and with art by Pia Guerra, this is the saga of Yorick Brown—the only human survivor of a planet-wide plague that instantly kills every mammal possessing a Y chromosome. Accompanied by a mysterious government agent, a brilliant young geneticist and his pet monkey, Ampersand, Yorick travels the world in search of his lost love and the answer to why he's the last man on earth.

June 2016 Poetry at Florey's!

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event.

***Saturday, June 25th, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are: Richard Loranger and Ken Saffran. The featured poets will be followed by an open mic period. Open mic sign-up is first come, first served. This event is open to the public and free of charge. You are welcome to bring a snack or beverage to share.

From Sherri, the host:

" I invite you to join me, Aaron and our two fine featured poets, Richard Loranger and Ken Saffran, as they regale us with their poetic vision. Please bring a snack or drink to share, if you're able to, and some work of your own or a favorite poet's to add in your voice at open mic. It promises to be a fine and festive evening.

It is also Bob's birthday (he would have been 70), and I'm planning to read some of the poems he wrote in his early life. If you'd care to read something for him at open mic, it would be very welcome. Since he was my co-creator for this poetry series, and did so much to make our evenings welcoming, warm and smooth-running, it feels appropriate to salute him at this reading."

About the featured readers:

Richard Loranger is a writer, performer, visual artist, and all around squeaky wheel, currently residing in Oakland , CA . His new book of flash prose, Sudden Windows (Zeitgeist Press, 2016), has been enthusiastically received. He is also the author of the Poems for Teeth, The Orange Book, and nine chapbooks. Other recent work can be found in Oakland Review #2, Overthrowing Capitalism vol. 2 (Revolutionary Poets Brigade), and the new anthology The Careless Embrace of the Boneshaker (great weather for MEDIA). You can find more about his work and scandals at www.richardloranger.com.

Ken Saffran has poems published in Ambush, Amsterdam Quarterly, Before Passing (Great Weather for Media) and SF Peace And Hope. He lives in San Francisco because he can't afford it.

"Crossing the Lines" Book Event with Author Tony Press, June 25th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Tony Press as he discusses his new collection of short stories, "Crossing the Lines".

***Saturday, June 25th, 1:00-3:00pm***

About the Book:

"Gentle Reader, welcome to the tender-hearted stories of Tony Press. In Crossing the Lines, hippies, poets, wanderers and thieves steal our hearts, not to break them, but to expand their beating chambers. Tony Press writes with care and precision about the quiet moments that swiftly and un-expectantly recalibrate our wavering lives. The strengths of these stories rest in their good humor and close attention to how we fall in love and how that love transports us into the dark and thorny depths of our own wilderness. Tony Press is the perfect guide for these unforgettable adventures." - Amber Dermont, The Starboard Sea and Damage Control

About the Author:

Tony Acarasiddhi Press lives near San Francisco and tries to pay attention. Sometimes he does. During a period of meditation on a retreat in 2003 he could barely sit still because a story was spilling into his consciousness. At the final bell he raced outside and wrote it down as fast as he could. He’s been writing ever since, primarily short stories, but also poems and essays. Since 2004 his efforts have appeared online and in print close to 100 times, including journals from at least five different countries. In 2014, Boston Literary Magazine nominated one of his stories for the Pushcart Prize. A few years earlier, JMWW had nominated another story for the Million Writers Award. He continues to follow a Buddhist path (hence the name Acarasiddhi), and struggles to sit still even without the intrusion of a story. His personal mantra is “keep walking” and he will do that as long as he can.

We hope to see you!
