Poetry Reading at Florey's Celebrating Poet William Stafford's Birthday, Saturday, Jan. 12, 7:30pm

Florey's invites you to a poetry reading in celebration of the poet William Stafford.

***Saturday, Jan. 12th, 7:30-9:30pm***

Stafford, who died in the early 90s, was a native of Kansas, a conscientious objector in WWII (who served 5 years in an American prison camp, where he developed his life-long habit of arising long before dawn to write a poem every day), a teacher of literature and poetry at William and Mary College in Oregon, married and father of four, who, if his daily poem didn't work out as planned, famously said, "I lower my expectations." His students adored him, especially when he advised them not to be afraid to write bad poems!

The William Stafford Society in Oregon initiated the celebration of Stafford's birthday, and there are now multiple such celebrations in the country. The evening will run a bit differently than our usual poetic events. The feature will be a video of an absolutely marvelous and rollicking conversation between Stafford and his great friend Robert Bly. The two were as different as poets and people can be, but the sparks that fly between them are incredibly inspiring! Then, at open mic, we ask anyone who wants to read to share a poem by Stafford, or inspired by knowing him, or his vision of life. If you haven't read his work, we urge you to find some and, as Stafford said in one of his poems, "You, reading this, be ready"; be ready for a compelling, fierce, reflective, tender and spacious view of our human life on earth and beyond.

We hope to see you!

"Enamored with Place" Book Event with Author Wendy Bertrand, Dec. 15th, 2-4pm!

Florey's Books welcomes author and architect Wendy Bertrand as she discusses her book "Enamored with Place: As Woman + As Architect"

***Saturday, Dec. 15th, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

Lyrical, insightful, and pleasantly avant-garde, this is the story of an intensely creative and ambitious young woman who discovered her love for place, for design, for building - that is, for architecture - even before she knew the word. It is an easy-to-read account chronicling the life and times of one of the few female to enter the field of architecture in th early '60s. As a single mother, Wendy Bertrand accepted the job security over the potential glamour, prestige, or celebrity of private practice, where architectural stars shine. She tells us how she pursued a career while continuing to value her perspective and insight as a woman, a mother, and someone who cares passionately about social equity. Her love of place infuses every aspect of her personal and professional life.

She tells us of her adventures in travel, education, marriage, childbirth, motherhood, and work. This everyday architect worked in the traditionally male-valued US Navy from 1973 to 1991, and within her civilian job she found ways to add humanistic features to that institutional military engineering culture. She took pride in public service while creating opportunities to improve workplace norms. In effect, the management and design decisions she embraced continue to challenge cultural convention in the workplace today. She reflects on how what she knows now could influence thw way our culture goes about the making of place.

This is also a story about a woman coming into her own as she matures, enjoys the fiber arts, and embraces the elements of her life that have enduring value.
