Pacifica Culture Club! April's Topic: The Stigma of Mental Illness, April 29th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our culture discussion club!

***Wednesday, April 29th, 7:30-9:00pm***

From Amanda, the host:

Culture Club, for those who are curious, is similar to a book club. The difference is that instead of a book being assigned, it's a topic of discussion! Then through the month you can chose between books, movies, etc. on the topic (I always provide a list of recommendations), and we come together to discuss how that topic spanned those various mediums. It's very casual, fun and spirited with plenty of civil opinions. It's really just a great way to meet neighbors and talk about things that matter, in a social setting. Wine and light bites in a cozy book store atmosphere. Come join us!! ALL are welcome.

With that said, April's topic will be: The Stigma of Mental Illness. This is yet another broad and deep topic! It's one that I'm sure has touched everyone and yet few really discuss. Coincidentally, April's book club book is Still Alice and I am part way through it and have realized it'd be an excellent book for the Culture Club topic as well. So, without further ado, here are the list of recommended items on the topic of:

The Stigma of Mental Illness

Fiction Book: 'Still Alice' by Lisa Genova; 'Girl, Interrupted' by Susanna Kaysen

Non-Fiction Book: Crazy Like Us: The Globalization of the American Psyche by Ethan Watters

Movie in Theaters: Still Alice

Movie to Rent: It's Kind of a Funny Story or The Soloist

TEDtalks:
What's so Funny About Mental Illness?
http://www.ted.com/talks/ruby_wax_what_s_so_funny_about_mental_illness?language=en

On Being Just Crazy Enough
http://www.ted.com/talks/joshua_walters_on_being_just_crazy_enough

Please let me know if you have any further recommendations to share with the group! These are just things I found that look interesting but again, this topic is broad and deep and my list doesn't come close to scraping the iceberg. If you would like to get one of the books from Florey's, let me know and I can give Aaron our order as a group! Looking forward to discussing 4/29!

“Reading Robert Frost” Discussion with poet Casey FitzSimons, April 18th at Florey's!

Florey’s Book Company welcomes Redwood City poet Casey FitzSimons in a discussion of Robert Frost’s poems. Casey is a widely published poet writing in form and free verse. She has a background in visual art, editing, and criticism. Her chapbooks include Against the Familiar Wall (2014) and Standing in the Open House (2013). She has a master’s degree in Fine Arts from San José State University.

From Casey:

This is a continuation of Frost's thematic subjects that we started in Reading Robert Frost 1. We'll review metaphor, meaning, and poetic form. We could discuss:

Birches
"Out, Out-"
Acquainted with the Night
The Silken Tent
Once in the Pacific
To Heavenward

Some topics we could touch on are how environment and era affect a poet's work, the role of sensory images, how a poet explores his or her own themes.

This is a free discussion event. Non-poets are welcome. Poem copies will be provided. Walk-ins are welcome, but if you know you’ll attend, RSVP to casey.fitzsimons@gmail.com or (650) 224-9857, or contact her with specific questions.
