"Zelda Darling" Book Event with Authors Penny Lazzari Thompson & Christine Area, Dec. 22nd at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes authors Penny Lazzari Thompson and Christine Area as they discuss their new children's book "Zelda Darling with Pixie Cee"

***Sunday, December 22nd, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

Crash! Joe and Zelda Darling jump when they hear the sound from inside The Flower Shop. Then fast as a dart, Alley cat races from the shop and out into the street. The tires on the cars and trucks squeal and screech as Alley makes it to the other side and frantically claws her way up the tall wooden fence. What was the loud crash? What happened inside the flower shop that scared Alley so? You can bet Zelda Darling will get to the bottom of this. Will Zelda and her friends find out what really happened inside the flower shop?

About the Authors:

Penny Lazzari has always loved writing, books and children. From the time she was a child, she enjoyed reading books from the Book Mobile. As a teenager, Penny worked in her high school library as a volunteer. She also kept her children’s grammar school library open by volunteering and becoming its head librarian. Penny brought in other stay-at-home mothers to help keep the library open longer hours. She also brought programs like R.I.F. (Reading Is Fundamental) into the school to help children learn that reading can be fun and enjoyable. Penny had the pleasure of knowing Zelda Darling and knew a book must be written about this princess cat. Penny enjoyed having the opportunity of recording the story so that others could also enjoy reading about Zelda’s zany adventures.

Christine Area has always enjoyed twisting and working with words, in a way that makes your mind think and wonder. Having already being published in poetry books and newspapers, her work as also been seen live at B.A.D. (Be A Dear) girls events. Continuing to deepen her enjoyment of the written word, Christine is now venturing into children’s books. She is excited and looking forward to this challenge in bringing enjoyable characters to life.

"Deacon's Crossbow" Book Event with Author David G. Brown, Dec. 12 at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes Alaska-based author David G. Brown as he discusses his true crime book "Deacon's Crossbow: The True Story of a Crossbow Killing on Interstate 95"

***Thursday, Dec. 12th 6-9pm***

About the Book:

How does a high school valedictorian, former member of the famed 101st Airborne, respected church deacon, husband and father of three end up with a first-degree murder conviction and serving life without parole? Deacon's Crossbow is a bone-chilling and compelling work of true crime- about fate, fear, facts, and personality, especially that of convict Donald S. Graham.

Donald and his wife were driving home from dance lessons when they happened upon two men on Interstate 95 in Massachusetts. When Donald reached for his crossbow, all hell broke loose. The end result: the male driver is dead and the deacon is in prison for the rest of his life. You'll follow the labyrinth of events from the incident all the way to the present. The story is unique because it includes Mr. Graham's views and sentiments from within the walls of incarceration, as well as perspectives from a free man, the author.

Was justice served? Or was the driver the aggressor and the deacon the victim?

About the Author:

David G. Brown has previously written freelance for the Woonsocket Call (RI), as a columnist for the Castro Valley Forum (CA), and as a columnist for the magazine Edibles East Bay (CA). In 2011 he served as president of the Alaska Writers Guild and continues to be their Program Director. He has a forthcoming novel titled "Return of the Free Faller" and a series which includes more than 75 short stories. Originally from Woonsocket, Rhode Island, where he spent over 25 years as a businessman, Mr. Brown now lives in Anchorage, Alaska.

"My Articles" Book Event with Author Rauf Naqishbendi, Dec. 7th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Rauf Naqishbendi as he discusses his new collection "My Articles".

***Saturday, December 7th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

This is a collection of columns published from 2002-2013 through several web media sites. These articles encompass historical events from the Iraq War onset to American troop withdrawal. Commentaries include the process of framing the Iraqi constitution and democracy in Iraq and persistence on partitioning Iraq to more than one country.

These articles also deal with the Kurdish dream for an independent Kurdistan and, from the Kurdish perspective, defend the formation of a sovereign Kurdish state.

While considering the Iraq War, in which the Turks were proven perfidious toward America, the author calls for thwarting American political, military, and monetary aid to Turkey. The author also calls for the Turks to come to terms with past genocide against defenseless Armenians and their half-century genocide against their Kurdish population.

Also covered are American politics and democracy, humanities, religion, terrorism, and Middle East chaos.

Mr. Naqishbendi is also the author "The Garden of the Poets", an autobiography.

Florey's Books welcomes author Rebecca M. Douglass as she reads from and discusses her new young adult book: "Return to Skunk Corners: The Ninja Librarian Book 2"

***Saturday, November 16th, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

Things have been changing in Skunk Corners, and Big Al isn't sure she likes it. Unless it means a hot bath. Twenty-one new stories bring you closer than ever to Skunk Corners with its humor, love of books, and Ninja wisdom (sometimes accompanied by a kick where it will do the most good). This second book in the Ninja Librarian series shows the continuing struggles as the town becomes a community and as Al finds new ways to accept responsibilities she never thought she wanted.

About the Author:

Rebecca M. Douglass grew up in Idaho, Arizona, and Washington states, and now lives near San Francisco with her husband and two teenaged sons. Her imagination resides where it pleases, in and out of this world. After more than a decade of working at the library, she is still learning the secrets of the Ninja Librarian. Her passions include backpacking, hiking, books, and running and biking. She works at the library, volunteers in the schools, and drinks too much coffee while writing. Other books by Ms. Douglass include 'The Ninja Librarian' and 'A is for Alpine'.

Florey's Books welcomes artist Cindy De Losa as she exhibits her "Homes for the Homies".

***Sunday, Nov. 3rd, 2-6pm***

The 'Homes' are one of a kind shadowboxes depicting nostalgic places in Pacifica. Locations include: Sams's Castle, El Grano de Oro, Vallemar Station, Nick's, Winters, Salada Beach Cafe, Guerrero's Taqueria, Chit Chat at the Pier, and more!

See her site for more info and samples of past work:
http://homesforthehomies.com

About the artist:
Cynthia De Losa, Mexican-Italian, third generation native San Franciscan. Daughter of Joe De Losa, retired
Teamster and Connie De Losa, Interior designer. Born at Mary's Help Hospital on Clinton Park, November 5.
Inspired early in life by her Grandmother Juanita Romero, who instilled in her strong values, determination
and creativity.

While shopping at her corner store in Noe Valley she saw a bubble gum machine with individual "Homie"
figurines, she then purchased some shadow boxes and the IDEA was born.

Her style of Art showcases an event capturing the spirit of the "Homies", depicting her neighborhood and
places where she grew up and spent time. This media known as "Diorama" is similar to the "Niche concept",
popular in Mexican Folk Art. Cynthia brings this concept to life together with the "Homie" figurines and photo
backgrounds.

She has also owned the "One Stop Party Shop", worked as an Interior Designer and Property Stager. In addition,
she worked many years for United Airlines, which gave her the opportunity to travel the world.

Cynthia has a son, Alberto Alvarado and a granddaughter, Maria Juanita, the apple of her eye.

Cynthia thanks her Homegirls & Homeboys for joining her in this celebration of "Urban Culture and the Homies".

"Landscapes and Cycles" Book Event with Author Jim Steele, Oct. 20th, 2-4pm at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes author Jim Steele as he discusses his new book: "Landscapes and Cycles: An Environmentalist's Journey to Climate Skepticism"

***Sunday, Oct. 20th, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

For 25 years, as director of San Francisco State University’s Sierra Nevada Field Campus, Jim Steele has opened the eyes and ears of countless students to the magic of California’s Sierra Nevada. His first book, Landscapes and Cycles, An Environmentalist’s Journey to Climate Skepticism will likewise open your minds. It compares the effects of landscape changes, natural cycles and climate change on polar bears, whales, walruses, penguins, frogs, pika, butterflies and marine ecosystems. Although it is wise to think globally, all wildlife reacts locally and all regions of the earth have been behaving very differently from what a globally averaged statistic might suggest. Despite media horror stories, many species have benefitted from recent climate change. Those species that are struggling have invariably been affected by issues other than climate change and require very different remedies. Controlling our carbon footprints will never address the most pressing issues of habitat loss and watershed degradation. Landscapes and Cycles juxtaposes environmental optimism and with concern.

It celebrates the work of conservationists and scientists whose tireless efforts have enabled the full recovery of a great many species. On the other hand it presents withering criticism against the politicization of climate change and those who have hijacked key environmental issues to the detriment of good environmental stewardship. Steele highlights how faulty science and bad models have misguided critical conservation efforts and misrepresented conservation success. Most distressing Landscapes and Cycles reveals how global warming advocates have opposed appropriate conservation efforts simply because the concerned scientists did not blame climate change. Landscapes and Cycles demystifies both climate science and conservation science in a manner easily understood by everyone. In easily grasped terms Steele explains how natural cycles can cause abrupt climate change and extreme weather events and how those events affect wildlife. If we want to be good stewards of the environment, understanding those natural cycles are essential.

Florey's Books welcomes author Michael Castleman as he discusses his new mystery novel "Killer Weed"

***Saturday, Oct. 19th, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

While running for mayor of San Francisco, a former pot dealer and author of best-selling guides to growing weed is assassinated. Former newspaperman, Ed Rosenberg is hired to find out what happened to a tech billionaire’s birth mother who was a small-time marijuana dealer shot to death in Golden Gate Park in an unsolved 1968 murder. His research about the Haight-Ashbury’s tie-dyed past illuminates that storied era, and introduces him to a rogue’s gallery of aging hippies, who, he realizes, may have been involved in the candidate’s murder. Then someone starts shooting at him…..Killer Weed is a fast-paced, ingeniously plotted novel with characters so real you’ll want to turn on, tune in, and drop everything to reach the surprising, deeply satisfying conclusion.

About the Author:

Michael Castleman grew up in Lynbrook, a Long Island suburb of New York City. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa for the University of Michigan with a degree in English, and earned a Masters in journalism from UC Berkeley. He has lived in San Francisco since 1975. An award-winning medical journalist, he is the author of twelve consumer health and sexuality books. He has published three previous Ed Rosenberg novels.

"Vision for Life" Book Event and Workshop with Author Meir Schneider, Oct.5th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes author Meir Schneider as he discusses his book and vision improvement program "Vision for Life: Ten Steps to Natural Eyesight Improvement"

***Saturday, October 5th, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

In Vision for Life, natural health pioneer Meir Schneider shares ten essential principles of healthy vision discovered in his forty-year personal and professional journey. Born almost blind, Schneider taught himself to see and developed an innovative program of healing and recovery that has helped thousands of people regain and improve their health.

Vision for Life is packed with exercises for a natural eye health routine, which you can immediately incorporate into your life, and includes a set of eye chart posters to use together with the book. This program is not only strengthening but also restorative and deeply relaxing. You will learn how to reverse developing issues before they cause damage and how to remedy existing problems including near- and far-sightedness and lazy eye as well as cataracts, glaucoma, optic neuritis, detached retinas and tears, macular degeneration, and retinitis pigmentosa. Vision for Life is not only for people who see poorly and would like to improve their vision, but also for those with 20/20 vision who wish to maintain their perfect eyesight as they grow older.

About the Author:

Born blind to deaf parents, Schneider underwent a series of painful operations as a young child and was left with ninety-nine percent scar tissue on his eyes, resulting in his being declared incurably blind. At the age of seventeen, he discovered how to improve his vision from one percent to fifty-five percent of normal vision with the eye exercises presented in this book. Today Schneider drives a car, reads, and proves time and again that vision can and does improve with exercise. His contributions to the field of self-healing are recognized by alternative health practitioners and medical doctors alike. In 1980 Schneider founded the School for Self-Healing, a nonprofit center in San Francisco that offers educational programs through which people can improve their vision as well as other physical handicaps.

"That is the Question" Shakespeare Boardgame Event with Game Designer John Ahlbach, Tuesday Sept. 24th, 7pm!

Florey's Books welcomes local game creator John Ahlbach, and we invite you to join in and play his board game: "That is the Question: A Game of Shakespeare Knowledge".

***Tuesday, September 24th, 7pm***

About the game:

'That is the Question' is a fun journey through all things Shakespeare.

The game's 500 questions come with a multiple-choice option that players with less experience can use to level the playing field against those with more expertise. The questions cover the plots, language and characters of major and minor plays. They cover Shakespeare on stage and in film in our own time.

Knowledge and educated guessing do not always win in That is the Question. Luck must be with you, too, as you must land on the right spaces to win the two of each type of Character Card needed for victory.

So, when Juliet asks, "What satisfaction canst thou have tonight?", the answer is, play That is the Question with your friends or family!

About the author/creator:

John Ahlbach is a teacher at Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco. He wrote the 500 questions used in That is the Question: A Game of Shakespeare Knowledge. The game board and cards were designed by Mona Toft, a graphic artist in St. Paul , MN. Much of the profits from this game will go to Friends: The National Association of Young People Who Stutter, of which John is a co-founder.

About Ms. Nelson:

"Hold Fast: Tom Crean" Book Event with Author David Hirzel - Saturday, August 17th at Florey's!

Florey's Book Co. welcomes local author David Hirzel as he discusses his new book, "Hold Fast: Tom Crean with Shackleton's Endurance 1913-1916"

***Saturday, August 17th, 2-4pm***

From the author:

It gives me great pleasure to announce the official launch of my new book Hold Fast: Tom Crean with Shackleton's Endurance 1913-1916, at Florey's Books in Pacifica. Many of you will be familiar with my earlier book Sailor on Ice about this steadfast Irishman's adventures in the Antarctic with Robert Scott's assault on the South Pole in 1910.
In the days before radio communication, the explorers of the icy southern continent were on their own. When disaster strikes, you want a man like Crean in your team. When Shackleton set out to cross the Antarctic continent in 1914, he had with him this most durable and dependable men, a common man in uncommon circumstances, the one who pulled through no matter how daunting the odds.

My new book, Hold Fast continues Crean's story, into the far southern reaches of the sea, where the assault of the moving pack ice sank the ship and doomed the expedition. Unable to make shore, the men lived on the ice until it disintegrated. They made it to the shore of a deserted island, but someone would have to go for help. It meant an open-boat journey over 800 miles of the stormiest seas on earth, and a daring crossing through the high trackless wastes of a frozen island. The men to do it would have to face the deadliest dangers of their lives, and not flinch. Tom Crean was one of those men.
Hold Fast is a work of narrative nonfiction based on published and unpublished sources, and interviews with Crean's family, tells the story as seen through Crean's eyes and sharing his experiences as they unfold.

"That is the Question" Shakespeare Boardgame Event with Game Designer John Ahlbach, Tuesday August 13th, 7pm!

Florey's Books welcomes local game creator John Ahlbach, and we invite you to join in and play his board game: "That is the Question: A Game of Shakespeare Knowledge".

***Tuesday, August 13th, 7pm***

"The Captain and Mr. Shrode" Book Event with Author Tony Johnson, Saturday August 10th, 2-4pm!

Florey's Books welcomes author Tony Johnson as he discusses his book
"The Captain and Mr. Shrode".

***Saturday, August 10th, 2:00-4:00pm***

About the Book and Author:

During their two-and-a-half-year circumnavigation aboard the sloop Maverick, Tony Johnson and Terry Shrode survived a number of harrowing engagements with the forces of nature. In Tahiti, a midnight gale caused Maverick to fetch up on a dangerous coral reef. In Indonesia, faulty navigational charts, heavy winds and high seas led the crew to run the boat aground. And thirty miles from a safe landfall after a twenty-one day Atlantic crossing, water in the bilge triggered the discovery that the hull had begun to tear itself apart. Only a heroic effort by the skipper and first mate kept them from sinking within sight of land.

Along with tales of adventure, the Captain's chronicle contains accounts of natural wonders including orangutans in the wild, observed on a dreamlike jungle excursion up the Kumai River in Borneo, and the nighttime Arabian Sea glowing ghostly white from horizon to horizon, the result of a rare bloom of phosphorescent plankton.

Woven through the journal are revealing and sometimes surreal encounters with a host of fascinating characters including native guides, fellow cruisers, and would-be pirates. These cross-cultural experiences assume added poignancy in the period following the World Trade Center attack, when, despite the warnings of family and friends, Tony and Terry decide to carry on with their voyage through the heart of the Islamic world and fly the American flag.

Sections on Odysseus, Drake, Columbus, Plato, Socrates, bullfighting in Spain, Mediterranean geology, and Junior Walker and the All-Stars ensure that the book will satisfy the reader's wanderlust for cultural and intellectual, as well as nautical, adventure.

"Martyr of the Amazon" Book Event with Author Roseanne Murphy, Saturday July 27th, 2-4pm!

Florey's Book welcomes author Roseanne Murphy as she discusses her book "Martyr of the Amazon: The Life of Sister Dorothy Stang"
Sr. Murphy's colleagues Cheryl Joseph and Jim McGarry will also be guests.

***Saturday, July 27th 2:00-4:00pm***

About the Book:

The murder in 2005 of an American nun, Sister Dorothy Stang, focused the worlds attention on the plight of poor farmers in the Brazilian Amazon and their struggles against rapacious developers. Sister Dorothy had worked in Brazil for forty years. From a conventional nun in the pre-Vatican II era, she had developed a keen social conscience and, increasingly, a deep, mystical commitment to the integrity of Creation. These ideals combined in her advocacy for the rights of the poor and her defense of the imperiled rain forest. They also earned her the enmity of land-grabbing ranchers who repeatedly threatened her. ""All I ask,"" she wrote, ""is Gods grace to help me keep on this journey, fighting for the people to have a more egalitarian life and that we learn to respect Gods creation.""

About the Author:

Sister Roseanne Murphy attended Stanford University, Notre Dame University, and St. Joseph’s School of Nursing. She entered the convent, and went on to teach biology, general science, religion and English at her alma mater, Notre Dame High School, Belmont. Later she found her “true teaching home” at the College of Notre Dame (now Notre Dame de Namur University) where she remains to this day. Sr. Roseanne enjoyed teaching college students and serving as chair for the Behavioral Science Department for 37 years! She combined her classroom teaching with experiences in the community that included field trips to San Quentin and Agnews State Mental Hospital. Twice she won a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship and she was the first woman to teach at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park.
