"Sea Cutter" Event with Author Tim Davis, April 4th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Tim Davis, as he discusses his new book "Sea Cutter Book I: The Chronicles of Nathaniel Childe"

***Saturday, April 4th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

It's 1771 and I've just gotten a secret message from Father who -- all of New Bedford says -- went down with his ship in 1769. I know I promised Mother never to put to sea, but what's more important -- keeping a promise or finding Father? If you want to come with me, help me find a ship bound for the South Atlantic, and we'll search together for a legendary island, and Father.

But watch out for a smelly, slim, oily-looking sailor with a tattoo of a viper coiled around his arm. We're going to leave him far behind...

About the author:

Tim Davis got into trouble at age 12 for reading Treasure Island under his blankets by flashlight when he was supposed to be sleeping. When he grew up, he pursued his love of children’s literature by earning a PhD in English and teaching Children’s Literature at university. He left academia in order to move to the San Francisco Bay Area and teach elementary school under an emergency program that let college graduates teach if they worked in the inner city. Tim Davis still lives in the Bay Area with his family, and recently began writing a series of children’s books that he hopes will get some other kids in trouble for reading under the blankets with a flashlight.

Pacifica Culture Club! March 2015 Discussion Topic: Poverty in America

Florey's welcomes you to our culture discussion club!

***Wednesday, March 25th, 7:30-9:00pm***

A social discussion concerning class, the American Dream and the daily struggle of 45 million Americans living in poverty. "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much it is whether we provide enough for those who have little." – Franklin Roosevelt

Similar to a book club, Culture Club selects a monthly topic, and has a social group discussion. Books, movies, events and more are recommended to spur discussion and learning! Open to all, email with questions.

March's Topic Recommendations:

Non-Fiction – Nickeled and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich – Available at Florey's
There is a lot of great non-fiction related to poverty in America, this is just one suggestion but there are many others if you're interested in choosing one you prefer.

Non-Fiction Novel, Memoir - The Glass Castle – Available at Florey's
On the flipside there is not a lot of fiction about Poverty in America that I could find, the best one known is Grapes of Wrath. If you're up for the challenge I recommend it!

Movie - Pursuit of Happyness

Movie in Theaters – Macfarland USA, though not exactly about poverty, it does illustrate the struggle to rise above as poor, 'lower class' citizens of this country. (Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74eJaVQFybI )

Event - Volunteering/attending event for Project Homeless Connect

Articles – An America Divided http://www.theguardian.com/world/2006/feb/19/usa.paulharris

Drinks and light bites will be available! Feel free to bring a snack or a beverage to share!

"March to November" Event with Author Byddi Lee, March 21st at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Byddi Lee as she discusses her new novel "March to November".

***Saturday, March 21st, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

Five people. Eight months. Lives end. Lives begin.

March to November navigates the entangled points of view of Tracey Duggan and her circle of friends and foes in modern-day Belfast, Ireland as they struggle with bereavement, broken marriages, broken dreams and broken psyches.

All Tracey wants is a normal life. All she has, however, is violence and betrayal from those closest to her.

Can Tracey escape the pattern of destructive relationships that plague her? Will her new boyfriend Tommy decide to be right or be happy? Will her sister-in-law Molly find the strength to deal with her new situation? Will her brother, Dermot let go of his past and man up to his mistakes? Can Dermot’s lover, Sheila really have it all?

Belfast is not the city of bombs and bullets of their childhood, but it’s still full of trouble for these five as they alternately walk, run and stumble along the road toward a shocking finale.

About the Author:

Byddi Lee grew up in Armagh, Ireland, and moved to Belfast to study biology at Queen’s University when she was 18. She made Belfast her home for twenty-one years, teaching science and writing for pleasure. In 2002 she took a a sabbatical from teaching and traveled around the world for two years, writing blogs about her adventures as she went.

She returned to Ireland in 2004 and resumed teaching. In 2008 she and her husband moved to San Jose, California, where she made writing a full-time career. After the publication of her short story, Death of a Seannachai, she decided it was time to write March to November.

Besides being a novelist, Byddi is also a Master Gardener. She writes a blog on life as an Irish gardener and traveler living in California called, “We didn’t come here for the grass.” She also gives talks and classes on gardening.

"The Warm Kitchen" Event with Author Amy Fothergill, March 14th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author and chef Amy Fothergill , as she brings some treats and discusses her new book "The Warm Kitchen: Gluten-free Recipes Anyone Can Make and Everyone Will Love"

***Saturday, March 14th, 2-4pm***

About the Book:

You can do this. Even if you have limited cooking experience, Amy will walk you through each step of her recipes with detailed instructions, photos, and helpful tips to enable you to achieve delicious results.

Although this cookbook is advertised for the gluten-free community, it still stands as a valuable resource for anyone. Many of the recipes can be easily modified to include all-purpose flour in place of Amy's gluten-free substitutes, others are well suited for both gluten and non-gluten diets and shouldn't require any substitutions.

Amy knows from personal experience that omitting gluten from your diet can be a challenge. In this cookbook, she details the necessary steps to stocking a gluten-free pantry, making substitutions for other ingredients (such as dairy, eggs, and sugar) and cooking food everyone will love.

About the Author:

Amy Fothergill was trained at Cornell University s School of Hotel Administration. She never thought her culinary skills would be necessary to manage her family s special diet but has found her cooking knowledge has come in handy. Currently she is a cooking instructor, consultant, blogger, and writer. Her business, The Family Chef, encompasses her belief that meals should be prepared simply and with whole ingredients. Whether she s teaching others how to cook creatively to avoid gluten and other allergens or just to master the basics, Amy s experience of leading cooking demonstrations has taught her how to craft recipes with the ultimate goal of setting her customer up for success.
