Florey's Book Club: 'The Merry Spinster' Dec. 13th

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, December 13th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our December book, 'The Merry Spinster' by Mallory Ortberg.

About the book and author:

From Mallory Ortberg comes a collection of darkly mischievous stories based on classic fairy tales. Adapted from her beloved "Children's Stories Made Horrific" series, "The Merry Spinster" takes up the trademark wit that endeared Ortberg to readers of both The Toast and her best-selling debut Texts From Jane Eyre. The feature has become among the most popular on the site, with each entry bringing in tens of thousands of views, as the stories proved a perfect vehicle for Ortberg's eye for deconstruction and destabilization. Sinister and inviting, familiar and alien all at the same time, The Merry Spinster updates traditional children's stories and fairy tales with elements of psychological horror, emotional clarity, and a keen sense of feminist mischief.

Readers of The Toast will instantly recognize Ortberg's boisterous good humor and uber-nerd swagger: those new to Ortberg's oeuvre will delight in her unique spin on fiction, where something a bit mischievous and unsettling is always at work just beneath the surface.

Unfalteringly faithful to its beloved source material, The Merry Spinster also illuminates the unsuspected, and frequently, alarming emotional complexities at play in the stories we tell ourselves, and each other, as we tuck ourselves in for the night.

Bed time will never be the same.

Mallory Ortberg is the co-creator of the Toast and the author of the New York Times Bestseller Texts From Jane Eyre.

Florey's Book Club: 'In the Midst of Winter' Nov. 15th!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, November 15th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our November book, 'In the Midst of Winter' by Isabel Allende.

About the book:

In the Midst of Winter begins with a minor traffic accident--which becomes the catalyst for an unexpected and moving love story between two people who thought they were deep into the winter of their lives. Richard Bowmaster--a 60-year-old human rights scholar--hits the car of Evelyn Ortega--a young, undocumented immigrant from Guatemala--in the middle of a snowstorm in Brooklyn. What at first seems just a small inconvenience takes an unforeseen and far more serious turn when Evelyn turns up at the professor's house seeking help. At a loss, the professor asks his tenant Lucia Maraz--a 62-year-old lecturer from Chile--for her advice. These three very different people are brought together in a mesmerizing story that moves from present-day Brooklyn to Guatemala in the recent past to 1970s Chile and Brazil, sparking the beginning of a long overdue love story between Richard and Lucia. Exploring the timely issues of human rights and the plight of immigrants and refugees, the book recalls Allende's landmark novel The House of the Spirits in the way it embraces the cause of "humanity, and it does so with passion, humor, and wisdom that transcend politics" (Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post).

About the author:

Born in Peru and raised in Chile, Isabel Allende is the author of a number of bestselling and critically acclaimed books, including The House of the Spirits, Of Love and Shadows, Eva Luna, The Stories of Eva Luna, Paula, and The Japanese Lover. Her books have been translated into more than thirty-five languages and have sold more than 65 million copies worldwide. She is the recipient of the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, and she divides her time between California and Chile.

October 2018 Poetry at Florey's.

Florey's Books invites you to the final instance of our poetry series.

***Saturday, October 27th, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are Wendy Wolters and Dan Brady.

From Sherri:

Dear Poets and Lovers of Poetry,

The time has arrived to announce the final reading in the Poetry at Florey's reading series. For our grand finale, Aaron and I will welcome San Francisco poets Dan Brady and Wendy Wolters, whose vision and inspiration will be a wonderful way to end our seven years, sharing the good news of poetry, that have been so richly rewarding.

I hope you will consider joining us to hear Wendy and Dan's good news, to share your own at open mic (3 minutes, please), and to say goodbye. Feasting and celebrating with poets is surely among life's great pleasures! If you are able to, contributions of food and beverages for the table would be especially appreciated.

About the featured poets:

WENDY WOLTERS

During my childhood I had many fulfilling sensory experiences being outdoors in nature. There came about a deep sense of awe toward life during those years, and that feeling of wonderment is still easily kindled within me to this day. The combination of having had all those experiences, along with participation in plays which my mother directed - involving my siblings and I and some of our friends – planted the seeds underlying an eventual passion for reading aloud.

I remember a particular book of poems that I cherished reading early on, and later had an opportunity in high school to explore creative writing. It was when I moved to San Francisco in my early 30s and began to take part in open mic readings, that I more fully realized the satisfaction of expressing in words what moves my soul.

It has been my interest in learning about diverse philosophies, since I was a young adult, that’s led to an abiding sense of connection between the outer physical world and an inner world of imagination and possibility. Inspiration often moves my thoughts and curiosities about life into the realm of the heart, and its vast reservoir of feeling. I write as a means of expressing something that I find myself appreciating at a core level, am drawn to the power of hope, and much of my work is influenced by a belief in the uniqueness yet oneness of all life.

It is my joy and gratitude to share my poetry here at Florey’s, and to have been able to read and feature, as well, at Sacred Grounds and La Promenade in San Francisco, and in East Bay for the Alameda Island Poets.

DAN BRADY

I love writing; it’s great fun, good for the heart, mind and health. I’m fascinated by how words fit together, chime, rhyme and flow from one to the next. I write because I cannot be silent; how could one be in this world? I’ve a theory: the right set of words, presented in the right setting is one of the ways civilization evolves. I ever improve my craft and seek such words so, should the opportunity arise, I’ll present that which may transform my life and or the lives of others. Poetry explores of the formless as it becomes form; it is the art of channeling creation, making sense of what is beyond sense, and a calling as eternal as any answer.

When inspiration comes, I take dictation but poems take minutes or years to settle into shape.

Honored by small press publication and in contests, I’m in the Poet’s Eleven Series and S.F. Peace and Hope’s anthology. I’ve ties with the Bay Area Poet’s Coalition, the Haiku Poets of Northern California, led workshops, featured at venues in and around San Francisco and support the poetry community with an online open mic calendar. I curate the series at Sacred Grounds, known for Good food and fine poetry since 1972

Three of my books Orphan City, (i)n((s(i)gh)t) to;(r(io)t), and Haiku: Infolded Meaning are poetry collections.

Florey's Book Club: 'Racing the Devil' Oct. 25th!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, October 25th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our October book, 'Racing the Devil' by Charles Todd.

About the book:

In late June 1916, before the bloody Battle of the Somme, several English officers have a last drink before returning to the Front. Besides the war, they also have a passion for motorcars in common. Daring fate, they swear to meet in Paris a year after the war ends to celebrate their survival by racing motorcars from Paris to Nice.

In November 1919, five remaining officers set out for Nice. But in the hills high above the coast, one vehicle is nearly run off the twisting, fog-shrouded road, while another is sent over. No one saw the driver of the rogue motorcar.

A year later, in England, a local vicar driving along the Sussex coastline in a blinding rainstorm loses control and is killed. Was it an accident? Another set of tire tracks raises suspicions of something far darker, especially since he had borrowed the motorcar from a neighbor who had fought on the Somme.

Was this a case of mistaken identity, in some way connected to the rogue driver in the mountains above Nice? Or was the dead man actually the intended victim?

Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge discovers that there is an elusive killer here on the high chalk cliffs, one who shows no mercy, hunting his prey with a cunning learned in the trenches.

About the author:

Charles Todd is the New York Times bestselling author of the Inspector Ian Rutledge mysteries, the Bess Crawford mysteries, and two stand-alone novels. Among the honors accorded to the Ian Rutledge mysteries are the Barry Award and nominations for the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association’s Dilys Award, the Edgar and Anthony Awards in the U.S., and the John Creasey Award in the UK. A mother-and-son writing team, they live on the East Coast.

***Sunday, Oct. 14th, 2pm-4pm***

About the book:

True stories of real-life heroism. I react not knowing the outcome. Each experience is never the same. My brain scans the area before I go in to assess the situation. I notice as much detail as my brain can record, and then I react. All this happens in a millisecond!

About the author:

I knew from childhood that I had something inside me that seemed to care about the well being of human beings and wildlife. My mother, whom I love very much, would let me play in the hills of San Francisco full of trees, and open land full of wildlife. I learned to enjoy having wildlife around me, I began to care! I would also go to church and hear words of care and love toward nature and people from my father the Reverend, and other Pastors. As I grow in age I saw on television movies about heroes who were helping people and saving lives all of this experience had an profound effect on way I view life, and people. Later in my life I became a Boy Scout, a leader in my church, a nurse, a counselor, and a first responder.

Florey's Book Club: 'The World According to Garp' Sept. 27th!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, September 27th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our September book, 'The World According to Garp' by John Irving.

About the book:

This is the life and times of T. S. Garp, the bastard son of Jenny
Fields--a feminist leader ahead of her times. This is the life and death
of a famous mother and her almost-famous son; theirs is a world of sexual
extremes--even of sexual assassinations. It is a novel rich with "lunacy
and sorrow"; yet the dark, violent events of the story do not undermine a
comedy both ribald and robust. In more than thirty languages, in more than
forty countries--with more than ten million copies in print--this novel
provides almost cheerful, even hilarious evidence of its famous last line:
"In the world according to Garp, we are all terminal cases."

About the author:

John Irving has been nominated for a National Book Award three times--winning once, in 1980, for the novel The World According to Garp. In 1992, Mr. Irving was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma. In 2000, he won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Cider House Rules--a film with seven Academy Award nominations.

See You At The 7- with author Vanessa Garcia

Florey's Books welcomes author Vanessa Garcia as she discusses her book, "See You At The 7: Stories From the Bay Area's Last Original Mile House".

***Saturday, Sept. 22nd, 2pm-4pm***

About the book and author:

A new book on 7 Mile House, Brisbane's oldest establishment and building celebrates its intriguing history and how it came to be everyone’s favorite home “in the middle of nowhere”

In 2004, Vanessa Garcia purchased the 7 Mile House, a dark dive in the outskirts of Brisbane and “in the middle of nowhere,” unaware of its history, the countless stories contained within its walls—and that, for the better part of the last 160 years, it was home to thousands of locals and travelers of all colors and persuasions.

Vanessa’s first realizations that the place had any historical importance was a faded photograph of the bar, attributed to the late 19th century. Who were the people in the photo? Were their descendants still alive? And how did Albert Flynn, from whom she had bought the restaurant and who people said had worked for notorious bookmaker Ronald “The Cigar” Sacco, acquire it?

Over the years, Vanessa tried—unsuccessfully—to piece together fragments and information about her restaurant, to fill in unanswered gaps and mysteries about 7 Mile House, while indefatigably breathing back life into her fledgling business.

It was a fourteen-year long journey that culminates this year with 7 Mile House’s 160th anniversary and the launch of Vanessa’s self-published book “See You At The 7 - Stories From the Bay Area's Last Original Mile House.”

In this first-ever comprehensive narrative on “The 7,” as it came to be called in the 1950s, Vanessa traces its roots from 1858, when it began as a toll gate carved along the bayside of San Bruno mountain; to a saloon, hotel, and wheelman’s exchange in the early 1900s; to an illegal gambling den in the years leading up to Prohibition; to a melting pot of carefree workers from Southern Pacific Railroad in the 1940s and S.E. Rykoff in the 1980s; to the largest illegal sports gambling syndicate West of the Mississippi; to the family and dog-friendly restaurant, sports bar, and live music venue that it is today.

Culled from weeks’ worth of interviews, and many hours in the archives of San Mateo, San Francisco, and Sacramento Counties and photographic collections, the finished product is a richly-illustrated, deeply personal book about how an extraordinary place has withstood the fickle tides of history while remaining true to its essence: a home to come back to when the days are just too rough—or when hearts are exploding with a joy that must be shared among people you choose to call family.

The book is co-authored by award-winning editor Regina Abuyuan, with a foreword by San Francisco Chronicle columnist Carl Nolte (Native Son).

Albert Drosoph's Field Guide to Punctuation -with author Jenny Hammer, Sept. 6th at Florey's.

Florey's Books welcomes author Jenny Hammer as she discusses her book, "Albert Drosoph's Field Guide to Punctuation For the Observant, the Dismissive, the Curious, the Confused".

***Thursday, Sept. 6th, 7pm-9pm***

About the book:

Using the trope of the marks as living creatures and weaving together style, typography, science, and dry humor, Albert Drosoph’s Field Guide to Punctuation untangles the mysteries of punctuation in a non-threatening way. Rather than wanting to shrink from encounters with these marks in anything read, or rather than perseverating about where and how to use them in anything written, readers of this book will intentionally seek out the marks and observe, with a new appreciation, what and how they are doing.

This book will surely change your mind even if you’ve never considered these tiny marks with anything even approaching interest. After reading Drosoph, you will be interested and informed, and you’ll never look at a mark of punctuation in the same way again.

Albert Drosoph’s Field Guide to Punctuation distills extraordinary research of writing styles, conventions, and history into a handy assistant. Take it with you whenever you venture into the worlds of reading or writing; you’ll find it indispensable.

About the author:

Jenny Hammer has been teaching English to speakers of other languages for over half of her life. An immigrant to California from the state of New York, she currently lives in the East Bay.

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event!

***Saturday, August 25th, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are Judy Wells and Dale Jensen.

From Sherri:

Dear Poetry Community,

It's time to invite you to join me, Aaron, and our featured poets Judy Wells and Dale Jensen, for a celebration of the spoken word. I hope you'll consider joining us to hear these seasoned east bay poets.

It is always especially appreciated if you are able to bring a snack or drink for the table; feasting with poets and poetry lovers is a particular pleasure! And, of course and as always, you are invited to bring your own poetry to share at open mic (3 minutes, please).

---Special note: There will be no poetry reading in September---

About the featured poets:

JUDY WELLS

Judy Wells was born in San Francisco and educated at Stanford and UC Berkeley. Her 11th poetry collection, The Glass Ship (Sugartown), completes her trilogy of Irish-themed works, including Everything Irish and Call Home (Scarlet Tanager Books). Dear Phebe, a poetry and prose collection about her Dickinson ancestors, three sisters who traveled from Massachusetts to California in the 1860s to establish new lives, is forthcoming from Sugartown. Her poetry has recently appeared in Veils, Halos, and Shackles: International Poetry on the Oppression and Empowerment of Women; San Francisco Peace and Hope; California Quarterly; Marin Poetry Center Anthology; and Stanford Alumni Magazine. KPFA’s Nina Serrano has recorded Judy reading from The Glass Ship, Little Lulu Talks with Vincent Van Gogh, and The Old People Monologues. Her website is www.judywellspoet.com.

DALE JENSEN

Dale Jensen was born in Oakland, California, graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1971, and received a master’s degree in experimental psychology from the University of Toronto in 1973, with which he said goodbye to academia forever. In 1974, he embarked on a career with Social Security that lasted until 1999, when he took early retirement. He lives in Berkeley and is married to the poet Judy Wells.
Dale’s poetry, which is heavily influenced by the Surrealists and such cut-up writers as William Burroughs and Brion Gysin, has appeared in such magazines, journals, and anthologies as Talisman, Lost andFound Times, Ur-Vox, Poetry East, Inkblot, Convolvulus, Dirigible, and many others. He published and edited the experimental poetry magazine Malthus from 1986 through 1989 and continues to occasionally publish books through Malthus Press. He also has published seven books and three chapbooks of poetry: Thebes(1991), Bar Room Ballads (1992), The Troubles (1993), Twisted History (1999), Purgatorial (2004), Cyclone Fence (2007), Oedipus’ First Lover (2009), Auto Bio (2010), Yew Nork (2014), and Amateur Mythology(2017).

Florey's Book Club: 'The Murder of Roger Ackroyd' August 23rd!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, August 23rd, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our August book, 'The Murder of Roger Ackroyd' by Agatha Christie.

About the book:

Roger Ackroyd knew too much. He knew that the woman he loved had poisoned her brutal first husband. He suspected also that someone had been blackmailing her. Then, tragically, came the news that she had taken her own life with an apparent drug overdose.

However the evening post brought Roger one last fatal scrap of information, but before he could finish reading the letter, he was stabbed to death. Luckily one of Roger's friends and the newest resident to retire to this normally quiet village takes over--none other than Monsieur Hercule Poirot.

About the author:

Agatha Christie is the most widely published author of all time, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. Her books have sold more than a billion copies in English and another billion in a hundred foreign languages. She died in 1976 after a prolific career spanning six decades.

July 2018 Poetry at Florey's.

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event!

***Saturday, July 28th, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are Marvin R. Hiemstra and Brian Martens.

From Sherri:

To all who love poetry,

Now that our independence has been properly celebrated, I hope you'll be in the mood to join Aaron and me at Florey's, your long-time independent book store, for our July poetry reading. We will welcome Marvin R. Hiemstra and Brian Martens, who will share their poetic whimsy and passion with us.

If you are able to, it is always so very much appreciated if you can bring a drink or snack for the table, and, as always, you are invited to bring your own poetry to share at open mic (3 minutes, please).

About the featured poets:

MARVIN R. HIEMSTRA

A jubilant Leo born in a summer thunder storm on the Iowa Prairie and polished at the Iowa Writers Workshop by Donald Justice, Marvin R. Hiemstra’s publications include Dream Tees – a Pulitzer Prize in Poetry nominee, In Deepest USA – a droll CD, French Kiss Destiny - - a DVD filmed in three whimsical San Francisco locations and Poet Wrangler – another Pulitzer Prize in Poetry collection nominee.

Marvin publishes and performs around the world with a three week triumph at Edinburgh Festival Fringe which Leslie Hills at The Scotsman noted, “Marvin R. Hiemstra’s A Turquoise Coyote Under Your Pillow conjures up true moments and personalities in a bright-humored performance: intense, refreshing theatre.” “Rich humor, high-wire poetics, and deeply-felt emotion fill Marvin’s work.” – Shawn Pittard, The Great American Pinup. “French Kiss Destiny sets new standards for poetry in our times.” – David Partch, Rattle, “It’s the laughing and thinking at the same time that I love when I read Hiemstra’s work.” -- Kate McDonald, London Times. “Marvin R. Hiemstra’s performance blasts bits of Victorian music hall, kyogen, Jungian identity transfers, and red-hot shamanism into one very happy celebration.” – Ernst Budde, Universitat Bremen.

A memoir collection of anecdotes, Raven Knows: Each Smile is Unique, from Marvin’s colorful life will appear in 2019.

BRIAN MARTENS

I have always been a poet according to my teachers and mentors, and I thought it was a hobby until I realized I was a shadow poet and it was time to step into my passion.

In the fall of 2017 I declared myself a poet and writer, and committed to have a book of poetry published by the end of 2018. The Universe conspired to accomplish this and Fernwood Press is publishing my first book in 2018. The book will be mostly Haiku and a few other favorite poems. I learned Haiku from my work with Angeles Arrien over seven years.

Now, I mostly write poetry concerned with the “ Human Condition”, and such topics as Awareness, Transformation, and Deep Intuition. I seek to inspire and motivate people, with my articles, podcast, and poetry to recognize their own deep creative spirit and to express that to the world whether that is raising children, cooking a meal, or growing a garden. I believe everything we do on earth is a creative act, and being creative is an act of self-love.

Florey's Book Club: 'Killers of the Flower Moon' July 26th!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, July 26th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our July book, 'Killers of the Flower Moon' by David Grann.

About the book:

In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe.
Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. One of her relatives was shot. Another was poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more and more Osage were dying under mysterious circumstances, and many of those who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered.
As the death toll rose, the newly created FBI took up the case, and the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to try to unravel the mystery. White put together an undercover team, including a Native American agent who infiltrated the region, and together with the Osage began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history.

About the author:

David Grann is a staff writer at The New Yorker and the best-selling author of The Lost City of Z, which was chosen as one of the best books of the year by The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other publications and has been translated into more than twenty-five languages. He is also the author of The Devil and Sherlock Holmes. His work has garnered several honors for outstanding journalism, including a George Polk Award.

Florey's Book Club: 'The Portrait of a Lady' June 21st!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, June 21st, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our June book, 'The Portrait of a Lady' by Henry James.

About the book:

An undisputed masterpiece, The Portrait of a Lady is arguably James's most popular work, and certainly the finest of his early novels. It focuses on Isabel Archer, a young, intelligent, and spirited American girl, determined to relish her first experience of Europe. She rejects two eligible suitors in her fervent commitment to liberty and independence, declaring that she will never marry. Thanks to the generosity of her devoted cousin Ralph, she is free to make her own choice about her destiny. Yet in the intoxicating worlds of Paris, Florence, and Rome, her fond illusions of self-reliance are twisted by the machinations of her friends and apparent allies. What had seemed to be a vista of infinite promise steadily closes around her and becomes instead a "house of suffocation."
Portrait of a Lady is at once a dramatic Victorian tale of betrayal and a wholly modern psychological study of a woman caught in a web of relations she only comes to understand too late.

About the author:

Henry James (1843-1916) spent his early life in America but often traveled with his celebrated family to Europe. After briefly attending Harvard, he began to contribute both criticism and tales to magazines. Later, he visited Europe and began Roderick Hudson. Late in 1875, he settled in Paris, where he met Turgenev, Flaubert, and Zola and wrote The American. In 1876, he moved to London, where two years later he achieved international fame with Daisy Miller. His other famous works include The Portrait of a Lady (1881), The Princess Casamassma (1886), The Wings of the Dove (1902), and The Golden Bowl (1904). In 1915, a few months before his death, he became a British subject.
