Florey's Book Club: 'The Portrait of a Lady' June 21st!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, June 21st, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our June book, 'The Portrait of a Lady' by Henry James.

About the book:

An undisputed masterpiece, The Portrait of a Lady is arguably James's most popular work, and certainly the finest of his early novels. It focuses on Isabel Archer, a young, intelligent, and spirited American girl, determined to relish her first experience of Europe. She rejects two eligible suitors in her fervent commitment to liberty and independence, declaring that she will never marry. Thanks to the generosity of her devoted cousin Ralph, she is free to make her own choice about her destiny. Yet in the intoxicating worlds of Paris, Florence, and Rome, her fond illusions of self-reliance are twisted by the machinations of her friends and apparent allies. What had seemed to be a vista of infinite promise steadily closes around her and becomes instead a "house of suffocation."
Portrait of a Lady is at once a dramatic Victorian tale of betrayal and a wholly modern psychological study of a woman caught in a web of relations she only comes to understand too late.

About the author:

Henry James (1843-1916) spent his early life in America but often traveled with his celebrated family to Europe. After briefly attending Harvard, he began to contribute both criticism and tales to magazines. Later, he visited Europe and began Roderick Hudson. Late in 1875, he settled in Paris, where he met Turgenev, Flaubert, and Zola and wrote The American. In 1876, he moved to London, where two years later he achieved international fame with Daisy Miller. His other famous works include The Portrait of a Lady (1881), The Princess Casamassma (1886), The Wings of the Dove (1902), and The Golden Bowl (1904). In 1915, a few months before his death, he became a British subject.

May 2018 Poetry at Florey's.

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event!

***Saturday, May 26th, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are Tony Press and Jacki Rigoni.

From Sherri:

Dear Poets and Poetry Lovers,

In the merry month of May, we'll be celebrating the language of poetry at Florey's Book Company. Please consider joining Aaron and me as we welcome poets Tony Press and Jacki Rigoni, who are looking forward to meeting you, and sharing their work.

I also invite you to bring your own work to read at open mic (3 minutes, please), and, if you are able, a snack or beverage for the table.

About the featured poets:

TONY PRESS

Tony Press tries to pay attention. Sometimes he does. And sometimes, when he does, it leads to words on the page. Equinox and Solstice, an e-chapbook of his poems, hit the virtual world last year, courtesy of the journal Right Hand Pointing. He claims two Pushcart nominations, about 25 criminal trials, and 12 years in a single high school classroom. He lives over the hill, in beautiful Brisbane.

Since 2005, his poems have appeared in such fun places as Spitball; Turning Wheel; The Lake; 34th Parallel; Inkwell; Verse Wisconsin; Misty Mountain; Stare’s Nest; Grey Sparrow; Peacock Journal, and more.

He also writes fiction and his story collection Crossing the Lines is available in this very bookstore (other places, too, but we are here, tonight).

JACKI RIGONI

Jacki Rigoni writes within the found spaces of single parenting her three children in the San Francisco Bay area. She has an M.A. in English from UC Berkeley. A finalist for the 2018 Francine Ringold Award for New Writers, her poems appear or are forthcoming in Nimrod International Journal, Moon City Review, Poems-For-All, and her website, WomanUprising.com. An award-winning Creative Director and Copywriter by profession, Jacki’s other writing can be found on TV and the back of snack packaging.

Backpocket Crosswords -Book event with author Joanne Shwed, May 5th at Florey's.

Florey's Books welcomes local author Joanne Shwed as she discusses her book, "Backpocket Crosswords: Handmade Puzzles".
It's also Joanne's 65th birthday party!

***Saturday, May 5th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

Joanne Shwed has created these 24 handmade puzzles with common words and user-friendly clues. This book is dedicated to the Radiation Oncology Department at Seton Medical Center (Daly City, California). While Joanne and her husband Tom Ekkens waited for his radiation treatments, they (and others in the waiting room) worked on the clues, which seemed to calm their nerves, raise their spirits, and even get a couple of laughs.

About the author:

Joanne Shwed and Tom Ekkens have lived in Pacifica since 1989. Through her business, Backspace Ink, she has provided editing and publishing services to authors since 1985. She has written several short stories and essays, some of which have won writing awards. Joanne (and friends) love to play music and, for 25 years, they volunteered for Bread & Roses, which provides entertainment to “shut-ins” in nursing and convalescent homes and hospitals.

April 2018 Poerty at Florey's

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event!

***Saturday, April 28th, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are Patrice Haan and Sherri Rose-Walker.

From Sherri:

Dear Community of Poets and Those Who Love Poetry,

We have entered the days of National Poetry Month! I hope you will be reading, writing and listening to poetry all month long, and reciting it at the slightest provocation! It's a wonderful time to surprise your partner, your kids, your neighbors, or the grocery clerk with some poetic moments.

And if you have any time left over, I'd like to invite you to join Aaron and me for this month's evening of poetry at Florey's Book Company. Patrice Haan, Celtic harper, singer, song writer and poet, and I, will be your features, celebrating the poetics of language and of sound. We'll also give a nod to Shakespeare's birthday (the 23rd, as near as can be surmised), so if you have anything inspired by or celebrating the Bard, do bring it along. As always, I also invite you to bring your own work to share at open mic (3 minutes, please), and ask you to bring drinks or snacks for the table, if you can.

About the featured poets:

PATRICE HAAN

Patrice Haan (Oakland CA) is a harper, singer, songwriter, composer and wordsmith, devoted to the healing presence of listening.

More and more I turn to poetry and lyrics as a source of comfort, of discovery, of deep communication. I’m interested in words that don’t sell but compel, that don’t repress but reveal, that don’t slight but invite. I’m interested in mystery, beauty, playfulness, grief, longing, and outrage – the whole megilah.

I love that language breathes when it is read or recited. Like life, like singing, we enter experience by breath.

And I love that poetry and lyrics require and invite listening. It is my conviction that listening will save us.

I’ve been writing all my life and actively composing for over 20 years. In recent years, because of my increased dedication to songwriting, I decided to use harp to add a new dimension to my poetry.

I have had poems published in San Francisco Peace & Hope, We’Moon, North Coast Literary Review. I am so honoured to return to Florey’s Books Poetry Series.

Visit Patrice’s sites at www.patricehaan.com, www.leftoverdreams.com and www.healingmuses.org.

SHERRI ROSE-WALKER

Sherri Rose-Walker is a life-long poet who wrote her first poem at the age of seven. Her poetry is principally concerned with deepening the inner life of the Feminine, and seasons of the soul. Her work has been published in the We'Moon datebook and wall calendars (most recently 2018), Bay Area Poet's Seasonal Review, San Francisco Peace and Hope, Poetalk, and Marin Poetry Center Anthologies, among others, and her chapbooks Two Trees and Celtic Ray. Three of her poems have been made into songs by the San Francisco ensemble, Devi Vaani (www.devivaani.org). She was featured in an online series by Jean Bartlett (www.bartlettbiographies.com),and hosts a monthly poetry reading in Pacifica (floreysbookco@yahoo.com). Florey's Book Club: 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' April 26th!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, April 26th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our April book, 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' by John Fowles.

About the book:

The scene is the village of Lyme Regis on Dorset's Lyme Bay..."the largest bite from the underside of England's out-stretched southwestern leg." The major characters in the love-intrigue triangle are Charles Smithson, 32, a gentleman of independent means & vaguely scientific bent; his fiancée, Ernestina Freeman, a pretty heiress daughter of a wealthy & pompous dry goods merchant; & Sarah Woodruff, mysterious & fascinating...deserted after a brief affair with a French naval officer a short time before the story begins. Obsessed with an irresistible fascination for the enigmatic Sarah, Charles is hurtled by a moment of consummated lust to the brink of the existential void. Duty dictates that his engagement to Tina must be broken as he goes forth once again to seek the woman who has captured his Victorian soul & gentleman's heart.

About the author:

John Fowles (1926-2005) was educated at Oxford and subsequently lectured in English at universities in Greece and the UK. The success of his first novel, The Collector, published in 1963, allowed him to devote all his time to writing. His books include the internationally acclaimed and bestselling novels The Magus, The French Lieutenant's Woman, and Daniel Martin. Fowles spent the last decades of his life on the southern coast of England in the small harbor town of Lyme Regis.

Debussy's Paris - Book event with author Catherine Kautsky, Apr. 11th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes author and pianist Catherine Kautsky as she discusses her book, "Debussy's Paris: Piano Portraits of the Belle Époque". She will also perform some related piano selections.

***Wednesday, April 11th, 7pm***

About the book:

Claude Debussy's exquisite piano works have captivated generations with their dreamlike atmosphere and mysterious soundscapes.Written in Paris at the height of the Belle Époque, the music creates a soundtrack for Parisians' enjoyment of such delights as clowns, mermaids, eccentric dances, and the dark tales of Edgar Allan Poe. Debussy's Paris: Piano Portraits of the Belle Époque explores how key works reflect not only the most appealing and innocent aspects of Paris but also more disquieting attitudes of the time such as racism, colonial domination, and nationalistic hostility. Debussy left no avenue unexplored, and his piano works present a sweeping overview of the passions, vices, and obsessions of the era. Pianist Catherine Kautsky reveals little-known elements of Parisian culture and weaves the music, the man, the city, and the era into an indissoluble whole. Her portrait will delight anyone who has ever been entranced by Debussy's music or the city that inspired it.

About the author:

Catherine Kautsky is chair of keyboard at Lawrence University and has been lauded by the New York Times as "a pianist who can play Mozart and Schubert as though their sentiments and habits of speech coincided exactly with hers." Visit
https://www.debussysparis.com/ to enjoy Kautsky's performance of many of Debussy's works, as well as additional artworks, poems, and primary source materials from this book.

The San Pedro Creek Watershed Coalition is pleased to announce this speaking engagement by Gavin Pretor-Pinney who is on tour from his home in England. He will be here on Tuesday, April 10th at the Pacifica Community Center from 7:00-8:30pm.

Learn to become a cloudspotter. Learn to read the sky. In this entertaining and revealing talk, Gavin Pretor-Pinney will show you how to recognize distinctive cloud formations from the common Cumulus to the rare and fleeting ‘fluctus’ cloud. Showing stunning images from around the world by members of the Cloud Appreciation Society, Gavin will demonstrate the value of engaging with the sky. You will find out why cloudspotting is the perfect antidote to the pressures of the digital world. Looking up will never be the same again!

With over 44,000 members in 120 countries around the world, the Cloud Appreciation Society exists to unite people who believe that the sky is the most dynamic, evocative and poetic of nature's displays.

Based in the UK, Gavin Pretor-Pinney is author of the bestselling Cloudspotter's Guide and Cloud Collector's Handbook. His third book, The Wave Watcher's Companion, won the Royal Society Winton Prize for Science Books. A TED Global speaker, Gavin has presented television for the BBC and Channel 4, and is a Visiting Fellow at the University of Reading, UK. He is co-founded the Idler, a magazine that argues for the importance of downtime for creativity.

March 2018 Poetry at Florey's.

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event!

***Saturday, March 31st, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are Dave and Chappell Holt.

From Sherri:

Dear Friends in Poetry,

By the time we meet again, it will be spring, and our clocks adjusted! So, I'd like to invite you to come to Florey's Books for an early spring evening celebrating the creative imagination. We will welcome poets and musicians Chappell and Dave Holt who will take us in new, and resonant directions. I hope you'll consider joining us.

As always, you are invited to bring your own work to read at open mic. I ask you to limit your offering to three minutes, as a courtesy to other poets, and to Aaron Schlieve, our host, who puts in a long day in order to make his store available to us. If you are in doubt about how long it takes to read that poem or three "short" ones, time yourself. The results may surprise you!

If you can, please consider bringing a snack or drink for the refreshment table. I'm sure we can all survive a couple of hours without food or drink, but it does make our break a whole lot more enjoyable with something to sip or munch. I do want to thank all of you who consistently help out in this way; your generosity is greatly appreciated!

About the featured poets:

Chappell & Dave Holt, “The Jazzy side of Americana”

Chappell & Dave Holt are singer/songwriters who with piano, guitar and voices offer an unusual musical statement – a crossroads where jazz, blues, folk and gospel meet to create something both familiar and new, traditional and unconventional. Chappell, who began to explore merging poetry with music in songwriting, has performed extensively, written and recorded for independent films, and was an in-demand studio singer. Dave, born in Toronto of Irish/English and Ojibwe Indian ancestry, moved to California, and graduated from SF State University’s Creative Writing program (B.A. ‘93, M.A. ‘95). He’s won several poetry prizes, including a Literary/Cultural Arts award for his book Voyages to Ancestral Islands, and is included in four anthologies, most notably, Red Indian Road West: Native American Poetry from California, and Descansos: Words from the Wayside, where his poem received a Pushcart Prize nomination. He often reads and performs his poetry accompanied by Ojibwe drum or keyboard, and with Chappell on guitar and vocals.

'The Right Path' - Getting Your Affairs in Order, March 24th at Florey's!

Florey's Book Co. invites you to 'The Right Path'.

***Saturday, March 24th, 11am-12noon***

'The Right Path' - Getting Your Affairs in Order
A FREE pre-need seminar on final life arrangements.
Presented by Nina Terheyden on behalf of Olivet Memorial Park.

From Nina:

Please join me as we discuss all of the benefits of Before Need Arrangements. This isn't everyone's favorite discussion, but there are many things that need to be done when a person passes away. Prearranging for yourself or a loved one will take away the stress that many feel while trying to figure out what needs to be done after a death has occurred. There are even special arrangements for our First Responders, should one fall in the line of duty. Olivet Memorial Park offers many different solutions for your end of life needs. The presentation is about 30 minutes long and then there will be a question and answer session after.

About Nina:

Nina Terheyden is a resident of Pacifica of 15 years, with her husband and children. She has taught Sunday school for a year at Good Shepherd Church, was an art volunteer at Cabrillo School while her children attended school there and has volunteered for numerous other activities in the community. She is currently a member of Pacifica's Chamber of Commerce and is looking forward to more opportunities to serve our community.

Florey's Book Club: 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' March 15th!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, March 15th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our February book, 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' by John Fowles.

'Free the Bear' Book Event with Author CD Spensley, Feb. 24th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author CD Spensley as they discusses their new novel, "Free the Bear".

***Saturday, February 24th, 2-3pm***

About the Book:

What if six months after the 2016 election, California secedes from the union and promptly releases the Jerry Garcia virus on the Pentagon, appropriating the U.S. nuclear arsenal? Oops! Somebody’s been asleep at the wheel for years, because California is now three decades ahead of the Feds technologically on land, sea, air, and even in space.

This is not Calexit. This is FREE THE BEAR!

In this first installment of speculative fiction meets literary fiction, utopian ideas lead, artificial intelligence advises, and human foibles continue to mess things up. The story plays out against a backdrop of U.S. treachery and the current direction the world is headed.

An ingenious chaos theorist and his team of Silicon Valley scientists withhold key discoveries from the Feds, aided by an ally that nobody saw coming. What? An AI that meditates? The fledging nation wages a bloodless secession, while a million gamers direct roving, benevolent telefactors (aka drones) to keep the Feds at bay. Quirky “Happy Camps” delight captured U.S. soldiers with a taste of California life. (“Please don’t send me back to the Feds!”)

Utopia? Dystopia? You decide. This science fiction tale will have even the most cynical U.S. citizens waving their Free the Bear flag!

Florey's Book Club: 'East of the Mountains' February 15th!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, February 15th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our February book, 'East of the Mountains' by David Guterson.

About the book:

It is mid-October, 1997, harvest time in the Columbia Basin of central Washington state, a rich apple- and pear-growing region. Ben Givens, recently widowed, is a retired heart surgeon, once admired for his steadiness of hand, his precision, his endurance. He has terminal colon cancer. While Ben does not readily accept defeat, he is determined to avoid suffering rather than engage it. And so, accompanied by his two hunting dogs, he sets out through the mythic American West-sage deserts, yawning canyons, dusty ranches, vast orchards-on his last hunt. The main issues for Ben as a doctor had been tactical and so it would be with his death. But he hadn't considered the persuasiveness of memory-the promise he made to his wife Rachel, the love of his life, during World War II. Or life's mystery. On his journey he meets a young couple who are "forever," a drifter offering left-handed advice that might lessen the pain, a veterinarian with a touch only a heart surgeon would recognize, a rancher bent on destruction, a migrant worker who tests Ben's ability to understand. And just when he thinks there is no turning back, nothing to lose that wasn't lost, his power of intervention is called upon and his very identity tested. Full of humanity, passion, and moral honesty, East of the Mountains is a bold and beautiful novel of personal discovery.

About the author:

David Guterson is the author of a collection of short stories, The Country Ahead of Us, the Country Behind; Family Matters: Why Homeschooling Makes Sense; Snow Falling on Cedars, which won the 1995 PEN/Faulkner Award, the Pacific Northwest Bookseller Association Award, and was an international bestseller; and the national bestseller East of the Mountains.

January 2018 Poetry at Florey's.

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event!

***Saturday, January 27th, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are Laura Davis and Rosemary Ybarra-Garcia

From Sherri:

New Year Greetings to You All!

Once more, a fresh new year has rolled around, and I hope that now, at the threshold, it looks filled with possibility and poetry for you. I'm pleased to announce our first reading of the year, and hope you will consider joining us. Our featured poets, Rosemary Ybarra-Garcia and Laura Davis will offer us their fresh perspective as our poetic sustenance for the month.

A NOTE: Last season, I acquiesced to a suggestion that we do open mic first, followed by the break, and features. Upon reflection, I've decided to return to the original show flow of features first, break, and then open mic. My apologies for any confusion this flagrant tampering with the program might have caused!

What remains the same is that I so much appreciate your help with providing snacks, drinks or supplies (plates, napkins, cutlery, etc.) for the table. Anything you are able to do is marvelous, and if not this time, perhaps another time!

As always, you are invited to bring your own, or a favorite poet's work to read at open mic. I ask that you limit your reading to 3 minutes (and this includes anything you want to say to introduce the work). It's my agreement with Aaron Schlieve, our generous host, to wrap up the evening by 9:30 or before, so the courtesy of observing time limits is greatly appreciated.

About the featured poets:

LAURA DAVIS

Laura E. Davis is the author of Braiding the Storm (Finishing Line, 2012). Her poems have appeared in Tinderbox, Pedestal Magazine, Luna Luna, and Corium, among others, and anthologized in Bared and The Doll Collection. Laura is a freelance writer in San Francisco, where she lives with her partner and son.

ROSEMARY YBARRA-GARCIA

Rosemary Ybarra-Garcia is an educator and a life-long poet. Her work is included in Lighthouse Point: An Anthology of Santa Cruz Writers, New to North America: Writing by Immigrants, Their Children and Grandchildren, California Quarterly and Poetry Quarterly, among others. She has read for women's studies classes and many special presentations.

Florey's welcomes you to our discussion group!

***Thursday, January 25th, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

We will be meeting to discuss the topic: Masculinity, Femininity, and Western Cultures.

From Nico:

I've been doing a lot of reading on childhood development in both boys and girls. I've also read a few books on Eastern Culture religions and philosophies. A theme I seem to be noticing more and more is that the eastern cultures are much more comfortable with teaching boys "feminine" skills and vice versa for girls.

I don't know how to pinpoint exactly what I want to talk about with this topic, but I can tell you the situation that sparked my interest for it: I held a tournament for my classroom, and one 4th grade student managed to make it all the way to the finals. All he had to do was beat the same 6th grader he beat earlier in the tournament in order to win it all. He ends up losing in an upset and immediately starts sobbing.

I was raised to embrace and understand my emotions; there was never a need to hide. So as I walked back with this student to the classroom I told him "Its OK to feel this sadness right now. There is the thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat. You're experiencing the agony side of the coin. From there, you can either sulk, or get better." Once we get into the classroom, my aide sees him crying and she yells out "Oh Jeez, Jaden really? man up!"

Questions to consider

- Any moments in your life where you were asked to act more like your gender?
- Is there any harm to comments like "man up!" or "that's not very ladylike"
- Is there anything the west can learn from the east?

I hope to hear an array of experiences in this discussion. I look forward to seeing you all on the 25th!

Florey's Book Club: 'Blindness' January 18th!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, January 18th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our January book, 'Blindness' by Jose Saramago.

About the book:

A city is hit by an epidemic of "white blindness" which spares no one. Authorities confine the blind to an empty mental hospital, but there the criminal element holds everyone captive, stealing food rations and raping women. There is one eyewitness to this nightmare who guides seven strangers--among them a boy with no mother, a girl with dark glasses, a dog of tears--through the barren streets, and the procession becomes as uncanny as the surroundings are harrowing. A magnificent parable of loss and disorientation and a vivid evocation of the horrors of the twentieth century, Blindness has swept the reading public with its powerful portrayal of man's worst appetites and weaknesses--and man's ultimately exhilarating spirit.

About the author:

JOSE SARAMAGO (1922-2010) was the author of many novels, among them Blindness, All the Names, Baltasar and Blimunda, and The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis. In 1998 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
