The featured poets this month are Clifford Hunt and Christine Rodgers.

From Sherri:

I'm pleased to invite you to join Aaron and me as we welcome Half Moon Bay poet Clifford Hunt, and San Francisco poet Christine Rodgers for an evening of their artistry, and hope you will consider joining us. Remember that open mic comes first, at 7:30, followed by the break, and featured poets.

You are invited to read at open mic (3 minutes, please), either your own, or a favorite poets's work, or come simply to revel in the luxury of artful language. If you can, please bring a snack or beverage to share, or supplies for the table (paper plates, napkins, cups); this is such a help in making a truly convivial evening.

About the featured poets:

Clifford Hunt is a husband, father, and writer who lives and works in Half Moon Bay, California. She is grateful to the many Jesuits who have included her as a partner in their ministry. Her poems have been used in a number of retreat centers, and some are still floating around Africa. She has published three books of poetry: Into the Great Green Heart of God, Upon a Luminous Night and Embracing the Sacred Journey. Pacifica Book Club: 'The Emperor of All Maladies' June 15th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, June 15th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our May book, 'The Emperor of All Maladies' by Siddhartha Mukherjee.

About the book:

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and now a documentary from Ken Burns on PBS, The Emperor of All Maladies is a magnificent, profoundly humane "biography" of cancer--from its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic battles in the twentieth century to cure, control, and conquer it to a radical new understanding of its essence.
Physician, researcher, and award-winning science writer, Siddhartha Mukherjee examines cancer with a cellular biologist's precision, a historian's perspective, and a biographer's passion. The result is an astonishingly lucid and eloquent chronicle of a disease humans have lived with--and perished from--for more than five thousand years.
The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance, but also of hubris, paternalism, and misperception. Mukherjee recounts centuries of discoveries, setbacks, victories, and deaths, told through the eyes of his predecessors and peers, training their wits against an infinitely resourceful adversary that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out "war against cancer." The book reads like a literary thriller with cancer as the protagonist.
From the Persian Queen Atossa, whose Greek slave may have cut off her diseased breast, to the nineteenth-century recipients of primitive radiation and chemotherapy to Mukherjee's own leukemia patient, Carla, The Emperor of All Maladies is about the people who have soldiered through fiercely demanding regimens in order to survive--and to increase our understanding of this iconic disease.

About the author:

Siddhartha Mukherjee is a cancer physician and researcher. He is an assistant professor of medicine at Columbia University and a staff cancer physician at the CU/NYU Presbytarian Hospital. A former Rhodes scholar, he graduated from Stanford University, University of Oxford (where he received a PhD studying cancer-causing viruses) and from Harvard Medical School. His laboratory focuses on discovering new cancer drugs using innovative biological methods. Mukherjee trained in cancer medicine at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute of Harvard Medical School and was on the staff at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He has published articles and commentary in such journals as Nature, New England Journal of Medicine, Neuron and the Journal of Clinical Investigation and in publications such as the New York Times and the New Republic. His work was nominated for Best American Science Writing, 2000 (edited by James Gleick). He lives in Boston and New York with his wife, Sarah Sze, an artist, and with his daughter, Leela.

How to Talk With Spirits - book event with author June Ahern, June 11th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author June Ahern as she discusses her book, "How to Talk With Spirits: Séances•Mediums•Ghost Hunts".

***Sunday, June 11th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

"How to Talk With Spirits: Séances•Mediums•Ghost Hunts" is an informative and practical guide to an unusual and often, sensitive subject. In it, questions from the curious living about communicating with the dead are answered. Learn how to conduct a séance, take ghost hunts, and avoid vampire entities. Read about the author's most memorable ghost encounters and hauntings by murder victims.

At nineteen, June Ahern, author, of "How To Talk With Spirits: Séances, Mediums, Ghost Hunts" was in a horrific automobile accident. Thrown through the windshield, she had a near death experience (NDE) that changed her life forever. For quite a few years, she couldn’t talk about what she saw on the 'other side.' Then she learned there were others with similar experiences. A survey in US News & World Report of March 1997 reported 15 million people experienced NDE.

After her NDE was a scary, confusing time. June envisioned events yet to happen. The dead visited her. More than forty years later, she continues to have psychic visions and visits from the dead. While skeptics deny the existence of ghosts and spirit communication claiming there’s no real evidence, polls and surveys show the public strongly disagrees. A 2005 Huffpost poll reported forty-five percent of Americans believed in ghosts or the spirits of the dead and that they can come back in certain places and situations. In a nationwide random survey, 808 adults were asked if they believed in life after death. Seventy-eight percent responded yes. More than one in five Americans said they had seen a ghost themselves, or have felt themselves in the presence of one.

Talking to the dead appears easy for June Ahern, as seen in her paranormal ghost walk videos. “It’s easy as talking to living people”, she says, “but it can be scary too.” By the end of the book you will decide if you want to communicate with the dead or leave well enough alone.

About the author:

June Ahern has published four books. Her book tours across the United States are lively interactions as she engages the audience with candor and humor about her writings and life as a psychic medium. After forty successful as in her profession June continues to share her talents in a documentary series with The Haunted Bay, San Francisco and Beyond Paranormal Investigation as seen on Youtube.com. Her non-fiction's subjects are on parapsychology and the paranormal: "The Timeless Counselor: A Guide to a Successful Psychic Reading", is a consumer’s guide to receiving the greatest benefits from a psychic reading. It was the number one seller by an unknown author at the 1991 New York Whole Life Expo where she was a featured speaker. Ms. Ahern has taught workshops for many years in the Bay Area. Her other non-fiction is "How to Talk With Spirits: Seances, Mediums, Ghost Hunts" addresses an often misunderstood phenomena. Her fiction books are "The Skye in June" and "City of Redemption". June has been a co-host and guest on radio shows and People Are Talking television program. She has been interviewed for newspapers and on-line articles and is featured in several videos. Presently, she is writing a sequel to "The Skye in June" while enjoying life with her husband in Northern California.

May 2017 Poetry at Florey's!

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event!

***Saturday, May 27th, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are Walker Brents, III and Marvin R. Hiemstra.

From Sherri:

It's time for an announcement of this month's poetry reading. I am delighted to say that we will welcome Walker Brents, III and Marvin R. Hiemstra as our featured poets, and I hope you will all consider joining us. It's going to be a unique and memorable evening! Please also bring, if you can, drinks, snacks or supplies (cups, napkins, plates) for the table. You are invited to share your own, or a favorite poet's work at open mic (3 minutes, please).

NOTE: Traffic on the coast has gotten considerably heavier in the last few years. Especially if the weather is good, allow a little extra time to get to Florey's.

About the featured poets:

Walker Brents III is storyteller/artist-in-residence at Berkwood Hedge School in Berkeley. Here he accesses narrative forms of a great many times and places, within each of which a literary germ awaits its revelation as an open secret.
For some fifteen years he has provided a once-a-month series of speech-performances covering various poetic, mythical, and literary subjects at Bird and Beckett Bookstore, as an offering to its Cultural Legacy Project. He also relates stories from the ancient epics at the Asian Art Museum. His book, Mirage Farm, was published in 2005.
As to his poetry, he holds to the subliminal tents of late 20th century symbolist/surrealist/abstract-expressionist styles, in all their idiosyncratic variations, shaped by the blowing winds of modernism in its "pre" and "post" forms. Which is to say his inheritance is free-verse American vernacular poetry, which assimilates back into itself, through each practitioner, all it seems to cast off.
The timeless element comes in with the suggestion of myth, of myth as a presence. What is myth as a presence? A visitation of awareness, awareness of the magnetic core of perception and experience, awareness of the analog which gives each its texture, an awareness expressible as text, as speech or upon the page.
Poetry: a mystery tradition in honor of the engendering alphabet. Were I a laconic cowboy, I might sum all this up in saying: "My poems don't rhyme, ma'am, but some of them do."

Marvin R. Hiemstra was born a noisy Leo in the Year of the Rabbit and delighted the tiny Iowa prairie grass frogs with slam bang versions of Shostakovich’s Preludes before his feet could reach the pedals. Poet, social critic, founding Editor-in-Chief of the Bay Area Poets Seasonal Review, and green man advocate, Marvin, recent work in Caveat Lector, Amsterdam Quarterly, The Satirist, and the North American Review, publishes and appears around the world. “What I hold closest to my heart is Marvin’s reminder of ‘the importance of human affection in this totally terrifying 21st Century!’ ” Shawn Pittard, The Great American Pinup. “Whimsical poet/humorist Hiemstra shares his thoughts and observations on society: a very agreeable addition to contemporary American literature.” Library Journal.

Pacifica Book Club: 'Lamentation' May 23rd at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Tuesday, May 23rd, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our May book, 'Lamentation' by Joe Clifford.

About the book:

In a frigid New Hampshire winter, Jay Porter is trying to eke out a living and maintain some semblance of a relationship with his former girlfriend and their two-year-old son. When he receives an urgent call that Chris, his drug-addicted and chronically drunk brother, is being questioned by the sheriff about his missing junkie business partner, Jay feels obliged to come to his rescue.
After Jay negotiates his brother’s release from the county jail, Chris disappears into the night. As Jay begins to search for him, he is plunged into a cauldron of ugly lies and long-kept secrets that could tear apart his small hometown and threaten the lives of Jay and all those he holds dear.

Powerful forces come into play that will stop at nothing until Chris is dead and the information he harbors is destroyed.

About the author:

From homeless junkie to successful author, Joe Clifford has dedicated his life to education and the craft of writing and helping other ex-junkies find a voice and a platform for their creative energies. He is the author of several acclaimed books, including Lamentation and December Boys in the Jay Porter series. He earned his MFA from Florida International University in 2008, before returning to the Bay Area, where he currently lives with his wife and two sons.

California Jesus - book event with author Mike Marinacci, May 20th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Mike Marinacci as he discusses his book, "California Jesus: A (Slightly) Irreverent Guide to the Golden State's Christian Sects, Evangelists and Latter-Day Prophets".

***Saturday, May 20th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

California, long a Mecca for eccentric cults, has also hosted more than its share of unusual and unorthodox Christian evangelists and sects. From pre-Gold Rush days to the 21st Century, visionaries seeking to revive or transform the Faith have flocked to California’s shores, or have emerged from its environs as native sons and daughters. Their often-idiosyncratic crusades have influenced not only Golden State history and culture, but Christianity as a whole.

California Jesus tells the little-known yet fascinating stories behind the people and groups that populate Californian Christendom, including:

• The Children of God — Born on the Huntington Beach boardwalk, this “Jesus People” hippie-ministry turned to prostituting its members and molesting its children in the name of Christ

• Bebe and C. Thomas Patten — married evangelists, these Oakland-based Pentecostal preachers scammed penniless Okie immigrants and major banks alike for millions

• Joe Jeffers — a renegade Baptist minister who started a murderous religious war between his followers and a rival’s, made headlines in lurid L.A. sex scandals, and claimed that “Yahweh” had stashed several billion dollars for him in the constellation Orion

• The Metropolitan Community Church — Gay L.A. evangelist Troy Perry challenges homophobia with a hugely controversial, and much-attacked sect that ministers Christ’s love to sexual “outsiders”

• Church of the Holy Family — film-star Mel Gibson’s schismatic, secretive Malibu parish, which claims to be literally more Catholic than the Pope

• Holy Mountain — a huge, bizarre, ever-growing folk-art monument in the Imperial Valley desert built by an aging drifter to glorify God’s love, that’s now become an international tourist destination
• And many, many more!

Filled with captivating anecdotes about the state’s most colorful and controversial Christian pastors and sects, and accompanied by many rare photos and illustrations, California Jesus illuminates this absorbing yet little-discussed aspect of both state history and culture, and the Christian experience. Believers and doubters alike, as well as anyone interested in the Golden State’s unique spiritual heritage, will find this work hard to put down.

About the author:

Mike Marinacci is a scholar of religious history, spending over 25 years studying American spiritual groups and leaders, especially the unorthodox sects and figures who have emerged in the Golden State.

April 2017 Poetry at Florey's!

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event!

***Saturday, April 29th, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are Lisa Rizzo and Sherri Rose-Walker.

From Sherri:

I hope you have been celebrating National Poetry Month by writing, reading or reciting poetry at every available opportunity! Please also come to an evening of celebration, and the sweet harmony of poetry. We will be celebrating the sixth(!) anniversary of the Poetry at Florey's series, Poetry Month, and Shakespeare's birthday (the 23rd, it is thought).

Lisa Rizzo (who has a new book of her work), and I will be your featured poets, and we hope you will join us. This is my one perfect chance to read the poem I wrote for Shakespeare, so I will! if you have anything written for or inspired by the Bard of Avon, do bring it to share! You are, of course, welcome to share poetry on any theme at open mic (3 minutes, please), or come simply to revel in the alphabetic labyrinth. Please also bring, if you can, snacks, drinks, or supplies (napkins, plates, utensils) for the table (this help is SO much appreciated).

About the featured poets:

Lisa Rizzo is the author of Always a Blue House (Saddle Road Press, 2016) and the chapbook, In the Poem an Ocean, (Big Table Publishing, 2011). Her work also has appeared in such journals as 13th Moon, Calyx Journal, and Naugatuck River Review. Two of her poems received 1st and 2nd prizes in the 2011 Maggi H. Meyer Poetry Prize competition. She can be reached online at lisarizzopoetry.com.

Lisa spent 23 years teaching middle school English/Language Arts. Now she works as an instructional coach, helping teachers improve their reading and writing instruction. Born in Texas, raised in Chicago, Lisa moved to the Bay Area 36 years ago. Even though she has almost settled down, she still travels as often as she can.
---
Sherri Rose-Walker is a life-long poet who wrote her first poem, a limerick, at the age of seven. Her poetry is principally concerned with deepening the inner life of the Feminine, and seasons of the soul. In this time together you will learn ways to connect with your Animal’s Spirit as well as how to move through the Grieving process.

Bring pictures or objects for the Altar to honor your sweetly departed.
Bring Water to drink during class.

Local Forum: 'Young at Heart', April 27th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our discussion group!

***Thursday, April 27th, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

We will be meeting to discuss the topic: Growing Up & Staying Youthful.

From Nico:

This is a topic I've personally been mulling over in my mind for the past year or so. I'm 24, and the kids I work with think that's ancient! Its funny to me because they have no idea what life has in store for them, and I'm sure 30 year olds look at me and say the same thing, and so on, and so on...

Growing up is tough, but the key to going through it with a sense of grace lies in staying youthful (and no, that does not mean plastic surgery!) The magic wonder of life only loses its magic and wonder when you choose not to believe in it anymore.

This is a discussion that doesn't really require research; more so, a reflection of one's own life.
If you need a place to start, here are some things to consider:

When was the moment I realized that I had to start being an adult?
What things have I found fun throughout my life?
If I didn't know when I was born, what age would I feel in my head?

And if these questions don't help you much, then please--in the privacy of your own home-- I suggest you sip a glass of wine, smile, and think back on those fond memories in your life to this song: Frank Sinatra- Young at Heart

Looking forward to learning with you all!

Pacifica Book Club: 'The Night Trilogy' April 25th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Tuesday, April 25th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our February book, 'The Night Trilogy' by Elie Wiesel.

About the book:

Night is one of the masterpieces of Holocaust literature. First published in 1958, it is the autobiographical account of an adolescent boy and his father in Auschwitz. Elie Wiesel writes of their battle for survival and of his battle with God for a way to understand the wanton cruelty he witnesses each day. In the short novel Dawn (1960), a young man who has survived World War II and settled in Palestine joins a Jewish underground movement and is commanded to execute a British officer who has been taken hostage. In Day (previously titled The Accident, 1961), Wiesel questions the limits of conscience: Can Holocaust survivors forge a new life despite their memories? Wiesel's trilogy offers insights on mankind's attraction to violence and on the temptation of self-destruction.

About the author:

Elie Wiesel (1928-2016) is the author of more than fifty books, including "Night," his harrowing account of his experiences in Nazi concentration camps. The book, first published in 1955, was selected for Oprah's Book Club in 2006, and continues to be an important reminder of man's capacity for inhumanity. Wiesel was Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Boston University, and lived with his family in New York City. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.
