"A Shout-Out for Dyslexics" Book Event with Author Gina Mazzetti, June 22nd at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Gina Mazzetti as she discusses her new book: "A Shout-Out for Dyslexics: The Emotional Side".

About the Book:

Dyslexia has affected many generations of Gina's family. After analyzing the experiences and learning patterns of her grandmother and several other family members, Gina has discovered ways to survive this disability. This book looks at the symptoms, behaviors, and effects of dyslexia and is handy for those experiencing this disability. However, it is also most helpful for anyone who parents, teaches, or is in a relationship with a dyslexic. With this work, Gina hopes to motivate and enlighten readers about this disability. Gina's stories give the reader insight into how dyslexics feel as they face their many challenges and as they struggle to love and accept themselves. The book unpacks the emotional trauma faced by dyslexics and provides suggestions for ways they can achieve and excel in their lives. Gina urges dyslexics to release their negative energy, let go of the limits they once felt, and create a life of fulfillment and success.

About the Author:

Gina Mazzetti was born in San Francisco, California, where she attended Mercy High School San Francisco and graduated as one of the salutatorians of her class. She is now in the process of receiving her bachelor's degree in communication studies at San Francisco State University. Gina has channeled all of her worst dyslexic moments into great triumphs as she is now a motivational speaker and a certified professional life coach. She currently speaks to parents, teachers, and students about her experiences living with dyslexia. She is an advocate for all people who struggle with the disability. She challenges dyslexics as well as nondyslexics to acknowledge their worth, set free the person they have always wanted to become, discover their purpose, and follow through on it. She is passionate about helping others to break the limits that have been placed on them and to stop the cycles of insecurity, victimization, and self-deprecation. Gina is known for her motivational skills, wise soul, outgoing personality, and strong work ethic. She strives to inspire dyslexics to face, manage, and embrace their dyslexia. She aims to make people aware of how dyslexia affects a person's entire life, rather than just his or her academic career. She currently resides in Northern California and continues to speak on dyslexia.

Dennis Willis is an award-winning producer, editor, writer and film critic. About the book:

Chewed Confessions, is a series of thought-provoking linked short stories, using this inventive supposition to share a variety of human experiences, as related by the animated stick of gum that traveled with each person on a given day. From this intimate vantage, these humorous, heartfelt stories together explore a broad spectrum of everyday life, from affairs of the heart to matters of conscience. With rich insight and reflection, this original work of literature reveals the daily struggles we all face with doing the right thing. In this series of nine diverse short stories, each unique gum narrates the thoughts and actions of the characters once it enters his or her mouth. Each gum has its own flavor, and its own insightful understanding of the journey they are taking.

About the author:

Kirwan is a business woman inspired to write Chewed Confessions by a storytelling game she created which follows the travels of discarded gum. Years later, while on a business trip in Manhattan, she noticed an amazing amount of discarded gum on the sidewalks and thought it would be interesting if each one of those pieces of gum could share the adventure they spent with their human host,and — Chewed Confessions was born.

"The Madagascar Pigeon" Book Event with Author John Thom, May 17th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author John Thom as he discusses his new novel "The Madagascar Pigeon".

About the book:

After a dame gives him a cockamamie story about a sea voyage, an East Asian souvenir, and some unwanted attention from a trio of hooligans, a statue of a bird drops in the lap of San Francisco private eye Jaguar Beault, triggering a comic romp. The adventure pits Beault against a cluster of gun-totin, obsessed and creepy villains of both sexes who hound him to turn over the repulsive bird and the hidden jewels and gems that ancient legends lead them to believe it holds. Does this sound familiar? Sure. The Madagascar Pigeon spoofs The Maltese Falcon, the acclaimed Dashiell Hammett-Sam Spade mystery born on the foggy streets of San Francisco. He’s not quite Sam Spade in the clutches of The Falcon, so Jaguar Beault goes to his detecting roots, including pluck and friends, to try to stay alive as he looks down the barrels of a slew of pistols and plots the exposure of a murderer. Along the way, he falls into impossible love with a beautiful lesbian who says Beault’s gay brother is a dreamboat. Beault captions this “the shipwreck of his love life.” San Francisco’s top homicide cop busts Beault’s chops every chance he gets. The odds are stacked against Mr. Beault, but take the points because there could be an upset. Crime capers can be funny even when bullets are flying.

About the author:

John Thom has lived in Pacifica for three years in, as he boasts, the shadows cast by San Francisco’s unmatched vitality; he writes his stuff in pen on lined notebooks; and once he jumped from one side of the Mississippi River to the other side in a display of bold abandon. He is retired from the communications world. With his wife, two daughters and three grandchildren all nearby, he is enjoying the sights, sounds, aromas and funky lifestyle of the Bay Area. He admits he should have relocated to NorCal long ago. His first novel, The Madagascar Pigeon, is a spoof of The Maltese Falcon. Thom is well into creating three more novels in the Jaguar Beault thriller series. His publisher, Bat & Ball Press, brought out his acclaimed 'Champion Batsmen of the 20th Century' back when he was a practicing baseball historian. He and his missus love to travel. They have been in 49 of the 50 U.S. states.

Florey's Books welcomes Ryann Murrin-DeSouza of RMD Designs as she displays and sells her art works!

Ryann Murrin is a local artist and designer that works in a variety of media including ceramics, painting, jewelry, and clothing design. She will have a wide variety of all of her various works on display and for sale during this event.

Ms. Murrin is originally from Ohio, but moved across the country to California. She been engaged in the creative arts since she was able to hold a crayon to paper. She hopes to one day open a school of the arts.

I gleefully announce the second reading of the month at Florey's, in celebration of National Poetry Month, which will be a poetry bonanza! This time, we will have a sneak poet, Priscilla Wathington; the host of the longest running open mic in San Francisco (Sacred Grounds Cafe), Dan Brady; everyone's favorite Celtic harper and poet, Patrice Haan; and me. For obvious reasons, it's going to be a bit longer program than usual, but I hope it will also be an evening of a resonant, many-hued diversity of voice. Please consider bringing a snack or beverage to share, if you can, planning to raise your own voice at open mic, or just come to listen, and help us celebrate language and the spoken word.
