Local Forum: 'How does this sound to you?', Mar. 30th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our discussion group!

***Thursday, March 30th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

We will be meeting to discuss the topic: Music:How does this sound to you?.

From Nico:

How Does This Sound to You? will be a conversation about music and the personal connection we may or may not feel to certain genres. It'll be a fun way to understand music we never though to give the time of day, as well as hear people talk about music we already love.

Questions and Ideas to Consider:

What is your favorite genre of music and why?
Have you played any instruments?
What are you thoughts on dancing versus singing?
How do you feel about music nowadays?
Music moving away from physical copies being sold, and more towards digital sales and streaming.
What makes an artist legendary?

March 2017 Poetry at Florey's!

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event!

***Saturday, March 25th, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are Deborah Fruchey and Cordelia Leoncio.

From Sherri:

By the time we convene for our next evening, it will be "officially" spring, and our thoughts can lightly turn to poetry. I invite you to join Aaron and me as we welcome poets Deborah Fruchey and Cordelia Leoncio, and to share in the kind of convivial and appreciative evening that has come to be the norm at Florey's - thanks to all of you!

Please bring your own, or a favorite poet's work to read at open mic (3 minutes, please). If you are so moved, perhaps you will bring some poems on the theme of spring renewal; it would be lovely to hear them. You are also more than welcome to come just to listen to the feast of language. Please also bring, if you can, a snack or drink to share, or supplies for the table (napkins, cups, plates). Having help with this is so much appreciated.

About the featured poets:

Deborah Fruchey was born. It wasn't her idea. After that she spent too much time in churches, mental hospitals, and 12 Step Groups, in that order. Finally she graduated to poetry readings, where she lurks to this day. She also writes novels once in a while. Her first full-length volume of poetry, Armadillo, was released by Cyborg Press in 2014.
Deborah is a frequent winner in the annual Bay Area Poets’ Dinner contest and the yearly Ina Coolbrith Poetry Awards. Her work has appeared in Snail Mail Review, California Quarterly, Tule Review, Miracle Magazine of India, Song of the San Joaquin, and many others. She was part of the infamous ‘Babarian’ poetry scene of the 1990s, and appears in the resulting anthology, New American Underground Poetry, Poets from Hell, by Trafford Press, as well as several other collections.
Deborah hides out in suburbia, speaking only to writers and musicians, and dreams of a cult following and a flat stomach. She is considered unarmed & mostly harmless.

Cordelia began a poem-a-day writing practice in August of 2014 and is doing her best to keep at it. Her first poetry reading was in April of 2016 at Florey’s Book Company. This will be her second poetry reading.

Gospel of Everyone - book event with author Paul Totah, Mar. 18th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Paul Totah as he discusses his new book, "The Gospel of Everyone - A Poetic Retelling of the Gospel of Luke".

***Saturday, March 18th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

With this poetic retelling of the Gospel of Luke, Paul Totah has provided a new lens with which to view familiar stories, and he
adds new meaning to the story of Jesus. The poems, ones that re-envision gospel stories as intimate news relayed by close friends, bring both humanity and immediacy to the gospels to help readers approach them as if for the first time. Ultimately, this work seeks to give a human face to Jesus along the lines of other artists and writers over the centuries who have worked to lift Christ out of iconic mythology and bring him back to his human origins and restore the power of his stories and journeys.

About the author:

The son of immigrants from Palestine, Paul Totah grew up a Roman Catholic and was educated by Jesuits at St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco, where he serves as director of communications and where he taught English for twenty-five years. He is the author of The San Francisco Fair: Treasure Island 1939–1940(1989) and Spiritus Magis: 150 Years of St. Ignatius College Preparatory (2005). He lives in Pacifica with his wife, Kathryn.

Pacifica Book Club: 'The Intuitionist' Mar.16th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, March 16th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our February book, 'The Intuitionist' by Colson Whitehead.

About the book:

It is a time of calamity in a major metropolitan city's Department of Elevator Inspectors, and Lila Mae Watson, the first black female elevator inspector in the history of the department, is at the center of it.There are two warring factions within the department: the Empiricists, who work by the book and dutifully check for striations on the winch cable and such; and the Intuitionists, who are simply able to enter the elevator cab in question, meditate, and intuit any defects.
Lila Mae is an Intuitionist and, it just so happens, has the highest accuracy rate in the entire department. But when an elevator in a new city building goes into total freefall on Lila Mae's watch, chaos ensues. It's an election year in the Elevator Guild, and the good-old-boy Empiricists would love nothing more than to assign the blame to an Intuitionist. But Lila Mae is never wrong.
The sudden appearance of excerpts from the lost notebooks of Intuitionism's founder, James Fulton, has also caused quite a stir. The notebooks describe Fulton's work on the "black box," a perfect elevator that could reinvent the city as radically as the first passenger elevator did when patented by Elisha Otis in the nineteenth century. When Lila Mae goes underground to investigate the crash, she becomes involved in the search for the portions of the notebooks that are still missing and uncovers a secret that will change her life forever.

About the book:

Colson Whitehead is the National Book Award winning author of The Underground Railroad. His other works include The Noble Hustle, Zone One, Sag Harbor, John Henry Days, Apex Hides the Hurt, and one collection of essays, The Colossus of New York. A Pulitzer Prize finalist and a recipient of MacArthur and Guggenheim fellowships, he lives in New York City.

Raised in the Shadow of the Bomb - book event with author D. Leah Steinberg, Mar. 4th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes author D. Leah Steinberg as she discusses her new book, "Raised in the Shadow of the Bomb".

***Saturday, March 4th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

This story began before I was born, when my father, Ellis P. Steinberg, and uncle Bernard Abraham worked on the secret undertaking that developed the first atomic bombs. These later were dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

It was not only my extended nuclear family that experienced and was affected by growing up at this time in history, but a whole generation of other children raised in the shadow of the bomb who had stories to tell.

The result is this book—part memoir, part discussions with siblings and cousins, and part interviews with a dozen others who had a parent who worked on the Project.

About the author:

Deborah Leah Steinberg is the daughter and niece of scientists that worked at the University of Chicago Metallurgical (Met) Lab a branch of the Manhattan Project during WWII, the secret project that researched and developed the first atomic weapons.

Leah has degrees in Anthropology, and Counseling Psychology with a career in research and clinical Sleep Medicine and counseling. She is a published poet, a nature photographer, and music lover.

She lives in the San Francisco east bay area.

February 2017 Poetry at Florey's!

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event!

***Saturday, February 25th, 7:30-9:30pm***

The featured poets this month are Clara Hsu and Greg Pond and musical accompaniment by David Wong, playing the guqin, a 7-stringed zither. The featured poets will be followed by an open mic period. Open mic sign-up is first come, first served. This event is open to the public and free of charge. You are welcome to bring a snack or beverage to share.

About the featured poets:

Clara Hsu practices the art of multidimensional being: mother, piano teacher, director of Clarion Music Performing Arts Center in San Francisco, traveler, translator, and poet. Henry W Leung wrote in Lantern Reviewon her work: “Hsu…remains faithful to the sense in Chinese while also refreshing our English idiom.” But Clara likes to experiment and transform her translations into unique poetic expressions, stunning in sound and form. She is currently finishing her translations of Lao-Tze’s Tao-te Ching, taking the ancient texts for a wild ride in the twenty-first century.

Gregory Pond was born in Brooklyn, NY to Panamanian parents and moved to San Francisco in the late 1970’s. He’s a single dad and grandfather. Author and publisher of two books of poetry, aftermoon and Blackened Blue, both available on Amazon. He’s read his poetry all over the Bay Area and was featured in the Haight-Ashbury Literary Journal. He is a member of the Revolutionary Poets Brigade, as well as a volunteer reader and facilitator of Poetically Speaking, a conference-call program for seniors featuring classic and contemporary poetry.

Hailing from a long line of Chinese scholars, David Wong is a lifelong student of traditional Chinese arts. He has studied guqin (seven string zither), guzheng (Chinese table harp), pipa (Chinese lute), traditional Chinese painting, and tea culture under masters in the United States and China. His interests also led him to graduate studies both here and abroad, researching and absorbing the depths of his Chinese heritage.

Local Forum: ' Safe Spaces', Feb. 23rd at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our discussion group!

***Thursday, February 23rd, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

We will be meeting to discuss the topic: Safe Spaces.

From Nico:

For those that don't know, a safe space is defined as:

"In educational institutions, safe-space (or safe space), safer-space, and positive space originally were terms used to indicate that a teacher, educational institution or student body does not tolerate anti-LGBT violence, harassment or hate speech, thereby creating a safe place for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students. The term safe space has been extended to refer to a space for individuals who feel marginalized to come together to communicate regarding their experiences with marginalization, typically on a university campus. The idea of safe-spaces has seen criticism on the grounds that it stifles freedom of speech."

I'm sure there will be plenty to talk about, and if not, here are two news stories on the matter to get the ideas flowing:

Pacifica Book Club: 'The Immotrtal Life of Henrietta Lacks' Feb.16th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, February 16th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our February book, 'The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks' by Rebecca Skloot.

About the book:

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more. Henrietta's cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can't afford health insurance. This phenomenal New York Times bestseller tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew.

About the author:

REBECCA SKLOOTis an award-winning science writer whose work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine; O, The Oprah Magazine; Discover;and many others. She is co-editor of The Best American Science Writing 2011 and has worked as a correspondent for NPR's Radiolab and PBS's Nova Science NOW. She was named one of five surprising leaders of 2010 by the Washington Post. Skloot's debut book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, took more than a decade to research and write, and instantly became a New York Times bestseller. It was chosen as a best book of 2010 by more than sixty media outlets, including Entertainment Weekly, People, and the New York Times. Skloot is the founder and president of The Henrietta Lacks Foundation. She has a B.S. in biological sciences and an MFA in creative nonfiction. She has taught creative writing and science journalism at the University of Memphis, the University of Pittsburgh, and New York University. She lives in Chicago.

Karina Whitt and the City of the Gods - book event with author Viktoria Nikola, Feb. 5th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Viktoria Nikola as she discusses her new book, "Karina Whitt and the City of the Gods".

***Sunday, February 5th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

Karina Whitt - an archaeologist by choice, a heroine by chance.

Deciding to give archaeology another shot, Karina travels to an ancient city in Mexico, Teotihuacan, a.k.a. The City of the Gods. Little does she know, Dimitry and Lee, her colleagues from Israel and now agents of Mossad, are waiting for her arrival. Being a language expert, she is one of the only people who can help them solve an archaic mystery involving a bioweapon known as the Sphere of Sacrifice. A bioweapon that is rumored to be buried in Teotihuacan. The same one that Esteban, a local criminal and weapons dealer, has promised to sell to a terrorist organization.

Once again, Karina finds herself plummeting headfirst into the chaos of otherworldly events, prophecies, magical objects, and primordial gods. This time, however, she has the help of a local shaman. A man whose information about the dangerous artifact connects Karina to the historical legacy that set this entire riddle in motion. Should she believe him? His information is far from what Karina wants to hear, but it's what she needs to hear. For the only way she can stop Esteban, destroy the Sphere of Sacrifice, and save countless of lives is if she understands her own destiny and is willing to live it.

About the author:

In 1991 my family and I immigrated to America from Russia. I didn't become fluent in English until I was about eight years old. Even so, I wrote my first poem in English when I was 12 and my first story when I was 13.

My first couple of novels were historical fantasies, which I have yet to publish. After I finished working on them, I started on the Karina Whitt series. So here I am, still writing the Karina Whitt series and brainstorming my next few novels.

Local Forum: ' Isolationism in a Connected World.', Jan. 26th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our discussion group!

***Thursday, January 26th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

We will be meeting to discuss the topic: Isolationism in a Connected World.

From Nico:

There are a lot of talking points for this discussion, it is almost overwhelming. But here are some ideas to consider, as well as a video link to get the thought process started:
-Is there anything to gain by not being on social media?
-Can one use social media and not have it substantially influence their real world?
-How has social media affected human relationships?
-Is isolating oneself from society really that helpful?
Here is a Ted Talk video called Alone Together by Sherry Turkle.
I recommend reading her book as well, but this video covers a lot of good points.

Pacifica Book Club: 'Fates and Furies' Jan.19th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, January 19th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our January book, 'Fates and Furies' by Lauren Groff.

About the book:

Fates and Furiesis a literary masterpiece that defies expectation. A dazzling examination of a marriage, it is also a portrait of creative partnership written by one of the best writers of her generation. Every story has two sides. Every relationship has two perspectives. And sometimes, it turns out, the key to a great marriage is not its trutbut its secrets. At the core of this rich, expansive, layered novel, Lauren Groff presents the story of one such marriage over the course of twenty-four years. At age twenty-two, Lotto and Mathilde are tall, glamorous, madly in love, and destined for greatness. A decade later, their marriage is still the envy of their friends, but with an electric thrill we understand that things are even more complicated and remarkable than they have seemed. With stunning revelations and multiple threads, and in prose that is vibrantly alive and original, Groff delivers a deeply satisfying novel about love, art, creativity, and power that is unlike anything that has come before it. Profound, surprising, propulsive, and emotionally riveting, it stirs both the mind and the heart.

About the author:

Lauren Groff is the New York Times-bestselling author of three novels, The Monsters of Templeton, Arcadia, and Fates and Furies, and the celebrated short-story collection Delicate Edible Birds. Her work has been featured in The New Yorker, Harper's, The Atlantic, and several Best American Short Stories anthologies; has won the Paul Bowles Prize for Fiction, the PEN/O. Henry Award, and the Pushcart Prize; and has been a finalist for the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Orange Award for New Writers, and the L.A. Times Book Prize.

Pacifica Book Club: 'Brooklyn' Dec.15th at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, December 15th, 7:00pm-8:30pm***

Come by for a chat about our December book, 'Brooklyn' by Colm Tóibín.

About the book:

In Ireland in the early 1950s, Eilis Lacey is one of many who cannot find work at home. Thus when a job is offered in America, it is clear to everyone that she must go. Leaving behind her family and country, Eilis heads for unfamiliar Brooklyn, and to a crowded boarding house where the landlady's intense scrutiny and the small jealousies of her fellow residents only deepen her isolation. Slowly, the pain of parting is buried beneath the rhythms of her new life -- and finally, she begins to realize that she has found a sort of happiness. As she falls in love, news comes from home that forces her back to Enniscorthy -- not to the constrictions of her old life, but to new possibilities which conflict deeply with the life she has left behind in Brooklyn.

About the author:

Colm Tóibín is the author of seven novels, including The Master, winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; Brooklyn, winner of the Costa Book Award; The Testament of Mary, and Nora Webster, as well as two story collections. Three times shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, Tóibín lives in Dublin and New York.

Growing up in San Francisco / St. Cecilia Parish - Two-book event with author Frank Dunnigan, Dec. 7th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes author Frank Dunnigan as he discusses his two new books, "Growing Up in San Francisco: More Boomer Memories from Playland to Candlestick Park" and "San Francisco's St. Cecilia Parish: A History"

***Wednesday, December 7th, 7pm***

About the books:

Growing Up in San Francisco:

Newcomers and visitors can still enjoy iconic San Francisco with activities like riding a cable car or taking in the view from Twin Peaks. But San Franciscans cherish memories of a place quite different. They reminisce about seafood dinners at A. Sabella's on Fisherman's Wharf, the enormous Christmas tree in Union Square's City of Paris department store and taking a handful of dimes to Playland-at-the-Beach for arcade games and cotton candy. In his second volume of these unforgettable stories, local author and historian Frank Dunnigan vividly recalls the many details that made life special in the City by the Bay for generations.

St. Cecilia's Parish:

Originally housed in a two-story home and then in an old converted schoolhouse along Taraval Street in 1917, San Francisco s St. Cecilia Church today stands as a cultural pillar and architectural gem of the Parkside District. The parish continually grew to meet the demands of its members, despite the hardships brought on by events like the Great Depression and both world wars. Through years of expansions, new construction and additions, the parish remains an active gathering place for thousands of people. Local author Frank Dunnigan utilizes community remembrances and photos from dozens of different sources to tell the story of a vibrant parish that continues to live up to its motto: The Finest, the Greatest and the Best.

About the author:

Baby boomer Frank Dunnigan has family roots in San Francisco that can be traced all the way back to 1860. A graduate of St. Ignatius College Prep and the University of San Francisco, he spent more than twenty-five years as a bank auditor and a corporate trainer, and is now a recent retiree after a career with the federal government. He has authored two other books on San Francisco history for The History Press, and writes a monthly column, STREETWISE, for the Western Neighborhoods Project.

Coming of age presents a dilemma for Ivey Thornton. She’s a spirited girl with more than her share of strength and intelligence, but no interest in courtship or marriage. Ivey dreams of following in her father’s footsteps, tracking the unknown species of flora and fauna that threaten the world of Aether. Her plans are upended when Arvel Thornton mysteriously arranges her engagement to the reclusive heir of Fenchurche Industries. She boards the airship Monarch with the intention of helping Miles Fenchurche discover a happier future, as long as it doesn’t include her. But something evil has stowed away on Miles’ ship and if Ivey doesn’t learn how to trust him, the greatest adventure of her life might be her last.

About the author:

Cheryl Ammeter is an award-winning scriptwriter who worked for seven seasons on the globally acclaimed children’s program, Barney & Friends. At Radio Disney, she wrote and performed in a wide variety of Disney features. After years of adhering to production budgets and schedules, her larger-than-life imagination has finally been set free in Ivey and the Airship.

This sci-fi fantasy novel is the first in a five book series called Aether’s Edge. Cheryl is currently at work on book two, Masters of Misfortune.

Pacifica Book Club: 'To Kill a Mockingbird' Nov. 3rd at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our book club!

***Thursday, November 3rd, 7:30pm-9:00pm***

Come by for a chat about our November book, 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee.

About the book:

The unforgettable novel of a childhood in a sleepy Southern town and the crisis of conscience that rocked it, To Kill A Mockingbird became both an instant bestseller and a critical success when it was first published in 1960. It went on to win the Pulitzer prize in 1961 and was later made into an Academy Award-winning film, also a classic.

Compassionate, dramatic, and deeply moving, To Kill A Mockingbird takes readers to the roots of human behavior-to innocence and experience, kindness and cruelty, love and hatred, humor and pathos. Now with over 15 million copies in print and translated into forty languages, this regional story by a young Alabama woman claims universal appeal. Harper Lee always considered her book to be a simple love story. Today it is regarded as a masterpiece of American literature.

About the author:

Nelle Harper Lee is known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird, her only major work. In 1999, it was voted "Best Novel of the Century" in a poll by Library Journal. Ms. Lee was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contribution to literature in 2007. Her father was a lawyer who served in the Alabama state legislature from 1926 to 1938. As a child, Lee was a tomboy and enjoyed the friendship of her schoolmate, Truman Capote. After completing To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee accompanied Capote to Holcomb, Kansas, to assist him in researching his bestselling book, In Cold Blood.

'Walking the World 2' Book Event with Author Terrence Kero, Oct.22nd at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes Pacifica author Terrence Kero as he discusses his novel, "Walking the World 2"

***Saturday, October 22nd, 2-4pm***

About the book:

Walking the World 2, Book Two of Terrence Kero’s ground-breaking trilogy about human migration, tells the story of how five ethnic/linguistic hunter-gatherer clans left Africa some eighty thousand years ago and migrated to the western border of Thailand over the course of many millennia. The novel opens in 2011 at the University of California Berkeley, where Hanna Koskinen is an anthropology graduate student planning to write her PhD thesis on early human migration. When she becomes friends with Leewan Somwan, her next-door neighbor from Thailand, she begins to consider making Thailand the focus of her research, and when she falls in love with Leewan’s brother, Chaat, her decision is sealed. Chaat is a brilliant linguist who has developed a theory about the earliest prototypes of the five major Southeast Asian language families, and Hanna thinks she can use his theory, along with human population genetics and age-dated archaeological discoveries, to support the bold argument she wants to make in her thesis: that Thailand was the initial gateway for the first migration of homo sapiens to Southeast Asia. Stories imagining the tragedies and joys of these prehistoric people on their arduous journeys are interspersed with the present-day narrative of the tragedies and joys of the Koskinen and Somwan families, a narrative culminating in dramatic revelations about the early ancestry of the Somwans and the unexpected links that bond humankind.

About the Author:

Terrence Kero is an electronic engineer turned author. Over his career, he has traveled to eighty-eight countries worldwide, and has served as general chairman of four international telecommunications conferences involving participants from more than forty countries in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Since he first went to Thailand more than two decades ago, he has visited fifty of its seventy-seven provinces. He has been a guest lecturer at several universities in Asia, including Beijing University (Speech Recognition Technology) and Thailand’s Thammasat University (Anthropology Department) and Mahidol University (Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia). On the basis of his experiences with people all over Thailand, he has concluded that it is truly the Land of Smiles. He currently lives in Pacifica, a suburb of San Francisco, with his wife, Takoma.
