"City of Redemption" Book Event with Author June Ahern, Sat., Sept. 22nd at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes author June Ahern as she discusses her new novel "City of Redemption"

***Saturday, September, 22nd, 3-5pm***

About the book:

'City of Redemption' is a vividly recounted story of lies, betrayal, sex, drugs, and murder that takes place during an unforgettable time and place in history- the Summer of Love in San Francisco, 1967.

Partly to blame for her young son's death and abandoned by her husband, Liz Mackay leaves Scotland in disgrace, hoping for a second chance at love and life. Arriving in San Francisco during the Summer of Love, she soon joins a commune. Her new family is a curious mix: Black Panthers trying to change the world, a Vietnam vet seeking inner peace, a flamboyant hairdresser with dreams of his own, and a flower child and her drug dealer boyfriend who changes girlfriends often.

At first Liz is happy to have found a welcoming home but soon her hope for peace and love begins to diminish. As her new roommates pry into her mysterious past Liz's search for a "jolly good time" brings more grief and a worsening drug addiction. Embroiled in a plot to bring down the Black Panthers, she looks for a way to redeem herself for her part in her son's death. Sharing her fears, she is told, "Keep your mouth shut." Can she save her friends or will she just watch her commune family break apart? No one expects anything heroic from Liz.

About the author:

Ms. Ahern was born in Glasgow, Scotland and raised in San Francisco. She is the author fo two previous books, the novel "The Skye in June" and a consumer's guide "The Timeless Conselor: The Best Guide to a Psychic Reading". She has a son, and lives on the coast with her husband, dog, cat, and horse.

"Only a Girl" Book Event with Author Lian Gouw, Sat., August 4th!

Florey's Books welcomes author Lian Gouw as she discusses her book "Only a Girl"

***Saturday, August 4th, 2-4pm***

About the book:

In 'Only a Girl', three generations of Chinese women struggle for identity against a political backdrop of the World Depression, World War II, and the Indonesian Revolution.

Nanna, the matriarch of the family, strives to preserve the family’s traditional Chinese values while her children are eager to assimilate into Dutch colonial society.

Carolien, Nanna’s youngest daughter, is fixated with the advantages to be gained through adopting a Western lifestyle. She is proven wrong through her turbulent and ultimately failed marriage and by the consequences of raising her daughter in the Dutch culture.

Jenny’s Western upbringing puts her at a disadvantage in the newly independent Indonesian state where Dutch culture is no longer revered.

The unique ways in which Nanna, Carolien and Jenny face their own challenges reveal the complex tale of Chinese society in Indonesia between 1930 and 1952.

About the author:

Lian Gouw was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, then a Dutch colony known as the Netherlands’ East Indies.

Lian’s short stories and poems have appeared in Quietus Magazine, Writing for our Lives, Voices and Visions, The Highland’s Low Down and Reflections.

Her Predicament, an earlier version of the first chapter of her novel, Only A Girl, was included in the 2006 anthology of the SF Writers Conference, Building Bridges from Writers to Readers.

In her writing, Lian explores themes of human relationships, connection with animals, and fable-like fantasy. She is particularly interested in the lives and struggles of women.

"American Popcorn" Book Event with author Dennis Willis, Sat. July 14th!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Dennis Willis as he discusses his new book "American Popcorn: Hollywood and the War on Common Sense"

***Saturday, July 14th, 2-4:30pm***

About the book:

From all-too revealing trailers and remakes, to over-priced fuzzy 3D movies, is there no end to the condescending ways the big studios will try to sell you their latest blockbusters? American Popcorn is a compilation of scathing, honest commentaries from film critic Dennis Willis on a wide variety of subjects, including the broken MPAA rating system, ill-conceived movie star vanity projects, and how tough it is to be a Star Wars fan. Funny and insightful, you'll never look at movies the same way again!

About the author:

Dennis Willis is an award-winning producer, TV host, director, editor, screenwriter and film critic. He produced and co-hosted Reel Life (later called Film Trip) from 1993-98.
Mr. Willis hosts the Flick Nation radio show, a weekly 1-hour look at the entertainment industry from the inside out. He also hosts the weekly syndicated feature Flick Nation: Home Media Guide, and is the Afternoon News film critic on KGO Radio in San Francisco.
His written reviews have appeared in dozens of magazines and newspapers; and he has conducted hundreds interviews with filmmakers and movie stars. Since 2009, Mr. Willis has published the Flick Nation Movie Guide, a compendium of current reviews.

LitWave Author Event, Sunday, April 29th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Juanita Mercado as she discusses her new book, "Fore! Frogs on the Golf Course".

***Sunday, April 29th 2-4pm***

This is a LitWave Event!

LitWave is Pacifica's 3 day literary festival. April 27, 28, & 29.

See the website for more info!
http://litwave.org/

From the book:

Beginning in 2008, environmental groups demanded that San Francisco close the Sharp Park Golf Course, claiming that course maintenance operations were harming a frog specieslisted as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.

The Golf Club rallied its members to the cause. Juanita Mercado, a club member and a geologist, found herself conflicted between a love for golf and a concern over the game's effect on the environment. Using the analytical skills she had as a trained scientist, she identified a third solution for the Sharp Park situation.

The solution had a track record. For years, it had been in place 10 miles away at the Crystal Springs Golf Course located in Burlingame, California. The facility was withinthe critical habitat of the frog species, and, for more than a decade, a certified wildlife sanctuary.

The story continues to this day. It's eventual outcome could affect existing golf courses.
-----------------------------------
About the author:

Nowadays, Juanita is a voracious reader. As a first-grader, though, her parents were told she couldn’t read. They acted quickly to remedy the situation. Once she learned, she has not stopped. Ever inquisitive of the unknown and especially curious of scientific forces and phenomena happening around her, her love of reading leads her down the path of research and discovery. Through writing, albeit in a lyrical and narrative style, she finds a channel for sharing these discoveries. Volunteering as a golf coach and learning the game herself, she sees the potential value of further channeling these discoveries through golf and the environment of the golf course. Combining all of her passions, and building on her discoveries while writing the FORE! book, she is presently developing The Natural Laboratory program. The program highlights how science is at play on the golf course. Its inaugural site will be Crystal Springs Golf Course whose management is also excited about the concept.

Ultrasound Bone Density Testing, April 7th at Florey's

Florey's welcomes Dr. Ken Howayeck and Sharon Caren as they offer Ultrasound Bone Density Testing at Florey's.

***Saturday, April 7th, 1-3pm***

A fee of $20 per test is requested by Dr. Howayeck.

From Sharon:

Ultrasound Bone Density Testing (UBDT) May Save Your Life

7 of 10 people who have Osteoporosis don’t know it. This problem must be rectified by education and public awareness. Early detection is the key. A simplified scanning process, effective, affordable and available to everyone who wants it, is a great way to start turning around those numbers.

The DXA scan is the most commonly used device to directly assess bone density, which in turn assesses your resistance to fracture. I had my first DXA (Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan in 2004 ordered by my gynecologist and was diagnosed with severe osteopenia (-2.5 T-score). The T-score is a comparison of a patient’s bone material density to that of a healthy thirty-year-old of the same sex and ethnicity.

I retested in 2006 and 2010 with a -2.2 T-score that shows an increase in density of .3 using nutritional supplements and exercise. Yes, it can be done. I’m looking forward to a UBDT test to see where I am in 2012!

To have a DXA scan your doctor must order it, your insurance company must approve it or your budget must allow for it (approximately $250.00). There is also the X-ray factor that, if given the choice, I’d rather choose a procedure more natural. At the time I didn’t know about UBDT testing being used all over the world.

UBDT is quick, comfortable, affordable and available. No doctor visits, no waiting for insurance approval. It requires less training so the cost is a tenth of the DXA, ranging from $20 to $45 typically. This way the scans can be done more frequently to keep track of what’s happening inside bones.

When bone density starts to decline, it can happen and be detected in a short 6 month time period. If we are on the 2 year DXA plan time schedule, this decline is missed and could prove detrimental in certain cases.

I recently met Dr. Ken Howayeck who brought this underutilized form of testing to my attention. He’s a distinguished podiatrist of 22 years. In June 2010 he lost his mother to complications of an Osteoporosis hip fracture. Now his mission is to simply educate the public on preventative ways to combat what could turn into a horrible life-threating disease.

Dr. Ken believes going out and testing everyone he can with the UBDT preventive method will help in his own way to turn the corner on this massive health challenge. Using education and awareness, he explains to the recipient the advantages of the test results. Based on his 22 years of practicing medicine he also will suggest natural methods of strengthening bones. When the body what it needs environmentally and internally, the body can heal. He will also point out when a scan needs immediate medical attention.

'GOal Getter Kids' Folder Games event, Saturday March 24th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local educators Teacher Staci and Teacher Nicole as they present their learning tool "GOal Getter Kids" folder games.

***Saturday March 24th, 2-4pm***

WHAT IS A FOLDER GAME? A hands on, back to basics, all inclusive task designed to help children obtain their educational goals. Within the folder, icons are matched from one side to the other implementing subjects such as math, spelling, sorting, and much more, encouraging the use of fine motor skills and hand eye coordination.

WHAT SETS US APART? We use clear, real life images to help the children make more connections. For convenience and versatility, the folder has a full page veltex fabric side, that can also be used as a teaching board. ALL corners of the icons and the fabric have been rounded off so there are no sharp edges, and to help eliminate peeling. The Velcro is always placed carefully as to not distract from, or obstruct the images. Through our experience there is NOTHING on the market with the durability, and the products that we provide.

*Although designed for children with special needs, typical kids enjoy the folders too.

*Great for teachers wish list and gifts for family and friends.

GOal getter kids is a NEW company created by two Bay Area based educators with over 15 years of experience in the field of autism and other developmental disabilities. We are pleased to introduce this GREAT new product that will be a valuable teaching tool within a classroom or at home.
