"Chasing Serenity" Event with Author A.O. Sullivan, March 4th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author A.O. Sullivan, as she discusses her new book "Chasing Serenity: Journal of My Son's Addiction"

About the book:

Chasing Serenity, an intimate and mystical tale, is personal, relatable, moving, and immensely readable. It is an inspiring and thought-provoking book that approaches addiction and codependence from a perspective that many may not consider.

Author A. O. Sullivan recounts the tale of Maya C., who finds herself on a mythical, allegorical journey of self-discovery and recovery after she picks up her son, Frankie, from jail. If her son is to integrate into the "real" world, she must confront her own demons, and thus learns to use the unseen forces of universe to heal their relationship damaged by years of drug addiction. Determined to bring her son back from his self inflicted hell and understand how she created the "monster", as one therapist put it, she goes deep into the wicked web of her psyche during her walks in the woods.

Chasing Serenity takes you on a suspenseful and mysterious ride oscillating between the drudgery of real life legal battles, deep friendships with the Circle Sisters, and encounters with natural and archetypal personifications like Raven and Darkness who assist her in repairing her own broken heart, mending her fragmented family and confronting the stigma of drug addiction.

About the author:

A.O. Sullivan is an artist, therapist and healing guide. She has 30 years experience helping people realize their true natures through art, mindfulness and deep healing work. She lives with her husband in Pacifica, California where they both delight in exploring the mountain trails and noticing the synchronicities of the natural world.

Florey's Books welcomes local author Jean Mitchell-Lanham, as she discusses her new book "The Lore of the Camino de Santiago: A literary Pilgrimage"

About the book:

People go on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage for a variety of reasons: religious, midlife crisis, a need for adventure or miracle, to visit Hemingway’s 1920s hangouts, to pay homage to Saint James . . . Author Jean Mitchell-Lanham went for all the same reasons, and then her academic and literary interests set her off on a secondary journey to dig deeper into the mysteries and timeless draw of the pilgrimage.

The result is this book: a comprehensive review—complete with academic, regional, cultural, historical, and religious facts—enhanced by one woman’s real-life journey along the popular 500-mile spiritual trek. As a detailed study of a world-renowned pilgrimage site, the book is now an indispensable read before making the pilgrimage.

This book gives account of the legendary tales and literature that existed during the medieval era up to present day on the pilgrim's route to Santiago starting at the foot of the Pyrenees in France. Inclued are tales from the medieval manuscripts of the Psuedo Turpin and the Codex Calixtinus. We travel down a road filled with stories, through towns that marketed them to their advantage. The epic poems, Chanson de Roland and El Cid along with the poetry of Alfonso the Wise are just a few of the medieval gems. We meet the 16th and 17th century picaresque novels and move right along to the beautiful poems of Rosalia de Castro in the 19th century along with her adversary, the novelist, Emilia Bazan. We meet foreign authors too who link themselves to the Camino. It's a literary adventure you don't want to miss.

About the author:

Jean Mitchell-Lanham is a pilgrim currently living near San Francisco. She received her PhD from The Ohio State University in Romance languages and literatures with a concentration in Spanish medieval literature. She has traveled extensively worldwide and lived for extended periods of time in Spain, Mexico and the Republic of Panama. In addition to her love for foreign languages and literature, she holds a Black Belt in martial arts and is a certified assistant scuba instructor. She has dived world-wide including the South Sea Islands and Alaska photographing sea life and assisting marine biologists as a safety diver. She received her PhD from The Ohio State University in Romance languages and literatures with a concentration in Spanish medieval literature. Her other interests include adopting unwanted Dalmatians which she has done for more than 40 years. She is currently raising numbers 16 and 17.

First Meeting of the Pacifica Culture Club at Florey's!

Florey's welcomes you to our new culture discussion club!

Similar to a book club but so many more ways to engage! Instead of just a book assignment, there will be a topic assignment with varying options to choose from to experience. The topics will range from lighthearted, to educational to current events and the 'engagement options' will range from books, movies, events, music, poetry, articles, and more all revolving around the assigned topic. Then at meetings we will discuss the topic and how it translated across the mediums. It is not expected you do all of them!! Just one, unless you want to do more. As well it's encouraged to bring in anything relevant to the topic to share, poems, short videos, songs, articles, etc. See February's assignment for an example!

First Book Assignment! All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

Please have finished reading the book by our first meeting! I've already begun, so far so good! Also, before the meeting I'll be sending out a poll to decide on our next book early so that it'll be available at Florey's if you wish to purchase the next month's book there.

This is the classic book club where all are welcome! Each month a book is chosen, read and discussed at each meeting. It'll be held at Florey's, an independent bookstore in Pacifica. At the first meeting we will decide what types of books and how we'll handle book selection. Each meeting moving forward we'll all decide on a book together, but for the sake of ease I'll make the first book selection.

Drinks and small bites will be available, feel free to bring anything to contribute, I expect the first meeting to go no later than 9pm. My name is Amanda and I will be your discussion leader for the first meeting! Hope to see a good turnout!

“Reading Robert Frost” Discussion with poet Casey FitzSimons, February 14th at Florey's!

Florey’s Book Company welcomes Redwood City poet Casey FitzSimons for the third in a series of discussions of Robert Frost’s poems. Casey is a widely published poet writing in form and free verse. She has a background in visual art, editing, and criticism. Her chapbooks include Against the Familiar Wall (2014) and Standing in the Open House (2013). She has a master’s degree in Fine Arts from San José State University.

From Casey:

“Frost’s can be deeply self-reflective. At the extreme, it’s hard to know what he’s talking about. We’ll try to unravel the “ulterior” meaning (Frost’s own expression) in some of his later, more philosophical works:

Design
For Once, Then, Something
The Most of It
Directive

Some of the topics we’ll touch on are extended metaphor, a poet’s wellspring of inspiration, and allusion to other works.”

Though continuingly astonished by the swift passage of time, it is, indeed, time for the first poetry reading of the new year at Florey's Books! If it's been a while since you've joined us, consider coming to this celebration of language and poetry, and if you've been with us for previous readings, consider helping us welcome in the new, poetic year. Enliven the celebration by bringing a snack or beverage to share. These evenings feature wonderful poetry, light refreshments, convivial company, conversation with like-minded others, an open mic to share your own or your favorite poet's work, and an opportunity to support a brave and staunchly independent book store.

About the featured poets:

KARI ANN FLICKINGER

In her poetry, Kari Flickinger makes use of form and sound to evoke the emotions of her observations on daily life: at times the mundane bits, and sometimes in her unique attempt at grasping toward the infinite. She has been published in The Falcon Scratch, and Susurrus Literary Magazines and won an honorable mention in the first annual Diablo Valley College Literary Contest. Her lyrics and music have been featured in a documentary by journalist Peter Laufer. She works as a tutor living in the Bay Area with her flat-faced black cat, Oscar and her computer-programming fella, Bill. Also, her inexplicable passion for ocean critters compels her to paint pictures of jellyfish, often.

CHRISTINA LLOYD

Born in Hong Kong, raised in the Philippines and educated in the United States, Christina Lloyd holds an MA in Hispanic languages and literatures from U.C. Berkeley, and an MA in creative writing from Lancaster University (U.K.). In addition to publishing two chapbooks, her work appears in various journals, including The North.

About the Book:

From football games at Kezar Stadium to a perfectly broiled Zim burger, San Franciscans have fond memories of the decades after World War II. Dressing up for a movie at the Fox Theatre on Market Street, catching the train at the old S.P. Station on Third and Townsend, taking the streetcar downtown to see magnificent displays in the Emporium's windows or spending a day at Golden Gate Park, the "outside lands" of San Francisco were teeming with youngsters and the young-at-heart alike. Western Neighborhoods Project columnist and San Francisco native Frank Dunnigan offers a charming collection of nostalgic vignettes about the thriving Western communities of unforgettable people and places that defined generations.

About the Author:

Frank Dunnigan was born in San Francisco during the baby boom years of the 1950s to a family that first settled there in 1860. His education began in Kindergarten at Parkside School before moving on to St. Cecilia's and then to St. Ignatius College Prep and the University of San Francisco. He worked as a bank auditor and as a retail training manager before joining the federal government in the 1990s. His monthly history column STREETWISE has been published by the Western Neighborhoods Project ( www.outsidelands.org ) since January 2009, and he has contributed both text and photo content to several local history books published by other authors.

He spent one year studying coaching at Southern Connecticut State University before becoming a pioneer of the lucrative male exotic dancing fad that swept the nation in the early 1980′s. Later he would become the outspoken and controversial “Stripper King of New York.”

"Reading Robert Frost 2" discussion event with poet Casey FitzSimons, November 22nd at Florey’s!

Florey’s Book Company welcomes Redwood City poet Casey FitzSimons for the second in a series of discussions of Robert Frost’s poems. Casey is a widely published poet writing in form and free verse. She has a background in visual art, editing, and criticism. Her chapbooks include Standing in the Open House (2013) and The Breeze Was Mine: Poems in Form (2013). She has a master’s degree in Fine Arts from San José State University.

Ryann Murrin is a local artist and designer that works in a variety of media including ceramics, painting, jewelry, and clothing design. She will have a wide variety of all of her various works on display and for sale during this event.

Ms. Murrin is originally from Ohio, but moved across the country to California. She been engaged in the creative arts since she was able to hold a crayon to paper. She received a Bachelor's degree in ceramics from Kent State University in 2002. She hopes to one day open a school of the arts.

"Emporium Department Store" Book Event with Author Anne Evers Hitz, November 9th at Florey's!

Florey's Books welcomes local author Anne Evers Hitz as she discusses her new book "Emporium Department Store".

About the Book:

The Emporium—“California’s Largest, America’s Grandest Store”—was a major shopping destination on San Francisco’s Market Street for a century, from 1896 to 1996. Shoppers flocked to the mid-price store with its beautiful dome and bandstand. Patrons could find anything at the Emporium, from jewelry to stoves, and it was a meeting place for friends to enjoy tea while listening to the Emporium Orchestra. Founded as the Emporium and Golden Rule Bazaar, the store flourished until the disastrous 1906 earthquake. Once it reopened in 1908, it dominated shopping downtown until mid-century. Many San Franciscans remember with great nostalgia the Christmas Carnival on the roof, complete with slides, a skating rink, and a train. Santa always arrived in grand style with a big parade down Market Street. After World War II, the Emporium, which had merged with H.C. Capwell & Co. in the late 1920s, began its push and opened branch stores throughout the San Francisco Bay area. However, as competition increased, the company’s financial situation worsened, and the Emporium name was no more in 1996.

About the Author:

Author and freelance writer Anne Evers Hitz, a descendant of one of the Emporium’s founders, has gathered together images from libraries and private collections to tell the Emporium story.

October 2014 Poetry at Florey's!

Florey's Books invites you to our ongoing poetry event.

The time has almost arrived for our last poetry reading for this season at Florey's (we resume in January 2015). I want to invite you to join us for what is usually an exceptionally lively and enjoyable evening. Our two featured poets, Terri Glass and Claire Blotter, will share their artistry with us; their styles nicely complement and enhance one another, and will take us to some interesting places. As always, we invite you to read your own poetry, or a favorite poet's, at open mic; you can also come to lend your ear to others. Poetry does not live and breathe without an audience. Bring a snack or beverage to share, if you can; there are rumors that the famous castle cake will be on the table!

There are two unusual elements for this evening. The first is what I detailed for you in the earlier announcement. We will have more than three dozen framed works of art displayed in the store for your perusal. They will be nominally priced, and if you choose to purchase one, your contribution will be added to others, and sent to Bill Burruss, former owner of Know Knew Books in Los Altos. Bill has long been a friend to literature, poetry and all the arts, as well as to Bob and me during the two years we hosted a poetry series at Know Knew. The loss of his store to an unscrupulous business partner meant the loss of his livelihood, and he and his wife have been forced to leave the area. If you don't want to buy a piece of art, you can make a contribution of any size, and will be part of the message that others care about what has happened to him.

One note about the art: these works are not in pristine condition, though some are quite fine. They are pre-loved; some of them, very well indeed! Bob and I have cleaned them up completely so they will put their best faces forward, and we hope you will come a little early to take a look. The collection is a very interesting one, and perhaps you will find something that resonates for you!

As well, I wanted to let you know that copies of my friend, Anne Benvenuti's book, Spirit Unleashed: Reimagining Human-Animal Relations (containing my poem "Wild Healing") will be available for purchase. The book has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and is a timely and thought-provoking work. If you don't know about it, I invite you to take a look.

"What's it Like Being Dyslexic?" Talk with Gina Mazzetti At Florey's!

On Sunday, October 19 at 2-4pm, Author [“A Shout-Out for Dyslexics: The Emotional Side”] & Dyslexic, Gina Mazzetti will be celebrating Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, as she will be answering the question, “What’s it Like Being Dyslexic?”

Many people are under the impression Dyslexi a simply affects a person while they are in school; however, the affects of dyslexia cont1nue beyond academia. Gina will discuss what a dyslexic can potentially experience in school, in the workplace, as well as how the condition can ultimately affect a person’s entire life. Additionally, Gina will present tips on how dyslexics can face, manage, and embrace their learning disability.

It's a true story, told in the words of one who survived shipwreck on the forbidding shores of Siberia in 1881, a previously unknown journal of daily events during the course of Arctic exploration. You'll find discovery of new land, shipwreck on the barren shores of Siberia, life with the native Tchoutkichi (Inuit) people who took in the shipwrecked and destitute sailors for the winter of 1881-1882. They all came very near to starvation. Cahill's account of the burning of the Rodgers is stirring indeed, his tales of life with the native people—a culture shock to both sides of the arrangement—is full of fascinating details of a way of life now long gone.
